Monday, December 8, 2014 • Luxembourg Arrival & Reception Our historian will give an overview of the Battle of the Bulge at the welcome reception and dinner. 70 years ago the U.S. Army achieved a momentous victory over the Nazis. We will honor the more than 76,000 U.S. soldiers killed, wounded or missing in action in that campaign. Our hotel: Novotel City Center, Luxembourg Dinner Tuesday, December 9, 2014 • Luxembourg Battle of the Bulge Touring - the “South Shoulder” The massive German offensive known as the Battle of the Bulge began on December 16, 1944. It took place in the remote Ardennes Forest of southeastern Belgium and northern Luxembourg. We begin with a visit to the Patton Memorial at Ettelbruck. Gen. George S. Patton, Jr. maintained his headquarters in Luxembourg from December 1944 through March 1945. Afterwards, we continue to Le Musée National d’Histoire Militaire in Diekirch. Then we go to the nearby village of Wallendorf-Pont where, on the German side of the Sauer River, an intimidating Siegfried Line bunker guards the bridge. From there, we return to Luxembourg City via the scenic town of Echternach. En route we pass the Junglinster Longwave Transmitter towers. Both sides broadcast from the towers in the information war—deemed equally important as the shooting war. Breakfast, Dinner Wednesday, December 10, 2014 • Luxembourg Battle of the Bulge Touring - the “North Shoulder” The Sixth SS Panzer Army was essential to the offensive in the north and while it overwhelmed many American units, others held their ground heroically and slowed the German advance. At Lanzerath—our first stop of the day— an American platoon held off the German 3rd Parachute Division for hours before being overrun. When the Germans broke out, they swept through town after town, taking prisoners by the thousands and committing atrocities. They summarily executed POWs. We will specifically go to Malmedy where the SS gunned down 86 prisoners at the Baugnez crossroads. On December 18, Joachim Peiper’s SS reached the village of Stavelot. Peiper’s forces then proceeded to the town of Trois Ponts where retreating U.S. Army combat engineers had already destroyed the bridge. They forged on to La Gleize and then to Stoumont. We visit each of these sites to study the scale and ferocity of the battle. Peiper’s men would go no further than La Gleize, and ultimately abandoned their vehicles in retreat. There we will see a fully restored King Tiger tank. Breakfast Thursday, December 11, 2014 • Luxembourg Battle of the Bulge Touring - Bastogne Today we explore one of the most famous battlefields in U.S. history! The Germans drove the U.S. 28th Infantry Division out of northern Luxembourg and entered Belgium. On December 19, the U.S. Army sent reinforcements just in time as three German divisions surrounded Bastogne. The following day the German Commander demanded the surrender of American forces, threatening to “annihilate” them. When Brig. Gen. Anthony C. McAuliffe of the 101st Airborne received the demand, he replied succinctly: “Nuts!” They had not shaken the American fighting spirit. We will visit several sites key to the weeklong siege, including the room where McAuliffe issued his now famous response. We also will visit Noville, Foy and the foxholes of Bois Jacques—the woods north of Bastogne where the men of E Company, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment fought through the bitterness of the coldest winter in 25 years. Gen. Patton’s Third Army, came from over 100 miles away to relieve besieged comrades. Our day concludes with a visit to the spot where Patton’s tanks broke the siege. Breakfast Friday, December 12, 2014 • Luxembourg The Grand Opening of the new Texas Aggies Go To War Exhibit Our first stop is the Luxembourg American Cemetery and Memorial—the final resting place of General George S. Patton, Jr. then the Sandweiler German war cemetery. From there, we return to Bastogne to experience the highlight of our trip—the grand opening of the brand new Texas Aggies Go To War Exhibit in downtown Bastogne. Prior to visiting the exhibit we will tour the Bastogne War Museum and the Mardasson Memorial. Breakfast, Dinner Saturday, December 13, 2014 • Luxembourg Option Day Today, each guest has the option of a free day in Luxembourg City to experience its unique culture, or returning to Bastogne for the re-enactments and 70th Anniversary commemorative activities.
