Abraham Lincoln began his Gettysburg Address in this way: "Four score and seven years ago." In literature we hear terms like “score” and “fortnight” and “farthing,” but what do these terms mean? Well a score is a set of twenty, so four score means four times twenty which equals eighty, and if you add seven to that the opening line of the Gettysburg address “Four score and seven years ago” means eighty-seven years ago, which at the time of the Gettysburg address represented the foundation date of the United State of America on July 4 th, 1776. Lincoln gave his address on November 19 th, 1863. 1863 minus 1776 equals 87. A forthnight is a period of two weeks and is derived from the 12 th century amalgamation of fourteen nights, hence fortnight, while a farthing is an old English word for a quarter. In this case the farthing was not our quarter of twentyfive pennies, but represented a quarter of a penny. It may be hard to believe but once upon a time a penny had real purchasing power such that there were even farthings coins in circulation in merry old England. As I write this column the citizens of the United Kingdom of England and Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland are voting on whether they will remain as members of the European Union. They are calling this vote “Brexit.” Will Britain vote to leave the European Union? By the time you read this we all will know. If it does happen I expect a mild stock dip. Why are they even considering such a thing? The issues concern freedom, national sovereignty, immigration, economic benefit and risk, as well as national identity. Many of the passionate issues brought on by this vote have resonance with the political moment in our own Country. The Church too is concerned with issues of freedom, especially our first freedom, which is why for the last five years the U.S. Bishops continue to hold a “Fortnight for Freedom” in the two weeks prior to the 4 th of July. The goal of this two week period is to remind citizens of the United States of the importance of the First Amendment of the United States Constitution which reads: Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances. The Fortnight for Freedom also highlights the importance of citizens defending religious freedom. The Fortnight for Freedom is from June 21—the vigil of the Feasts of St. John Fisher and St. Thomas More—to July 4, Independence Day. One such event in our diocese is an opportunity to venerate the relics of St. John Fisher and St. Thomas More at the Cathedral of Saint Paul on Sunday June 26th from 6:30 – 8:00 p.m. The relics of these two saints who exemplified courage and conviction in the face of persecution are coming to the Archdiocese of Saint Paul and Minneapolis. St. Thomas More and St. John Fisher were prominent 16th century Englishmen who stood against King Henry VIII’s efforts to secure for himself supremacy over the Catholic Church in England by denying the legitimate authority of the Pope when the Pope ruled against his desire to have his marriage to Catherine of Aragon, null and void. The two saints accepted martyrdom instead of abandoning their faith. This fearless witness is especially compelling to Catholics in America today, as we face threats to our religious liberty and rights of conscience. In addition to the relics being available for veneration at our Cathedral, the relics will also be traveling to Cloquet, Bemidji, St. Cloud, New Ulm, and Rochester. The tour is being organized by the Minnesota Catholic Conference, and is part of the broader Fortnight for Freedom, a call to fourteen days of prayer, education, and action for religious freedom in the United States and abroad. You can learn more at MnCatholic.org/relics or the Strength of the Saints event page on Facebook. This week I also include an insert on some witnesses on behalf of Religious Freedom. I hope you might consider going to the Cathedral Sunday evening June 26 th so you two can venerate the relics of these two great saints, enter into prayer, and work toward defending the 1 st Amendment of the Constitution of the United States of American as it pertains to our first freedom. FOCUS ON THE MISSION “There are so many things to do.” “We have so little time.” How many variations of these statements have you heard or even said yourself? Actually neither statement is completely true. There are many things to do in this life, but really few things that are vitally important. Working, searching, conniving, and worrying our way to “gratify[ing] the desires of the flesh,” as Paul relates in today’s second reading, are really non-productive. So little time? When we take on the freedom that Christ offers us, we have all the time we need in this world, and even more in the next. Elisha, the prophet Elijah’s chosen servant, was slightly befuddled about what he should do. When Elijah called, he returned to bid farewell to his parents and provide food for his people. Only then did he follow. Jesus demands something different, something more of his disciples. He calls us to a single-minded determination to drop everything and follow him. Now, not later. Parents, Grandparents and Godparents for the Sacred Heart of Jesus Cenacle As parents, grandparents, and godparents, we believe that praying for our children, grandchildren and godchildren, is one of the best ways we can impact their lives. So whether your child is young or young at heart, we will ask God to guide them in the ways of faith, that he will bless their health, and guide their way of life. Our group trusts in God and we acknowledge Him as being present in our lives and in the lives of our children. Our hope is that our prayers will help all children, that we love and care about, to see how God is present in their lives. Please join us for Mass on Saturday July 2 at 8:00am, followed by a Rosary at the Altar of Our Lady. Religious Education Vacation Bible School “The Vatican Express” will be offered at Sacred Heart for children age 4 through Grade 4 (grade just completed in school) Monday August 8 through Thursday August 11 from 9 –11:30am. Peter and Paul Thursday: The First Holy Martyrs of the Holy Roman Church Friday: Blessed Junípero Serra; Canada Day; First Friday Saturday: First Saturday Jubilee Year of Mercy June 26, 2016 Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Yet again in Ordinary Time, Jesus seems to demand extraordinary commitment. A would-be disciple enthusiastically volunteers to follow Jesus “wherever” (Luke 9:57). Jesus replies that “wherever” means “nowhere to rest his head” (9:58). To other candidates, Jesus brusquely denies reasonable requests to fulfill family obligations (9:59, 61), declaring that discipleship demands total commitment—now! But Jesus also demands that we not judge how others respond. When James and John volunteered to “call down fire from heaven” (9:54) to destroy an unwelcoming town, Jesus “turned and rebuked them” (9:55). All violence of any kind is completely unacceptable among Jesus’ disciples, a lesson this Jubilee Year of Mercy is teaching the Christian community once again. Paul’s challenge to the Galatians and us reinforces Jesus’ decisive command to James and John that they express their commitment to him through compassion for others. We must abandon the violence of “biting and devouring one another” (Galatians 5:15), choosing instead to “serve one another through love” (5:13). —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.
