Community Demographics
The Lalonde Report* of 1974 established a framework for factors that determined health status:
lifestyle, environment, human biology and health services. Since 1974 other studies have been conducted that support evidence of key community factors that contribute to population health. These
factors are: income and social status; social support networks; education; employment/ working
conditions; social environments; physical environments; personal health practices and coping skills;
healthy child development; biology and genetic endowment; health services; gender; and culture.

Community Demographics
2.1 Population Change
The study of demographics and demographic trends
helps to reveal important information about a population
that makes up a community. As a population increases,
decreases or changes the needs for services, health care,
education and housing also change. Being able to look at
this information by neighbourhood allows for analysis of
population characteristics around the needs of a specific
target groups such as youth or seniors and can be targeted to a specific area of the community.

2.2 Population Density
Population density defines the number of people living in
a set unit area. Higher densities typically signify an area
within close proximity to numerous services and supports
(i.e. Commercial/Institutional spaces, transportation
infrastructure, and water/sewer services) that allow for
a large amount of people to live efficiently in a small
geographical area.
Population Density per Square Kilometre (2006)
The urban versus
rural nature of
Brantford•Brant is
illustrated in this
graph. East Ward has
the highest population
density within the City
of Brantford while North
Paris the highest in
the County. The graph
also indicates the rural
nature of the remaining
townships of the County
compared to the City of
Brantford.

2.3 Gender and Age
A population pyramid, also called “age pyramid”, is a
graph that illustrates the distribution by gender of different age groups. The number of males is shown on the left
and the number of females on the right. Brantford•Brant
Age Pyramid is a constrictive pyramid - a population pyramid showing lower numbers or percentages of younger
people. The Brantford•Brant census metropolitan area
has a greying population which means that people are
generally older.
The population pyramid for Brantford Brant County shows
expansion at the 40 to 54 age groups along with another
smaller bulge in the 10 to 19 year age groups while it is
declining at the 0 to 4 and 25-29 age groups.

2.4 Population by Age Group
A major benefit of being a census metropolitan area
(CMA) is the ability to look closely at a neighbourhood
make up and know the distribution of age groups
within that neighbourhood. It helps to answer questions about proportions of specific age groups in the

2.5 Median Age
The median age of a population gives the age where half
the population is above that value and half the population
is below that number. It can be significant when comparing to census data from other years and when comparing
to other neighbourhoods. It can also indicate the social
structure of the neighbourhood – a lower median age may
mean a higher proportion of children in the neighbourhood.

2.12 Family Unit Composition - Lone Parent Families
A lone parent can be someone who has been on their own
from the time a child is born (or adopted), but most begin
parenting with a spouse or common-law partner who later
leaves or dies. This is a change from forty years ago when
about 60% of lone parents were widows or widowers. The
widowed proportion is now down to approximately 20%.
Divorce, separation and out-of-wedlock births have re-
placed widowhood as the most prominent routes to single
parenting. (Vanier Institute of the Family). Lone parenting
affects not only the economic status of a family unit but
research has shown that these children are disadvantaged throughout their lives, compared to children from
two-parent families.
Number of Lone Parent Families (2006)
There were 5,875
lone parent families

CMA representing
16.5% of the total
census families with
approximately 80% lead
by a female up from
5,240 or 15.8% of all
families in 2001.

Community Demographics
2.14 Family Unit Composition - Female Lone Parent Families
There are significantly more female lone parents compared to male lone-parents in the Brantford•Brant Census
Metropolitan Area. Female lone parents are one of the
most impoverished family groups in Canada even though
they may be working full time. Traditional occupations
and pay inequity for women widen the wage gap along
with the lack of affordable and accessible childcare and
housing. Some female lone parent led families choose to
stay home to care for their children, making ends meet on
welfare incomes.
