Our class is attending The Grapes of Wrath performance
at COS on Thursday, November 2. We need parent
chaperones. Please contact the school if you are available
to attend.
Students are working on a Wonders of the World project.
The project is due January 23, 2012, and must include a
research paper and physical project.
Please make sure your student is reading for 20 minutes
each night, Monday through Friday.
Attendance
Please remember to follow the attendance policy procedures
as outlined in the student registration packets each student
received at the start of the school year. Please call to inform
the school when your child is going to be absent and the
reason for the absence. Maintaining accurate attendance
records is not only important, but required.
A great weekend to all!

Mrs. Ingram’s Class
The presentations of October’s Book Report were
wonderful! I am very impressed with the creativity of our
students. We will have many opportunities to enjoy
reading, as a book report is a monthly assignment for 1st5th grades. We will start reading new books next week,
with the report due on the last Friday of the month
(November 30th).
Congrats to Michael Kellar, Alexander Noland, and Lily
Seliger for earning a ride on the fire truck! A special
thanks to Noah Stark’s dad, Jason, and the Gazelle Fire
Department for giving our kids the opportunity.
We are planning a Halloween celebration on Wednesday,
October 31st. Donations of treats and drinks are greatly
appreciated. We will play games in the morning and watch
a movie after lunch.
Respectfully,
Mary Ingram
Halloween Fun Facts
1. Because the movie Halloween (1978) was on such a tight
budget, they had to use the cheapest mask they could find
for the character Michael Meyers, which turned out to be a
William Shatner Star Trek mask. Shatner initially didn’t
know the mask was in his likeness, but when he found out
years later, he said he was honored.
2. The first Jack O’Lanterns were actually made from turnips.
3. Candy corn has been made with the same recipe by the
Jelly Belly Candy Company since around 1900.
4. The word “witch” comes from the Old English wicce,
meaning “wise woman.” In fact, wiccan were highly
respected people at one time. According to popular belief,
witches held one of their two main meetings, or sabbats,
on Halloween night.
5. Samhainophobia is the fear of Halloween.
6. Ireland is typically believed to be the birthplace of
Halloween.
7. Halloween was influenced by the ancient Roman festival
Pomona, which celebrated the harvest goddess of the
same name. Many Halloween customs and games that
feature apples (such as bobbing for apples) and nuts date
from this time. In fact, in the past, Halloween has been
called San-Apple Night and Nutcrack Night.
8. Harry Houdini (1874-1926) was one of the most famous
and mysterious magicians who ever lived. Strangely
enough, he died in 1926 on Halloween night as a result of
appendicitis brought on by three stomach punches.
9. Dressing up as ghouls and other spooks originated from
the ancient Celtic tradition of townspeople disguising
themselves as demons and spirits. The Celts believed that
disguising themselves this way would allow them to
escape the notice of the real spirits wandering the streets
during Samhain.
10. Pumpkins also come in white, blue, and green. Great for
unique monsters carvings!
