Enrichment and Reforestation
• The Enrichment and Reforestation Program for April to June 2015 was focused on
monitoring of the planted seedlings and the maintain of seedlings in the nursery. The
nursery inventory in ASMR as at the end of June 2015 is more than 30,000 seedlings of
various indigenous plants.
• Location for the enrichment and reforestation has been discussed with TNTP (Tanjung
Puting National Park), and it will be in and around conservation area of ASMR and
TNTP.
• ASMR collaborated with with a High School in Pangkalan Bum on a “Greening and
Planting Project” around ASMR and TNTP as part of creating awareness on Earth
Global Day. ASMR donated the seedlings and covered for cost of food and other
expenses for this project with approximate cost of IDR50million
• We have expanded the scope of our indigenous plant nursery to also make our
seedlings available to any external parties who wants to green their environment.

Enrichment and Reforestation –
Greening and Replanting
• Pangkalan Bun High School collaborated with
TNTP, OFI (Orangutan Foundation Indonesia)
and YAYORIN (Yayasan Orangutan Indonesia),
and supported by ASMR, conducted a
conservation program to commemorate the
EARTH GLOBAL DAY in TNTP area & around
ASMR
• There were about 500 seedlings planted by
the Pangkalan Bun High School ; seedlings
coming from the ASMR nursery.
• We will continue to support this type of
collaboration in TNTP and ASMR
conservation area

Enrichment and Reforestation –
Greening and Replanting
• As part of the project there is a Wildlife and
Conservation Awareness session on the
second day of the trip to TNTP for the High
School students of Pangkalan Bun
• The program aimed at sharing and learning
about orangutan and the importance of
having orangutan and other wildlife around
us

Using the SMART tools, the Satgas team continued the monitoring and
patrolling of the ASMR concession.
The patrol covered both inside and outside of the ASMR concession.
The Satgas team used SMART (Spatial Monitoring And Reporting Tool) method
to collect data from the field.
The team did not saw any orangutan activities around the monitoring area, but
they have found on several occasion another animals biodiversity like birds,
long tail monkeys and so on
The team also found illegal logging activities which was also reported in the last
report.
Slide 8

HCV & Orangutan Monitoring
The Satgas team found wildlife as per
photo above as well as potential illegal
logging activities as shown by the next 2
photos. However the team could not
locate the persons involved in this activity
and therefore could not establish contact
to have a discussion with them.

Biodiversity Survey
• ASMR conducted a biodiversity survey from 27 April to 1 May in the
Bedaun (minority) and Sekonyer (majority) area (462 ha) to assess the
biodiversity condition, classify and collect the composition and types of
animals and plants; as part of HCS approach; to understand the biodiversity
of the area; build the data base for conservation programmes later and to
improve the capacity and knowledge of ASMR staff on biodiversity matters.
• The survey team composed of 4 experts (primate, flora, wildlife, mammals)
from Yayasan Pendidikan Koservasi & Lingkungan and Yayasan Gunung
Palung as well as some sustainability staff from Jakarta and from ASMR
• The survey started with a meeting and fact finding with communities from
Sekonyer and Bedaun village.

Findings From The Survey

•
Form 2 teams, fauna and flora with the survey
conducted for 3 location with 4 transaction as shown
in the map on the next page of the report.
This area is low lying, with rawa or swamp ecosystem
dominating this area.
The 462 ha is dominated by old shrubs, formerly
cleared from logging activities, agricultural and other
human activities. , as shown from the domination of
Macaranga spp. and bushes (perdu, laiana, from
Uncaria sp.)
The biodiversity of this area continues to be threaten
as during the survey, the team found 4 active spots of
unauthorised logging with sound of chainsaw clearly
heard. This is also supported by the Satgas team’s
report

Numerous canals built by the regional government
and the company at the north of our concession
also contributed to the degradation of this area.
No plant with CR status (Critically Endangered);
found 2 species with EN status
Area dominated by Macaranga spp., a type of
mahang and bushes (perdu, laiana, from Uncaria
sp.)
The area is less capable of supporting rich
population and diversity of wildlife, e.g. orangutan
(Pongo pygmaeus pygmaeus), because the area is
limited and under constant threat from human
activities
Detacted strong pressure from the villagers to
convert this area into plasma planting as this area
had already been surrendered by the villagers to
the company for plasma prior to HCS assessment.

Survey Routes & Findings
Dominated by Mahang
(Macaranga spp), signifying
that the area had been
opened and cleared
continuously from logging
and human activities
The survey found 1 out of 21
birds species sound identified
in this 3 survey areas
7/10/2015
8 orangutan nests, mostly
30-40 days old found in this
surveyed area but no sight
of orangutan itself. Found
only 1 family of long tail
monkey (macaca
fascicularis) and droppings
of musang.
13
Survey Routes & Findings
Identified shrub areas formerly cleared
for logging activities, agricultural and
other human activities; areas either
dominated by shrubs or Macaranga
Marked area of unauthorised active
and non active logging activities .
Need to consider if program in LSM can
work here as scale of logging is more
intensive here.
The location of a few trees of the
CR status plants in survey area.
ASMR buffer zone is more than 500 m from
concession to Sekonyer river and Tanjung
Puting National Park

Socialisation With The Community
The socialisation and disseminated on 16 June 2015 of the following information to the community of Sekonyer and
Bedaun, the camat and some NGOs:
a) HCS commitment of the group and the company and the potential HCS areas of ASMR
b) The method and findings of the biodiversity survey conducted under the leadership of Pak Edy Hendras
c) Feedback from the villagers on the specific area of 462 ha. - The local community is supportive of the report
and ASMR conservation program but requested company to consider not to put conservation areas too near to
the desa and area already degraded; better to convert area for plasma planting.
