04-09-17 Duke Chapel Palm Sunday Bulletin

Service of Worship
Palm Sunday
April 9, 2017
Eleven o’clock in the morning
 Bridging Faith and Learning 
“Entry into Jerusalem,” ca. 1030–1040
Our service begins with a procession of the palms to recall the triumphal
entry of Jesus into Jerusalem, fulfilling an ancient prophecy of the coming
Messiah. The palms we wave reflect the fragility of the celebration—since
a mere five days later, the crowd’s adulation turns to hatred. In his letter
to the Philippians, Paul declares Christ’s humble obedience on the way to
the cross, as we are invited to walk with Jesus this Holy Week.
The congregation is invited to reflect silently during the prelude as a time of prayer
and meditation. The Chapel welcomes families with children. If at any time during
the service your child needs a place for active play, please know there is a nursery in the
Chapel basement.

*Prayer of Confession and Words of Assurance (in unison)
Eternal God: In Jesus Christ you entered Jerusalem to die for
our sins. We confess that we have not hailed you as King, or
gone before you in the world with praise. For brief faith that
fades in trouble, for enthusiasms that fizzle out, for hopes we
parade but do not pursue, have mercy on us. Forgive us, God,
and give us such trust in your power that, in every city, we
may live for your justice and tell of your loving-kindness; for
the sake of our Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.
The minister speaks words of assurance.
*Peace
(All exchange signs and words of God’s peace.)

cometh in the Name of the Lord!”

Sermon—Who is This?
Response
*The Apostles’ Creed
I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth;
And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived
by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under
Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended
into hell; the third day he rose from the dead; he ascended
into heaven, and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father
Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and
the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the
communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection
of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
Call to Prayer
Minister: The Lord be with you.
People:
And also with you.
Minister: Let us pray.
The minister begins the prayers with a time of silence.

Mission of the Month
Offertory Anthem
Wondrous Love
Traditional
Arr. Alice Parker and Robert Shaw
What wondrous love is this, O my soul, O my soul,
What wondrous love is this
That caused the Lord of bliss
To bear the dreadful curse for my soul?
When I was sinking down, O my soul, O my soul!
When I was sinking down
Beneath God’s righteous frown,
Christ laid aside his crown for my soul.
To God and to the Lamb I will sing, I will sing,
To God and to the Lamb
Who is the great I AM,
While millions join the theme, I will sing.
And when from death I’m free, I’ll sing on, I’ll sing on.
And when from death I’m free,
I’ll sing and joyful be,
And through eternity, I’ll sing on.

Chapel Announcements
Today’s Flowers—The Lenten greenery for the worship service today is
given to the glory of God by the Duke Alumni Association.
Today’s Offering—All of today’s cash offerings and undesignated checks
will be used to support the Chapel’s Mission of the Month: Partners for Youth
Opportunity. PYO is a multi-year program that provides academic support,
economic stability programming, community-based mentoring, and community
engagement opportunities to 100 Durham youth who receive free or reduced
lunch, are first generation immigrants, or have a family member who is or has
been incarcerated. PYO works with students from their 8th grade year through
their second year in college. The program model is based on having extended,
trusting relationships with students and their families, and providing them
with targeted, impactful program services. By leveling the playing field for
low-income youth despite individual and environmental risk factors, PTO is
helping them to achieve their educational and vocational potential.

Duke University Chapel
Duke Chapel is a Christian church of an unusually interdenominational character, with a tradition of
stirring music, preaching, and liturgy. It is also a grand building, suitable for hosting major events in the
life of the University and its members; it further acts as a moderator for the diversity of religious identity
and expression on campus. We welcome you to our life of worship, learning, dialogue, and service.
