Most of us are blessed with a good day, but to help those who are less fortunate, we have placed a container in the caterers' room for non perishable food items to be given to the St. Paul's food pantry on Huffman Ave. All the food that was donated at the Quarter Auction has already been delivered to St. Paul. As you attend our many activities please, bring a few staples along to help those who are less fortunate than us. All those who attended the Quarter Auction had a wonderful time. I would like to thank all those who supported the auction by planning, participating and donating items for the auction. I look forward to more auctions, and I hope that more of you will participate. The TV will be on so you will not miss the Kentucky Derby. It’s time for the next of Jacob’s special dinners, on Saturday, May 11, at 6:00 p.m. I wasn’t able to make the last one, and let me tell you, I can’t express how disappointed I was to have to miss it, especially once I saw pictures of how wonderfully the place was decorated and heard how deliciously the dinner tasted! I’m definitely not going to miss the next one, In this newsletter you will also find more information about our a spring dinner featuring asparagus dishes. The flyer "Maibaum" and the DLT’s River Cruise on the Elbe on October in this issue contains all of the details, including the 4th, 2014. menu for the evening, and it all will be amazing. There is a strict limit, so do what you need to do to assure yourself a reservation. Greetings from your President. All information is in the flyer. Sign up as soon as possible! Uli Gaertner S p r i n g C o n c e r t Got Spring Fever? Need to get out and enjoy the signs of new life? How about coming out with a destination in mind? The choirs of the Dayton Liederkranz-Turner invite you to catch the spirit of spring as they perform for you on Saturday, May 4, at 4:00 p.m. in the Great Hall. Come listen to their beautiful sounds, and join them afterward for a coffee hour in the Ratskeller to enjoy some cake and coffee. Please see the flyer in this issue for more details, and mark your calendars now. See you there! G r o u n d s H e l p It’s getting to be that time of year again and I’m asking for help with spreading the mulch on the Liederkranz grounds. We won’t be putting as much down this year as the last couple of years, so you don’t need to bring any wheelbarrows or shovels. I’d like to get it done before the Spring Concert so that our grounds will look nice. If you can help, please come to the club on Saturday, April 27, 2013, at approximately 10:00 a.m. The rain date will be May 4, 2013. Vielen Dank!! Viking is one of the top river cruise lines and the Schumann was selected as one of the top river cruise ships in Condé Nast Traveler's Poll. Viking was chosen over Grand Circle based on overall value. I checked with Grand Circle to see if credits earned from previous travels could be used on the Elbe Cruise, but those credits can't be used for group travel. One of the benefits of a River Cruise is that you do not have to worry about your luggage and packing and unpacking, which makes traveling easier. Most of the meals are included on the cruise, increasing the value of the cruise. You can also bring your own libation on board for enjoyment. The trip includes excellent excursions that you would not want to miss. You can call me or the travel agent listed on the flyer. Uli Gaertner (937) 434-7999 Maibaum The DLT Board approved a plan to restore our Maibaum to its past glory. We currently have 9 of the original 12 plaques. If anyone has any idea where the missing 3 are, please let the board know. The 9 existing plaques will be restored to their original condition. If the 3 missing plaques cannot be located, 3 new plaques will be manufactured. We would love to have your thoughts on a new design. At this time we are asking our members to pay for the renovation of the plaques as a memorial to Liederkranz - Turner members now or in the past. For the existing nine the cost would be $150.00 each. Donors would be honored and remembered appropriately. One donor has already stepped forward and paid for a plaque. Please take this to heart. Restore the Maibaum. It is a part of our German tradition, visible for all to see. Contact President Uli Gaertner if you are interested in sponsoring a plaque. Thank you, The DLT Board Page 3 G e n e a l o g y G r o u p N e w s Greetings German Genealogy Group (GGG). Our spring presentations are quickly approaching. A great subject will be presented by our speaker, Debra Nowell of the Franklin County Genealogical Society, at our meeting on Saturday, April 27, at 1:30 p.m. in the Liederkranz Rathskeller. Debra will present " An Introduction to Genetic Genealogy" - Discover how DNA testing has created a dynamic new tool that can take your genealogy research from "Dead End" to on the "Road Again". To finish off the season in May, we will feature as a speaker, family researcher and author, Ann Uhlenhake O'Neill, who has published two family histories on her German ancestors. She will speak on her paternal family history published in late 2012, titled The Uhlenhake Heritage. Ann is a sister of Walt Uhlenhake, whose wife Jane is a member of our group. Please give a great welcome to Ann O'Neill of Charleston, South Carolina. We are privileged to have her speak on Saturday May, 25 at 1:30 p.m. in the Rathskeller. Please, many of you have not paid your 2013 dues. Please do so now so that we may continue to have outstanding programs. For the program on genetic genealogy a $5.00 fee will be charged to non-members. So please pay your dues. I will be looking for volunteers to help staff our genealogy center at the Germanfest Picnic on August 9,10, and 11. O t h e r Louise Gaertner German Genealogy Group A W o r l d A ’ F a i r The International Festival will be held May 17, 18, and 19, at the Dayton Convention Center.
