St.Vincent’s Riverside CCU Receives
Beacon for Excellence Award
The CCU at St. Vincent’s Riverside (SVR)
has received the prestigious Beacon Award
for Excellence from Advance for Nurses. The
critical care unit was recognized for all it does
to ensure patient safety, employee engagement
and high-quality care.
beyond for their patients. Clinically, the CCU
has been a standout amongst all Ascension
Health ministries. In 2004, the unit was asked
to develop a program to reduce pressure ulcers called SKIN (Surface selection, Keep them
turning, Incontinence and Nutrition).
“Since then, our SKIN program has been
spread to all our Ascension facilities and now
throughout Kaiser Permanente,” said Kleinhelter. “Pressure ulcers are just a piece of what
we do really well.”
SVR Critical Care associates (L-R) Sondra Bessett,
Shawtrell James, Rene Baldwin, Cheryl Bradwell,
Alma Bajagilovic, Sara Dean, Beverly Cruz and
Catherine Hildago, proudly display their Beacon
Award for Excellence.
Since 2003, the Beacon Award has recognized
outstanding critical care units that meet or exceed stringent quality standards. In that time,
only 383 out of more than 6,000 critical care
units across the U.S. have been recognized.
In Florida, only 31 units in 15 hospitals have
been honored.
“We got rejected the first time,” admits Pam
Kleinhelter, MSN, RN, NE-BC, nurse manager, ICU and dialysis at SVR. Since then, the
unit at SVR has gone on to earn two Beacon
Awards for Excellence.
St. Vincent’s newest ad campaign, features
several stories of CCU nurses going above and
“It is pride,” adds Kleinhelter. “It’s just that
pride of nursing, that they give good care and
have good quality outcomes. And the fact that
we’ve won it twice — it’s quite impressive.”

Persistence pays! St. Vincent’s Mobile
Health Outreach Ministry received
word in January that the National
Health Service Corps (NHSC) approved its application to become part
of their program. Jimmy Malaver,
M.D. and Manager Stella Mouzon
worked for over a year to achieve this
status.
The NHSC is a network of more than
9,000 primary healthcare professionals
that provide medical, dental, and mental and behavioral health services in
communities, known as Health Profes-
sional Shortage Areas (HPSAs),
across the country that have
limited access to healthcare.
In exchange for their service,
the NHSC provides clinicians
with financial support. In this
instance, the MHOM benefits

ber sites.
The ministry was originally turned
down by the program because it does
not charge sliding scale fees. Dr. Malaver and Mouzon invited the regional
operations representative to visit and
learn more about the ministry. The
volume of work and the fact that a
sliding fee is not charged because there
is NO charge for the services made
quite an impression. Mobile Health
was judged fit for the National Health
Service Corps’ criteria by providing
primary care in medically underserved
areas regardless of a patient’s ability to
pay.

Sleep Disorders Center
Earns Accreditation
The Sleep Disorders Center at
St. Vincent’s Southside received fiveyear accreditation in January from the
American Academy of Sleep Medicine
(AASM) for meeting or exceeding
all AASM standards for professional
healthcare.
“The accreditation signifies our commitment to providing excellent care to
our patients,” said Dr. Rahul Kakkar,
former Medical Director.
SVS President Donnie Romine extended his congratulations to Bob Cook
and his staff for a very successful accreditation inspection. “A process that
normally lasts between four and six
hours was completed
in approximately one
and a half hours.”
The inspector made

SVHC Pharmacists Earn Advanced Certification

Pharmacy Services
The Department of Pharmacy Services
is proud to recognize and congratulate
several associates who recently earned
Board Certified Pharmacotherapy
Specialist Certifications (BCPS). The
obtainment of advanced qualifications
after the completion of formal training
is challenging and is a sign of professional commitment. Being recognized
as a board certified pharmacotherapy
specialist is a prestigious honor, as fewer
than 2.5 percent of all pharmacists in
the United States receive the recognition.
Drs. Kevin Epps, Quovadis Epps,
Dottie Miller, Calvin Tucker and Megan
Womack are to be congratulated for
their achievement.
Forty-seven percent of St. Vincent’s
Riverside pharmacists are now board
certified. Sixty percent of St. Vincent’s
Southside pharmacists are board
certified.
The Department of Pharmacy Services
is committed to enhancing the care provided to our patients in order to ensure
optimal pharmaceutical care.

