Well, we could if there was an “offsides” rule in soccer, which there is not. The correct term is “offside” (no s.) For a player on an offense to legally receive the ball or be directly involved in a play, when the ball is touched by a teammate, that player must be even with or closer to the midfield stripe than both of the last two defenders closest to the goal. Note that it is where the player is when the ball is struck, not when they receive it. RULES RULE! 1. T/F A throw in that goes into the goal counts as a goal. 2. T/F It’s OK to step on the touch line during a throw in. 3. T/F Earrings may be worn as long as they are covered with tape. Here is something you may not know. It is perfectly legal to be in an offside position! A team can definitely score a goal even if a player is in an offside position, provided that the player does not participate in play by touching the ball or demanding the defense’s attention. A player cannot be offside on a corner kick, a throw in, a goal kick, or while still in the defensive half of the field. A player CAN be whistled for being offside on a direct or indirect free kick. 2017 Spring, Edition No. 1 ANSWERS: 1. False 2. True 3. False! The only removable jewelry that is permitted is a medic alert bracelet/necklace, which must be covered. 2 Winchester United March 14, 2017 DO YOU KNOW ANY YOUNG SOCCER SUPERSTARS BORN IN 2009, 2010, or 2011? UNITED - All of your most pressing United parenting questions answered by a multi-player parent and coach still figuring it out My player doesn’t play as much as I think he/she should. Should I talk to the coach about this? Excellent question! All United parents ask themselves this question, and the answer is…..probably not! Equal playing time is not a thing in travel soccer. Coaches may choose who plays based on skill set, energy, team “fit,” an ability to play a particular position, performance in practice, game day readiness/aggression, the opponent, the weather, or a number of other factors which may 2017 Spring, Edition No. 1 not be immediately apparent to a parent. While I am sure this is not the case with your player, sometimes a parent overestimates their child’s ability. Instead of confronting the coach directly, why not have your player ask the coach what he/she can do to improve skills and play more? The player could learn that playing time is earned, not asked for, and not procured by a parent. In a best case scenario, your player will be inspired to practice harder and practice more, which will lead to increased confidence and skill, and, in most cases, more playing time, which is an excellent life lesson. 4
