As I sat down to write this message,
it occurred to me that this is the
last time that I will be writing a
bulletin message to you as your
President. I had to sit back and
reflect upon where we were two
years ago compared to where we
are now. We were a congregation
struggling to stay alive. In spite of
the woes, we were also a
congregation committed to staying
alive. Two years later, I feel that
our commitment is stronger than ever.
Two months into my tenure as President, we held a
special meeting of the General Board. At that meeting,
we challenged the board to come up with short term and
long term goals for the synagogue. The main areas
identified for those goals included membership, liturgy,
building, fundraising, school and volunteerism. I am
happy to report that we are well on our way to achieving
most of the goals that were set that night.
When my tenure started, we had 199 member families.
We now have 280. Thank you to everyone who worked
hard to make our membership drives so successful. I
would also like to welcome our new members who are
joining our synagogue family. As you get to know the
people who make up this congregation, you will learn, as
I have, how special this synagogue family can be.
We also set out to make our worship practices more
interesting and increase attendance at weekday Minyans.
While we have maintained our conservative roots, the
success of the Friday Night Unplugged and Saturday
Morning Live speak for themselves. Furthermore, the
weekday Minyans are consistently well attended.
Thanks to your commitment, we now have a building that
is warm in the winter, cool in the summer, safe, solid and
welcoming. Keep your eyes and ears open because there
are more improvements to come.
This year was a great fundraising year and we needed it.
Our fundraising is critical for our survival. We still have
cash flow issues and fundraising accounts for over 1/3 of
our operating budget. But we continue to learn what
events work and how to run them. This knowledge will be
critical going forward for the coming years. Our
fundraising doesn't stop in June. Please continue to
support our fundraising efforts and buy SCRIP as often as
you can through the summer months.

From the Rabbi’s Desk
The Shul and Shavuot
Once, Rabbi Lev Yitzchak of
Berditchev went to the marketplace in
the middle of a busy weekday. There
he stood and proclaimed lessons from
the Torah. One of the men in the
market said, “Rabbi, with all due
respect, we are trying to conduct
business here.” “I’m sorry,” replied
the Berditchever. “I just thought that
since you always talk business in the
synagogue, I could talk Torah in the
marketplace.”
In theory, worshippers speak of
different matters in the shul than in the
street. But, all too often, we do not
adjust our attitudes at all. Even on
Shabbat morning, people will strike
deals and gossip just as freely with a
prayer book in hand.
The synagogue is, at its best, a true
sanctuary, even from one’s own work.
It should provide a break from the
getting and spending and grasping that
characterizes the market. The doors
open to a place for safety and spirit.
The Berditchever was right of course
— there is room for Torah in the
marketplace. But, it serves us all well
if in the shul there is a chance to retire
from the rigors of work and renew
one’s soul. This is a profound lesson
to be internalized as we approach
Shavuot, the holy day which
celebrates the giving of the Torah and
Torah learning.
A happy and meaningful
Zman Matan Torateinu.

Rabbi Gerson South Area Religious School News
From the Ed Director
Our students did wonderful job leading the Shabbat
Morning Live service on March 21st. Yasher Koach to all!
Special thanks to the School Committee members that
shopped, prepared, set up and cleaned up for the Kiddush
Luncheon that followed.
In our preparation for Passover our students shared a variety
of Passover activities that strengthened their understanding
of the Passover Holiday. They enjoyed creating Passover
placemats, highlighting the order of the Seder and the 10
plagues, decorating Matzah covers, making salt water cups
to grace their Seder tables, and creating their own Seder
plates.
Extra special thanks to School Committee chair, Jennifer
Freshman, for supplying oranges for our students during the
Passover Holiday.
Our emphasis for April is on ISRAEL. Our staff is working
on specific activities all related to Israel, and the love for
Israel. One of our students will be going to Israel and has
offered to bring our notes to the Kotel, to actually be placed
in a safe spot between the bricks of the ancient Kotel! We
are so grateful!
On a personal note, I thank you all for the outpouring of love
and support during the difficult loss of my mother last month.
I have greatly appreciated your calls, visits, texts, cards and
emails and will always cherish your kind words and
thoughtfulness.

President’s Message (cont.)
Our school is still small and we are still worried about
its future. However, we are bringing in new students.
We have a long way to go to make our school vibrant
again, but, we remain steadfast to that goal.
Our synagogue doesn't work without volunteerism.
While people have stepped up to help at our events and
our services, I still think that we have a long way to go
to achieve our goal of "too many volunteers". Please
volunteer at events or for committees. This is your
synagogue so please help out however and whenever
possible.
While I still think that we have many struggles ahead of
us, I believe that we have turned a corner in the life of
our congregation. I wish I could take credit for this
renewed life, but I can't. It is all because you, the
congregation, made a commitment two years ago to the
survival and vitality of our synagogue. We should
celebrate and take pride in how far we have come, but
realize that we have more work to do. Let's not sit back
and get complacent. Instead let's redouble our efforts
towards achieving our goals.
3, 2015
This past year we celebrated our 95th birthday. Now,

Comedy Dinner Theatre
(cont. from page 1)
The sell-out crowd thoroughly
enjoyed local comedian Chance
Langton, our Master of Ceremonies.
Chance has been part of the Boston
comedy scene since the late 1970's
with performances at Symphony Hall,
the Comcast Center, and many other
well-known venues. He has been on
stage with comedic greats like
Rodney Dangerfield, Joan Rivers,
and now he can add ATC and Rabbi J
to these impressive lists.
Mike Donovan, another local
comedian, has also been doing standup comedy since the 1970's. When
he's not busy entertaining at ATC, he
spends his time performing in Las
Vegas and Atlantic City.
And then there was local
actress/comedian Patty Ross, whose
performances have ranged from
opening for Andrew Dice Clay in
10,000 seat venues to performing at a
convention of Montessori Nuns.
We're not sure exactly where ATC
will fall in the spectrum.
The evening also included a "lottery
ticket raffle". The lucky winner took
home an assortment of lottery tickets,
one of which offered a chance to win
$4,000,000!
Our fabulous volunteers and kitchen
crew worked hard to make this
special show a smash hit. Many of
our guests were heard commenting on
the fun-filled evening with topnotch
entertainment and delightful foods at
a bargain price. The funds raised
from this event will help support
