UMT Wishes You a Happy & United 2015 !
* The Highlight of 2014 - Unity Camp 07
Unity Mission Trust for the seventh time, was successful in holding a Unity Camp at Mirissa Maha Vidyalaya, Matara,
from the 9th - 12th of October 2014. This was the 18th major event of UMT, with 550 student leaders from across
Sri Lanka! This brings to nearly 6000+ the number of those linked to UMT.
The Camp commenced with Madam Shiranthi Wickramasinghe Rajapaksa, Chief Guest pinning badges on the 40
Student Group Leaders . The opening ceremony included colourful dance performances by troupes from Vembadi
Girls College Jaffna and Sri Sangamittha Girls School, Weligama. This was possibly, a rare occasion of a Northern
School performing on a southern school stage in front of a very large audience.
Unity Campers were then divided into 20 teams in which they worked, competed & bonded in the 4 days that
followed. As always, the campers, at first didn’t seem to be very happy to be parted from their school friends & were
uncomfortable with the thought of even sleeping with new acquaintances! However, as Camp progressed, friendships
began to build and develop - ending in the tears at parting on the 4th day, resulting in enduring friendships
being built - UMT’s legacy to Sri Lanka !!

The next day of camp consisted of an address of inspiration by Mahela
Jayawardene, Sri Lanka’s much loved former Cricket Captain. Others
who addressed the students were Mrs Nirmali Wickremasinghe, former
Principal of Ladies College; Mr Kushil Gunasekera, Founder Trustee of
the Foundation of Goodness and Bertal Pinto-Jayawardena, Founder
Trustee of UMT. The sports programme in the afternoon was affected
by heavy rain, which however did not dampen the spirits of the top
quality Sri Lankan youth !! The evening featured a performance by
young talented musicians- Sarith and Surith. Many of the Group
Competitions also began in the evening, including the solo singing &
dance competitions.
The third day of camp too had many exciting events including an
inspirational address by Dian Gomes- Managing Director MAS
Intimates (Pvt) Ltd, Art and craft sessions including traditional Sri
Lankan Mask making and a series of other group competitions,
including the Group singing and drama competitions. The day ended
with the candle lighting ceremony.
The candle lighting ceremony, as always, turned out to be the most
significant moment of the camp. It was indeed one of the most pleasant
and touching experiences to see and listen to Campers, from across Sri
Lanka, shouting out the name of our beloved Motherland, not only with
their voices but also with their hearts and souls, blending together in a
declaration of love and commitment to our Nation’s future success.
With the prize giving and closing ceremony, the 7th Unity Camp
ended on the 12th , with much sadness at parting from new friends,
but with a commitment to continue friendships, with each promising
to learn the languages of each other...strengthening the network of
bridges of friendships being built by UMT to foster Unity in Sri
Lanka !
