Director of Care Report
Well it is hard to believe another year has come and gone. 2012
proved to be another busy year for staff and residents at NHNH.
Thank you to everyone who helped to make the annual bazaar
another great success. The family Christmas dinners were very
well attended again this year.
Flu season has come upon us early this year. We have just
declared our Influenza outbreak over. I want to thank everyone
for their hard work during the outbreak. Remember good hand
washing is so important. Please use the hand sanitizer before and
after each visit. If you are feeling unwell it is best to postpone
your visit.
We look forward to another new year of providing our residents
and family excellent care.
On behalf of the resident and staff at NHNH we wish you a very

Fashionable Pets
Not exactly sure what kind of
lifestyle your pet should lead?
Take some advice from
Colleen Paige, a celebrity
Pet Lifestyle Expert and Dog
Psychologist, and dress up
your pet on January 14,
Dress Up Your Pet Day.
Paige’s concern, first and
foremost, is not dressing up
dogs and cats in funny costumes. Her first
concern is the well-being of animals. She works
to create a harmonious relationship between
animals and their owners. She explains that
mistreated animals often suffer from the same
problems as people: anxiety, depression, and
fear. It is her job to step in and train both
animals and owners to relieve these negative
behaviors.
So why dress up our pets? Does an animal’s
self esteem rise when it is dressed up? Some
pets actually seem to enjoy the attention they
get when dressed up! Here are some tips to
follow when considering dressing your pet:
Weather – Outfits must be weather
appropriate. Do not dress your pet in a
costume that will cause it to either
overheat or be too cold.
Comfort – The outfit must allow your pet to
move comfortably. Do not block an animal’s
ears, nose, mouth, or eyes. Animals must
use all their senses so they feel secure in
their environment.
Personality – The clothes should match the
animal. Allow your pet’s personality to
dictate its attire.
Believe it or not, there is an entire industry of
pet clothing designers. You can choose from a
wide variety of pet clothing lines or hand-make
your pet’s outfit yourself.

Sky’s the Limit
If you stack New York’s
Chrysler Building on top of the
Empire State Building, you still
wouldn’t have a building as tall
as the Khalifa Tower, or Burj
Khalifa as it’s called in Dubai,
United Arab Emirates. At 2,717
feet, this is the tallest structure
ever built, taller than the tallest
radio tower, antennae, or
skyscraper.
The Burj Khalifa is the
centerpiece of an entire campus
of buildings designed to attract
international attention. It will eventually be
surrounded by 30,000 homes, 9 hotels, parks,
19 other towers, a mall, and a man-made lake. It
was designed by the same Chicago firm that
designed the Sears Tower (now the Wallace
Tower) and the new World Trade Center building
in New York City. Perhaps it comes as no
surprise that the Burj Khalifa, having been
designed by a Chicago-based team, looks similar
to Frank Lloyd Wright’s 1956 design for a
proposed skyscraper he called The Illinois.
Unlike The Illinois, the Burj Khalifa is a
monumental reality built out of steel, concrete,
and glass. It houses 900 apartments, a hotel,
office space, a restaurant, and an observation
deck. Other than being the largest building in the
world, it holds many other impressive records:
Building with the most floors: 160
World’s fastest elevators: 40 mph
World’s highest restaurant: 122nd floor at 1,450 ft.
World’s second highest swimming pool: 76th floor
Burj Khalifa’s opening ceremony on January 4,
2010, had 10,000 fireworks and was broadcast
all across the Arab world. While it won an award
for “Best Tall Building of the Year,” perhaps a
more accurate award would have been “Building
of the Century.” Only one question remains.
Who will wash all of its 24,348 windows?

If Rocks Could Talk
January 7 is Old Rock Day,
and we’re not talking about
dusting off the old record
collection. How old are rocks
exactly? The oldest rocks on
Earth are located in the Jack
Hills of Australia and are
about 4.4 billion years old. Rocks in the
Northwest Territories of Canada were formed
over 4 billion years ago. Old rocks in Western
Greenland and Western Australia are about 3.8
billion years old.
One pastime of Old Rock Day is to search for
fossils. Some rocks, such as those in the
Northeast and Midwest U.S., are too old for
dinosaur fossils. The Age of the Dinosaurs
was roughly 225 to 65 million years ago –
young by rock standards! Instead, you might
find fossils of whales or clams from the floor of
ancient oceans. Part of the excitement of Old
Rock Day is that you never know what you’ll
find. If rocks could talk, what stories they
would tell.
