Jacob Werth Marriage Register, 1858

Jacob Werth Marriage Register, 1858-1859
transcribed by Brooke Skelton
Within the Archives of the Eastern Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in
Canada is an untitled marriage register covering Wellesley, Wilmot and Woolwich
Townships. It has been ascribed to Jacob Werth1 and lists details of marriages performed
in 1858 and 1859. In her book Waterloo County churches, Rosemary Ambrose indicates
for the time periods of this register that “Rev.Werth returned to Conestogo from 18571860” as pastor at St.Matthew’s Lutheran Church2 and was also at St. James Evangelical
Lutheran Church in Elmira from 1852-18593. Werth was said to have been an early
pastor at St. Peter’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Heidelberg, during the 1850’s 4, and
his time there may have been covered by this register as well.
The contents of the register had been largely transcribed into the Waterloo
County marriage registers as Return 95 (1858 marriages) and Return 466 (1859 marriages)
made by Jacob Werth, Lutheran Minister. Ministers copied their entries and sent them to
the County clerk who would then enter them into the register. As Brenda Dougall
Merriman states in her work “… all these registers were copies created by clerks; their
rendition of spellings or place names from a minister’s returns can be erratic”7. Those
viewing the transcriptions in the very useful set of published County marriage registers
of Ontario, Canada, 1858-18698 and working their way back to the microfilm of the
registers created by the County clerks are still two transcriptions away from the
minister’s original register.
Upon examination of the original Werth register, it appeared that entries were
missing in the previous transcriptions and some of the entries could be transcribed
differently. Umlauts are missing and some letters, read differently (like the old German
double “s”), could bring a whole new light to names and places. Further, some names in
the former transcriptions were in full and others had initials in place of first names. The
original register, here transcribed in the order in which it is recorded, did not use initials
in place of names. It proves once again that one should regard the information in a
transcription (even this one!) as a lead or clue, as opposed to fact, and always examine
the original if possible. The original register of this transcription can be viewed in the
Archives at Wilfrid Laurier University Library in Waterloo, Ontario.