The magazine’s February issue recognized that our associates are guided
by our core values: service, reverence,
integrity, wisdom, creativity and dedication. Being committed to the mission of
sustaining and improving the health of
individuals and our community is evi-
denced through programs like our Food
Pantry. Last year we provided nearly
1,500 local families (2,521 adults and
1,246 children) a three-day care package
of food from our Food Pantry. In addition, more than 125 grocery store gift
cards were distributed to needy families
during the Christmas season.
Associates Receive
Special Recognition Coins
St. Vincent’s CEO Moody Chisholm
and former St. Vincent’s Southside
President Donnie Romine have proudly
presented special recognition coins to
six associates. The front of the coin
bears the message “Above. Beyond.
Because.” and the back states that the
coin is “given in honor of exemplary
service.” Chisholm presented the first
coin to Marketing & Communications
Director Kelly Brockmeier for her work
on our new branding campaign. The
campaign
includes TV,
radio and
print ads as
well as billboards and
features the
true stories
of associates
who live out
our Mission
through extraordinary actions.
Mayya Villamor, RN, SVR CCU,
received the second recognition coin
from Chisholm. Villamor brightened
the spirits of a patient who spent his
50th birthday in the
CCU. After
her shift,
she bought
a cake, had
it decorated
and brought
it back to
the CCU for
the entire
staff to present to the patient.
Tiffany Smith, ACP, SVR 2 Center, was
the third person to receive the special
coin from Chisholm in response to
an email he received from a patient’s
wife. It read in part: “The care in the
room was good, but one young lady
went above and beyond for my husband. I am sure it is her job but she
really cared.
I hope she
is planning
on becoming a nurse
because she
has the compassion that
is needed.”
Romine presented a coin to Josephine
White, who has worked in Dietary Services at St. Vincent’s Southside for the
past 40 years. “I love being here and
have no plans to retire,” White says.
It’s interesting to note that her son
Marvin serves as the Chief Financial
Officer at
Ascension’s
St. Vincent
Health in
Indianapolis.
“Ms. White
is a wonderful asset
not only to
food service
but to the
entire hospital,” says Patient Services
Manager Dana Gardner. “She lives by
the words of Christ, to ‘let your light
shine before others, so that they may
see your good works and give glory to
your Father who is in heaven.’”
Moody
Chisholm
presented
a special
recognition
coin to Iris
Dandoy,
RN, 4E
ICU, in
response to
a patient’s
letter praising Dandoy’s unique touch.
In her own words, the patient expresses
her gratitude to Dandoy and God. “For
the rest of my life, every time I think
about it, it will bring me to tears because it was like being cradled in Jesus’
arms. I believe Jesus was there and that
a real Angel works through Iris. And it
was because Iris allowed the Angel to
work through her that I made it.” She
adds, “It was so much more than going
Above and Beyond. She is above excellent and I know that she was praying
for me. I want to thank St. Vincent’s for
hiring Iris and bringing her in for those
few hours and into my heart, where she
will remain.”

Alicia’s Act of Kindness
An ICU nurse at St. Vincent’s Riverside is going above and
beyond for her breast cancer patients. Alicia Dollison, RN,
started making pillows for women who underwent the DIEP
flap procedure (Deep Inferior Epigastric Perforator) following a mastectomy. The procedure reconstructs what breast
cancer takes away. These patients are closely monitored
for 48 hours after the procedure to ensure the surgical site
receives adequate blood flow. Dollison was moved by their
bravery and decided to take action.
“They are always so nice and calmly deal with each and
every interruption. I haven’t met one yet with a negative
attitude,” said Dollison. “I just wanted to do something for
them.”
Dollison buys all of the supplies and her mother sews each
pillow, complete with Velcro closure for easy washing. Each
patient is given a pillow with a special note before discharge.
“As a breast cancer survivor I know how a simple act or
word of encouragement can make a difference in how a
mastectomy patient
feels about herself.
Dollison is bright,
respected by her
peers, a leader and
a real patient advocate. She is the nurse
you would want to
take care of you,”
says Sharron Taylor,
Dollison’s Assistant
Nurse Manager.

