 Complete weekly vocabulary review
 Share 8-line poems
 DO NOW – what do these words mean? Wrath, foe, deceitful, wiles? Discuss and provide
context if necessary?
 Apply first reading to A Poison Tree: who is the speaker? What is the situation?
 Complete activity to determine tone and mood and the words used to develop these feelings.
 Introduce metaphor by reading excerpt from Macbeth: what metaphors are used and how does
this express Macbeth’s feelings for life?

Objectives:
 To apply close reading to a poem
 To determine the characteristics of poetry
 To understand the purpose of poetic devices
Procedure:
 Review metaphor by reading An Ocean of Memories: what metaphors are applied, and how do
they express the speaker’s feelings towards his/her family?
 Apply metaphor to A Poison Tree: how do water, tears, sun, smiles, apple and the ending of the
poem act as metaphors? What are they metaphors for?
 Introduce rhyme scheme and apply it to A Poison Tree.
 Students print off song lyrics and add rhyme scheme.

DO NOW: List 5 things that you are; list five things you are not. Share.

Read A Hot Property and determine speaker/situation.
Read the poem a second time and discuss structure and repetition.
Model a list poem.
ASSIGN: students create their own list poem.

 Share list poems.
 Watch video “Graffiti: Art of Vandalism” and discuss: is graffiti art or vandalism? What makes
something artistic? What makes someone creative?
 Define and provide examples of alliteration and imagery.
 Read Street Painting and determine speaker and situation.
 Re-read the poem.
 Underline examples of alliteration and circle images that stand out.
 Analysis: what does the poem say about the creative process in graffiti? How is it like or unlike
other creative processes? Share
