Sentence Lingo (you need to know!)
NP + VP = S {basic sentence structure}
NP + VP (DO, IO, PP) = S {additional sentence structure}
SUBJECT: The subject is the person or thing doing the
action: “the agent” or “the doer.”
HINT: Find the verb and ask: Who or what did the hurling?
Ms. Benton hurled the geography ball at a stunned Alexa.
PREDICATE: The predicate portrays the action of the
sentence. It includes a verb phrase as well as any modifiers
and/or objects.
Ms. Benton hurled the geography ball at a stunned Alexa.
DIRECT OBJECT: A noun phrase or pronoun that
receives the action of the verb.
HINT: Ask yourself: What did Ms. Benton hurl?
Ms. Benton hurled the geography ball at a stunned Alexa.
INDIRECT OBJECT: A noun phrase or pronoun to
whom or for whom the action of the verb is done and who
is receiving the direct object.
HINT: Ask yourself: At whom did Ms. Benton hurl the
geography ball?
Ms. Benton hurled the geography ball at a stunned Alexa.
PREPOSITIONAL PHRASE: A preposition followed by
a noun phrase or pronoun acting as an indirect object.