His dedication and love of the
ministry has been recognized by
his church, New Covenant Ministry. On June 10, New Covenant ordained Hall as an Elder
of their church. In addition to
all of his other mission work, he
now adds Assistant Pastor to his
long and loving list of responsibilities.
If that weren’t enough… he also aids
his wife Geneaver in her 12 year ministry as Pastor of a Children’s Church.
Hall says thoughtfully, “St. Vincent’s
keeps me in a state of compassion and
prayer!” He encourages his shuttle
riders to look at their jobs as a ministry. “By showing God’s compassion to
everyone, we have the opportunity to
lovingly touch the lives of those who
might not have much joy or hope.”
Hall shares that just a few days before
his ordination, he invited CEO Moody
Chisholm to attend, really thinking he
would not have the time. “Can you
imagine the joy I felt when I looked out
and saw him in the congregation?” He
adds, “It is so good to see his heart and
know that he cares for us!”
Thank you, Samuel Hall, for letting
God’s love shine through you in our
community, at St. Vincent’s and now as
an Elder in your church!

When ABM (American

St. Vincent’s Facilities
Services, it brought one
of its fun traditions to the
SVR campus. “Mr. Goodbar” is a peer recognition
program that recognizes
shop level craftsmen and
technicians. Candidates
are selected for going

player. Nestled among
the gift card and other
goodies in their gift bag,
recipients find a good old
fashioned Mr. Goodbar!
Ernest Lockwood, who
serves as a plumber in
the HVAC/Plumbing
shop, was the first to be
recognized as Mr. Goodbar this past March. He
has worked at SVR since
1979!
Lockwood passed the
Mr. Goodbar title to
Mike Turner in April.
“Mike has been with
St. Vincent’s since 1997
and is one of the best
ambassadors,” says
Dave Nason, Director of
Facilities Services. “He’s
always ready to pick up
any job or customer care
issue while helping other
team members. He richly
deserves the recognition.”
In addition to being
named Mr. Goodbar
during the department’s
March meeting, Turner
was promoted to Facilities Technician Manager
the same day.
Join us in congratulating
Ernest Lockwood and
Mike Turner for their
outstanding service to

She asked her own

then emailed all of the

league’s teams to
participate. In the end, she collected 10 boxes of new
and used books. She donated them to a Duval County
Health Dept. clinic at the beach.
Dr. Schare, a pediatrician with the clinic, has participated in the nationwide “Reach Out and Read”
program for more than a decade, providing one new
book to children at each of their well check-ups from
six months through five years. Noticing that children
were looking for a book EVERY time they were at
her office, Dr. Schare started collecting used books
from friends, colleagues and the community. “In many
of our patients’ homes, books are an unaffordable
luxury and many of our parents are illiterate,” said Dr.
Schare.
In a letter to Denkler, Dr. Schare gave thanks for her
efforts. “Your generous collection of donated books is
a gift that we treasure for our patients and their families. The ability to offer an educational ‘treat’ to our
underprivileged children is a pleasure for them and for
us!” The letter goes on to read: “Through the efforts
of people like Silvia Denkler and her soccer players, we
are able to provide exposure to books and increase the
probability of literacy for all of our family members,”
says Dr. Schare. “We enjoy getting to see the unforgettable smiles of gratitude on their faces!”

We are excited to share new
stories of our Service Excellence
Legends. These are associates within
our Ministry who demonstrate

Jeanette Wienecke, Cancer
Data Analyst. In January, you
showed Service of the Poor and
Dedication by offering to assist an
uninsured, anxious patient who only
spoke Spanish. You went the extra
mile by not just calling the patient but
also showing up at her appointment for
her mammogram where you assisted
another Hispanic patient in the waiting
area. Your co-worker expressed that
you are truly a blessing!
Cherie Mooney, Executive
Secretary, St. Catherine
Labouré Manor. There was a long
term resident whose wife had recently
died and he wanted to send flowers to
her grave site in honor of her birthday--- but no one knew where she was
buried. You researched and used your
great computer skills to track down his
wife’s obituary. From there you found
out the undertaker’s name. Then it was
a matter of minutes before the correct
graveyard was found, and the resident’s
request to honor his wife was completed.

Dear Pat,
“A few weeks ago, you received a call
from Shands Jacksonville regarding one

Brenda Wallis, RN, SVR 5
East/5100, made a lasting impression
on Lucy K., an ER Unit Clerk and Associate Care Person, as they cared for a
patient together. “I was very impressed
with the way Brenda treated this man.
When he got confused and scared,
Brenda did not hesitate to hug him and
