A history…..
The Traveling Public has Experienced the Hospitality of Bed & Board at the Hammel House since 1799. The
Jennings House was the Original Structure Built in this Location however the Log Tavern was Replaced in
1817 by the Present Portion. This Structure has Undergone Remodeling in the Years 1857, 1872 & 1987.
The Historic House Achieved its Present Name and Popularity During the Ownership of Enoch Hammel. Although Mr. Hammel was an Upstanding Member of the Community, a Candidate for County Sheriff and
Wayne Township Trustee his Establishment did not Always Reflect his Upstanding Citizenship. A local
Quaker woman, Mrs. Anna O’Neal, Described the Activities of the Hammel House as “Bacchanalian Revelry
and Ribald Conduct which was Hourly Enacted.” Mrs. O’Neal Temporarily Resided Directly Across the Street
from the Hammel House and she Pulled a Large Wagon in Front of her Cabin so
her Children would not Witness the Daily Misbehaving
The Hammel House was Remolded & Refitted by Mr. W. O. Gustin. Gustin Added Electricity, Hot & Cold
Water, & all the Other Fine Conveniences Possible in a First Class Country Hotel. The “Gustin House” also
Boasted a Livery & Feed Stable as Mr. Gustin was an Ardent Admirer of Fine Coach Horses. The Hammel
House History also Includes Hosting U.S President Martin Van Buren & Vice President Richard Johnson.
The Hammel House is Now Owned and Operated by the Bowman Family. Long Time Residents and Restaurateurs in Wayne Township. We are Well Known for our Small Town Charm & Charming Hospitality. If
