Let loose. Walk barefoot in the grass. Sit and stare at the clouds. Go to outdoor concerts. Wear shorts. Read under (or in) a tree. Picnic for no reason. Build Habitat for Humanity houses or Plant-A-Row for the Hungry. Put those heavy coats and sweaters away for a few months. Be free of those cold weather boundaries. But can we escape them completely? Our Renewal time moves into our next focus - “Boundaries.” So we ask, “What do healthy boundaries mean when we claim, ‘Come as you are. You belong!’?” Does that mean we can do as we like? Does it mean we can’t be who we are? Do we need to get rid of some things or be free of some things to practice healthy boundaries? Must we really accept everyone who comes through the church doors? And are there hidden boundaries to which we’ve become blind, but that our visitors would soon see – or even bump up against? Come to worship and join in the exploration of Boundaries. And check out the hallway on the first floor close to the Coffee House to see our thoughts on our first focus, “Belonging.” There are some truly thoughtprovoking ideas there, and your wise words may help shape FCC’s future. Looking ahead: The church is certainly alive! Food at First is serving up deliciousness and relationship. Worship is vibrant. The Renewal activities learning tracks (Le Chambon, Daring Greatly and the Labyrinth) are in full swing, but it’s not too late to join in the latter two. More activities are coming: Living Buddha, Living Christ will be held on June 25 and the Church Family Picnic will make a splash on June 10 at Emma McCarthy Lee Park, at noon. And what is summer without worship with our dear friends of Ames UCC for the first four Sundays of July and Worship in the Park on July 30 with Ames UCC and First Baptist. Come as you are. These will be offered at different times during the Congregational Renewal to allow participation in one or more as these might fit our varying schedules. —Janet Lott Living Buddha, Living Christ – Final Renewal Learning Track Opportunity Sunday, June 25th, at 2 pm, Coffee House To order a book, please contact Deb Lewis by May 28 “Touching the present moment, we realize that the present is made of the past and is creating the future.” —Thich Nhat Hanh, Living Buddha, Living Christ The last Renewal Learning Track will be to read and discuss Living Buddha, Living Christ, by Thich Nhat Hanh. The one-session discussion will be on June 25th at 2 pm in the Coffee House, and will be led by Deb Lewis, Renewal Chaplain, and Janet Lott, Renewal Minister of Worship and Music. Thich Nhat Hanh is a Vietnamese Buddhist monk and peace activist. He is the founder of the Buddhist meditation and retreat center of Plum Village, in France. You probably recall that Plum Village is where Pastor Mary Jane began her Renewal. Living Buddha, Living Christ provides a wonderful study opportunity during our Renewal theme of “Balance”, as Thich Nhat Hanh shares his views of Christianity, spirituality, peace, interfaith understanding and more through the eyes of a Buddhist monk. 3 The Labyrinth: A Spiritual Journey During Mary Jane’s renewal time the labyrinth will be setup in the Great Room on the 2nd floor. There will be open times before Jim Gaunt’s book study and before Deb Lewis and Amy Keuhl’s book study. Someone will be stationed at the labyrinth during the open times for assistance or guidance if needed. The second group time at the labyrinth will be on Friday, May 26 from 6-8 pm. Mary Jane will be walking the Chartres Labyrinth on May 26, so we will be walking it with her (even though it will be hours apart). Here is the schedule through May: Tuesdays (through May 23) from 6-7 pm – Individual time to walk as desired Sundays (through June 11) from 2-3 pm – Individual time to walk as desired Friday (May 26) from 6-8 pm – Special walk with Mary Jane The Renewal Team hopes that you will come and experience the spiritual discipline of walking a labyrinth. It can change your life. There are other on-going spiritual disciplines at First Christian Church. The first one is Wednesday Prayers at 12:15 pm in the Coffee House. These are intercessory prayers. Deb Lewis is the contact. The second one is called Listening to God on Thursdays at 6:00 pm in the Chapel (2nd floor). Listening to God is the Christian form of meditation called Centering Prayer. Thursdays at 7:00 p.m. Meets in the Coffee House at First Christian Church 611 Clark Ave. 515.232.5766, [email protected] 7 It came to me as a surprise when I learned that we have 10 ministers (ordained and commissioned) in our congregation at FCC. As a church we are truly blessed to have these wonderful Christians among us. We are also blessed that our minister, Mary Jane was chosen to participate in the Clergy and Congregational Renewal Program. We will be introducing these ministers, who will be preaching during Mary Jane’s and Tim's absence, in our Featured Members section of The Call. In this issue we feature Don and Heather Withers. — Bob Watson D on Withers was born in Detroit and grew up in Winchester, a suburb of Boston. His time there included a senior class trip to Washington, being student manager when Winchester High School won the New England Cross Country trophy, and seeing Hurricanes Carol and Edna. And three-foot snowfalls! After Don graduated from high school, his family moved to a suburb of Dallas, Texas, and Don headed to the University of Michigan. the new curriculum as the staff eagerly awaited each lesson completion. I received a nice letter from Admiral Stansfield Turner, the Commandant, who later became head of the CIA.” His Air Force career took him inside Cheyenne Mountain, Colorado, (NORAD Combat Operation Center); Sondrestrom Air Base in Greenland and on the Greenland Icecap; and Tehran, Iran, where he commanded a solar flare patrol unit. He was also introduced to President Johnson, Prince Philip, and Princess Elizabeth of Denmark. “I flunked out of Michigan in my senior year, 1961,” he said. “I really was not meant to be a chemical engineer, but it took four years and an academic kick in the pants to realize that. This apparent failure led to my first grand adventure.” After retiring from the Air Force, Don moved to Lincoln, Nebraska, and started another grand adventure that began with meeting Heather Withers. “She was eating alone in a small coffee house, and I introduced myself. She still remembers that conversation,” Don said. Once Don was no longer a student, his draft exemption ended. He was greeted by Uncle Sam, and in 1962, Don chose the Air Force. This started his 20-year career, including four years enlisted time and 16 years as a weather forecaster and solar/ionospheric scientist (solar flares impacting the earth’s ionosphere). He happened to be in the right place to log over 100 hours of backseat jet trainer time. Along the way, Don earned a BS and MS in meteorology and graduated by correspondence from Naval War College. Don and Heather married in 1984. Heather introduced Don to the Lincoln Unity Church experience where she attended and he joined. Heather received her call to ministry and was ordained from the Unity School of Christianity seminary in 1989 where she won the Comprehensive Scholarship award. Don followed in 1991. They served as pastors in Unity churches in St. Joseph, Missouri, and Lincoln, Nebraska, before retiring from Unity Church of Ames in “That just amazes me that an Air Force captain 2004. could enroll in Naval War College by correspon(Continued on page 9) dence!” Don said. “I was the first graduate of 8 (Continued from page 8) He also uses his creative energies when singing tenor in the FCC Singers, and, on occasion, rewriting lyrics with common hymns such as Send the Light and How Can I Keep From Singing? In brief, Unity seeks the underlying spiritual message in Bible passages, usually deeper than the surface words might indicate.
