So why did we start OzTREKK in 2002?
Matt: An Australian
who attended
university in both
Australia and Canada
Basically, because of our own university experiences in Australia and
Canada. As international students, we struggled to find info about, and
anticipate, the “ins and outs” of both the universities and programs in
which we were interested. Throughout the application, pre-departure and
orientation processes, it never ceased to amaze us how difficult it was
to obtain either “plain language” info or sound advice. It was this sense
of bewilderment that led us to countless discussions of how applying and
preparing to study overseas could be less complicated.
Those discussions led to OzTREKK.

Canada and Australia

When Beth and Matt started OzTREKK, one of their major goals was to
be able to provide scholarships to support OzTREKK students.
Why?
As former international students, Beth and Matt know that every little bit of funding
helps when you are studying. They each paid their own way to study overseas, and
had to access loans and work part-time during their studies to make it happen.
Because we’ve been there, done that, we created the OzTREKK Scholarships Fund.
We hope that OzTREKK Scholarships help you in a small way, to further enjoy the
experience of a lifetime that comes as an international student in Australia.
How much?
Each OzTREKK student who qualifies for an OzTREKK Scholarship will receive one
$500 scholarship during the first year of study. The OzTREKK Scholarship will be paid
directly towards your Australian university tuition.
How do I qualify?
“I just want to
thank you guys
for the help you
gave me in
getting down
here... it has to
be the greatest
experience of my
life. I just want
to express my
gratitude for all
you’ve done.
Thank you very
much.”
To obtain an OzTREKK Scholarship, you must:
1. submit your Australian university application directly to the OzTREKK office; and
2. accept your Australian university program offer through OzTREKK; and
3. commence your Australian university program during the 2011 or 2012 academic
year.

Australian studies.
This strong research focus provides a
stimulating atmosphere for students
and encourages the development of
research and critical thinking skills,
essential in any career.
The enthusiasm generated by
researchers also creates a great
teaching and learning environment
enjoyed by both staff and students.
While many programs offered by the
faculty seek to engage students
with issues relevant to life in
tropical northern Australia and the
Asia-Pacific region, significant
consideration is also given to
important social, cultural and
political issues in a wider global
context.
The career options available to the

Professional Accreditation
The Graduate Diploma of Education program offered at James Cook University is
accredited by the Queensland College of Teachers. With these qualifications, students
are also eligible to apply for teacher certification in Canada.
Teaching is a regulated profession in Canada. Each province and territory in Canada has
its own individual certification board and if you wish to teach in any one of these
locations, you must apply to for certification though the specific provincial or
territorial certification board. This stands for all students, whether they have completed
their teacher education in Canada or abroad. Upon completion of a Teacher Education
program, you are not automatically certified to teach.
Each certification board has its own set of rules and regulations that you must meet in
order to practise as a teacher in that location. OzTREKK recommends that students look
into the requirements of the respective certification board to determine the
requirements for teachers trained outside of their province.
OzTREKK maintains a strong relationship with our universities, consulting them and
working together with them to create Teacher Education programs that work for our
Canadian students and that meet the requirements of Canadian certification boards such
as the Ontario College of Teachers (OCT).

JCU’s Graduate Diploma of Education
Frequently Asked Questions
Q. How competitive is this program?
A. The application process is based on rolling admissions, meaning applications are
assessed as they are submitted. As long as an applicant meets the entry
requirements for the program, there is a strong chance they will be offered a
place in the program.
There is capacity to accept many international students in the program. Because
of this, applications are assessed as they are received and not in one main
selection round, thus competition with other applicants is not a factor in the
assessment process.
Q. Is there an application deadline for this program?
A. While there is no official application deadline for this program, it is strongly
suggested you have your JCU application submitted by early November. From
the time an application is submitted to the time a student is ready to fly out to
Australia, there are many steps to be completed. For this reason, it is best to give
yourself as much time as possible to complete the application process.
Q. After completion of this program will I be eligible to teach in Canada?
A. Please see the previous page, under, Professional Accreditation.
Q. What are the different teaching degrees in Australia?
A. In Australia, Teacher Education programs have different titles than those
offered in Canada. Furthermore, some Australian universities offer different types
of Education programs than those offered in Canada. Below are the different types
of programs students will come across when looking into their Australian Teacher
Education program options.
The Graduate Diploma of Education and Postgraduate Diploma of Education
programs are basic, one-year teacher certification programs in Australia which
corresponds to the Bachelor of Education in Canada. After students complete this
program, they are eligible to apply for teacher certification.
The Master of Teaching and the Master of Educational Practice programs are also
teacher certification programs. These programs are essentially one-year
Graduate Diploma in Education programs with an extra semester or two of courses
and practicum experience. These programs are designed for students who would
like to gain the qualifications to become teachers and who would like to further
their experience in Education. The Master of Teaching and Master of Educational
Practice programs are not Masters programs in the traditional sense, and should
not to be confused with a Master of Education program, which is a true Masterslevel program. The Master of Education is a degree you can only undertake once
you have gained your teaching certificate, and is designed for teachers who would
like to specialize in the teaching profession.
Q. How different are the Teacher Education programs in Australia compared to
those offered in Canada?
A. Teacher Education programs offered at our Australian universities are set up in
a similar fashion to those offered in Canada, providing comparable course content
and practicum placement hours. Furthermore, Australia’s teacher certification
boards set a similar level of standards to those in Canada.
“Personally, I love it
here in Townsville.
The weather is
absolutely gorgeous
and the people are
friendly. The city
provides you with the
feeling of a small
town atmosphere yet
there is plenty to see
and do in and around
the city. The campus
is set in the bush and
provides students the
ability to relax while
at school.”

Helpful Hints to complete the JCU
Graduate Diploma of Education Application
JCU’s Application for Admission to a
Postgraduate Coursework Degree
Section 1: Personal Details
Please ensure that your name is written exactly as it
appears on your Canadian passport.
Section 3: Proposed Postgraduate Coursework Program
The Graduate Diploma in Education is considered a
“Graduate/Postgraduate Diploma” program.
Please check this box at the beginning of this section.
You are able to apply for two program preferences in this
section. Only your first preference will be assessed and
if you are not granted an offer into your first choice, the
university will automatically assess your application for
your second choice.
If applying for the Secondary Stream, you will want to
state the two teaching methods you wish to be approved
for. Although there is not a specific space to write them
on this application, feel free to write them in the line
assigned for a “major”, or simply write them on a
separate piece of paper. If your teaching methods are not
stated somewhere in your application the university will
assess you for the teaching methods they deem fitting and
you will not necessarily be approved for your two
preferred teaching methods.
Please make sure you check the correct campus for your
program, as some programs are only offered at one
campus:
• Graduate Diploma of Education Primary:
Townsville campus only
• Graduate Diploma of Education Secondary:
Townsville campus only
• Graduate Diploma in Education (1-9):
Cairns campus only
Please note that each of these programs are only
available in the February intake.
Section 5: Credit for Previous Studies
Because Teacher Education programs are at the
postgraduate level, credit for previous studies is not
awarded.
