Introduce metaphor by reading excerpt from Macbeth: what metaphors are used and how does this express Macbeth’s feelings for life? Evaluation: classwork Tuesday, December 13 Objectives: To apply close reading to a poem To determine the characteristics of poetry To understand the purpose of poetic devices Procedure: Review metaphor by reading An Ocean of Memories: what metaphors are applied, and how do they express the speaker’s feelings towards his/her family? Apply metaphor to A Poison Tree: how do water, tears, sun, smiles, apple and the ending of the poem act as metaphors? What are they metaphors for? Introduce rhyme scheme and apply it to A Poison Tree. Students print off song lyrics and add rhyme scheme.
