BULLETIN Excelling in separation solutions since 1952 # 2-201 Krebs Cyclones for the Chemical Industry The Krebs Cyclone is a low cost, free vortex centrifugal device used for separating solids from solid/liquid suspensions. Krebs Cyclones are used to concentrate feed slurries to centrifuges and filters in order to increase their capacity or to permit the use of smaller machines of lower horsepower. In many chemical process applications, cyclones may be used in place of centrifuges, filters, gravity settlers, or other more expensive solid/liquid separation devices. Cyclones that are used in the chemical industry typically have a continuous underflow discharge but they can also have accumulator tanks on the underflow for applications where the feed solids concentration is very low. Krebs offers cyclones that can make separations from approximately 10 microns and larger. The separation size that a cyclone can make is dependent on the feed characteristics, such as the solid and liquid specific gravities, the solids concentration and shape, and the liquid viscosity. Krebs Cyclones for the chemical industry are available in sizes ranging from 0.5 to 50 inch [12 to 1270 mm] in diameter. Krebs has cyclone designs and specifications that meet the difficult conditions of abrasion, corrosion, temperature, and pressure that are typically encountered in many processes. For very fine separations, Krebs has Small Diameter Cyclones that can be manifolded together in vessels to handle any flow rate. These cyclones are available in 0.5, 1.0, and 2.0 inch [12, 25, and 50 mm] diameter sizes. The Krebs fabricated metal cyclones and vessels can be designed for any operating pressure or temperature and can be designed to ASME code, section VIII division I specifications. Krebs Cyclones for the Chemical Industry can be made of virtually any metal and can be designed for any pressure and temperature. The Krebs Close Packed Manifold accommodates many individual cyclones, each uniformly fed using one common feed nozzle, providing consistent operation of all units. 5505 WEST GILLETTE ROAD TUCSON ARIZONA 85743 USA tel [520] 744-8200 fax [520] 744-8300 www.krebs.com BULLETIN Excelling in separation solutions since 1952 # 2-201 Krebs Cyclones have been installed for many different solid/ liquid separations in chemical process industries. The following includes some of the more common applications: Control of Crystal Size Washing or filtration of crystalline solids may be improved markedly by increasing the size of the crystals. Classifying the solids with cyclones, and returning fine crystals to the crystallizer or reaction vessel may increase the average size of the crystals. Thickening Ahead of Centrifuges and Filters Capacity of filters and centrifuges may be increased by pre-thickening of the feed solids. Many Krebs Cyclones have been installed for this purpose. Recovering Catalyst for Reuse Krebs Cyclones can be used for separation of catalyst from a catalyst/liquid suspension. Remove Solids from Scrubber Effluent Recirculation of gas scrubber effluent is common practice, but granular solids may cause abrasion and plugging of spray nozzles. Cyclones installed in the return effluent stream will separate the abrasive solids from the liquids. Krebs P1.0 Cyclone made of 316 stainless steel or any other alloy construction with threaded connections on the inlet, overflow, and underflow to ease installation of a single cyclone into an industrial process. *For applications not mentioned, please contact your local Krebs Representative or FLSmidth Krebs to see if a Krebs Cyclone can improve your process application.
