THE IUCN RED LIST OF THREATENED SPECIES™ Taxonomy Kingdom Phylum Class Order Family Plantae Tracheophyta Liliopsida Arecales Palmae Taxon Name: Ravenea hypoleuca Rakotoarin. & J.Dransf. Assessment Information Red List Category & Criteria: Critically Endangered B1ab(iii)+2ab(iii); D ver 3.1 Year Published: 2012 Date Assessed: December 17, 2010 Justification: This rare palm is only known from Vondrozo and Tsitongambarika forests where fewer than 40 mature individuals have been seen in an extent of occurrence and area of occupancy of 8 km². Current threats are mostly related to habitat loss and degradation due to timber extraction which are resulting in a continuing decline. The species is therefore listed as Critically Endangered. Geographic Range Range Description: Endemic to southeast Madagascar where it in known only from the Vondrozo and Tsitongambarika (Taolagnaro) forests. Country Occurrence: Native: Madagascar © The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species: Ravenea hypoleuca – published in 2012. http://dx.doi.org/10.2305/IUCN.UK.2012.RLTS.T195924A2433127.en 1 Distribution Map © The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species: Ravenea hypoleuca – published in 2012. http://dx.doi.org/10.2305/IUCN.UK.2012.RLTS.T195924A2433127.en 2 Population About 40 mature individuals have been observed at the two sites. The population trend is unknown. Current Population Trend: Unknown Habitat and Ecology (see Appendix for additional information) Grows in lowland humid forest, on valley bottoms or lower slopes, within a narrow altitudinal range of 550 to 600 m. Systems: Terrestrial Use and Trade There is no information on use of this species. Threats (see Appendix for additional information) The main threat to this species is habitat loss through clearance for shifting agriculture and logging. Conservation Actions (see Appendix for additional information) The species is not known to occur in any protected area. Conservation action is urgently needed for this species.
