Ranger College Corse Description: Understanding music through the study of cultural
periods, major composers, and musical elements; illustrated with audio recording
and/or live performance.
Course Goals: By the end of the course students will be able to identify style, period,
tonality, meter as well other major musical structures. Students will use musical terms
correctly and at appropriate times.

Learning Outcomes:
1. Upon listening to a piece of music, be able to identify the historical period from which
it comes.
2. Be able to identify the sound of the major instruments in the orchestra.
3. Know the four instrumental groupings of the orchestra.
4. Recognize the sound of the piano, harpsichord, and organ.
5. Know the approximate dates of the Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and
20th Century periods in music.
6. Be able to identify appropriate Italian music terms.
Course Polices:
Attendance: Students are expected to attend class on time. Coming to class late can
disrupt the instructor and fellow classmates. Entering class later than 10 minutes after
the designated start time will result in a tardy. Two tardies will result in the equivalent
of one absence. As per the Ranger College attendance policy, missing six classes will
result in failure of the course.
Make up work from class will only be available for those with a college excused absence,
i.e. absent for sporting event or other school function. Make up work may be available in
other circumstances at the discretion of the instructor. If you will be gone for a long
period of time due to illness, family death, etc., let the instructor know immediately.
Student Behavior: Students are expected to be respectful of the instructor and each
other. This includes participation in class and attention to your fellow classmates.
Student Preparedness: Students are expected to bring all required materials to class.
This includes a writing utensil, paper and textbook.
Grading Policy: The grade in this course will be based on four basic items:
1) Weekly quiz/activity on the assigned reading and supplementary materials. The
quiz will consist of approximately 5-10 questions. This will be found on
blackboard and must be completed by Friday each week. The following weeks
quiz will become available on the Friday before the week begins. You will be able
to take each quiz up to 2 times during the week it is available. You may use your
notes and book.
2) In class activities: quizzes and activities. These will not be announced before
hand. You must be in class to gain these points with the exception of the special
circumstances found in the attendance policy.
3. Exams: There will be two exams in the course. The midterm exam will cover
topics from the first week of class up to the midterm. The final exam will be
comprehensive. You WILL NOT be able to take the midterm or the final early
4) “Drop the needle” test: At the midterm and at the end of the course you will be
responsible for being able to identify recordings of music. There will be 10 for
the semester (responsible for 5 on each test). There will be a recording of the
work and you must match the correct title, composer and historical/stylistic
period. These recording will be made available on blackboard and will be a part
of our in class listening examples and assignments.
