I think that each of us has been tempted to do or say something that we knew was wrong. Perhaps we were tempted to lie, or to cheat in a game, on a test, or even on our income taxes. Perhaps we tried to take the easy way out or succumbed to peer pressure to drink or try illegal drugs. Perhaps we sought physical pleasure through inappropriate relationships. Temptations are all around us and they constantly are bombarding us and it is difficult to stay strong solid in our faith. Many people when caught doing something wrong quickly dismiss their action by saying, “the devil made me do it.” Today, Jesus encounters the devil and is tempted. Jesus had been fasting and praying for a long time and I am sure that he was very weak. Jesus, being fully human, also had weaknesses and the devil knew exactly what they were – just as he does for us. However the good news is that Jesus was victorious against the devil – because he placed his hope and trust in God alone! Jesus knew that it was only through the power of prayer and the grace of the Holy Spirit that he would prevail. The same holds true for us. The good news is that Jesus shows us that we can be victorious over our temptations. We do not have to submit to the ways or pressures of the world and not even the taunts and temptations of the devil have power over us. If we choose to use the power of prayer and the grace of the Holy Spirit there is nothing that we cannot do and there is nothing that can harm us. Let us take an example from Jesus on how to be strong against the power of evil. The Holy Season of Lent Lent begins on Ash Wednesday and ends quietly on Holy Thursday before the evening Mass of the Lord’s Supper. For forty days we prepare to celebrate the great day of Easter, the highest feast day of the entire Church year. With the Mass of the Lord’s Supper we enter into a new season, the Sacred Triduum (the three days) that intensely leads us to the glory of Easter. At the heart of the liturgical year stands the Triduum, all other seasons either lead up to or flow from these sacred days. Everyone should mark their calendars now and plan to celebrate with us these sacred days, April 13, 14 and 15, and the joy of Easter Sunday, April 16. On Ash Wednesday we are marked or signed with ashes to remind us of who we are, sinners, and like the barren branches we anticipate the coming Spring – the coming of new life. Lent is a time to acknowledge our need for repentance and turning back to the Lord. Lent is not just a time “to give up” something, but a time of decision – deciding for conversion and returning to God. During Lent we are called to purify ourselves through the Sacrament of Reconciliation and the traditional disciplines of prayer, fasting and almsgiving. You will notice a change in the liturgy during the season of Lent. The green vestments have been replaced with violet to remind us of the somberness of the season. The Gloria will be omitted, and the word Alleluia is not said or sung during Lent. All of this preparing us for Easter glory, where we boldly proclaim that we are an Alleluia people, who have been saved by the Cross of Jesus and are called to new life in the joy of God’s Spirit. From Our Pastor I strongly urge you not to waste these next forty days of Lent, but to make the most out of them. Use the various opportunities for prayer to deepen your relationship with Christ. Each year God gives us this time for our renewal and conversion. What is more important than your soul? Is it money, friends, summer homes, vacations, sports, or television? Recall the words of Christ – be prepared for you do not know the day or hour. How much more time are you willing to gamble? May we rise from the ashes of sin and come alive with the fire of faith given to us at Pentecost! St. Patrick’s Day Parade Mass Next Sunday, March 12th, St. Cajetan will once again host the annual South Side Irish Parade Mass at 9:00AM. Fr. Tom Hurley will be the presider. Please note that due to the events planned around the neighborhood there will not be an 11:00AM Mass on Sunday March 12th. Baptismal Font I wanted to give you an update on the status of our new baptismal font. The contracts were signed in January and the font is being constructed. In the next couple of weeks you will notice some “construction” in the back of the Church as some of the floor tiles will have to be removed so that electricity can be run to the place of the new font. Luckily we have plenty of tile to replace what was removed. If all goes well, I am hoping that the new font will be ready for the Easter Vigil when the new waters of baptism are blessed. I will keep you informed. Yours in the Crucified Christ, Parish Life The Sanctuary light burns in memory of Martin Huske. The Executive Board then reads all essays, and chooses one girl and one boy as the overall winner. The Peanut Butter & Jelly Ministry is grateful to everyone who contributed supplies that were needed. Students of all winning essays are recognized at the Christian Leadership Awards Ceremony. Stock up on Easter treats. If you have any questions, please call Andrea Hogan at 773-4450503. Grace’s essay was a tribute to her Seventh Grade Teacher Mrs. Terry Lonergan. Grace noticed that Mrs. Lonergan always recognized the good in people. Even though Grace hasn’t seen Mrs. Lonergan since 7th Grade, she wanted to thank her for changing her life simply because she took the time to recognize the things that made her special. She will remember Mrs. Lonergan’s lesson that taught her that integrity is choosing what you know is right when other people are not, and doing the right thing even when the world is not watching. If you are contemplating making a will or changing your will and plan to leave something to charity, please keep St. Cajetan Parish in mind. A bequest to your parish continues your love and concern for your parish long after your life on earth has been completed. We Congratulate Sean and Grace for representing St. Cajetan School as they recognize outstanding Christian Leaders. 4 St. Cajetan School News Human Concerns Respect Life News Prayer – Education – Action If someone you know is suffering from the effects of an abortion, call Project Rachel of the Archdiocese 312-337-1962. Thursday, March 16 7:00 p.m. in the Church Using this sacred season of Lent to draw closer to the Passion of our Lord Jesus Christ, our Parish Mission will also prepare us for the Shroud of Turin exhibit. The Shroud Replica Exhibit will be displayed at St. Cajetan from March 18 - 26. Crucifixion Bartolomé Estebán Murillo (1675) Father Jerome Kish, pastor at St. Matthew’s Church in Glendale Heights, will offer a meditation on the Lord’s Passion, drawing from his background as a Catholic priest of the Diocese of Joliet with a doctorate in Electrical Engineering. We look forward to seeing you on Thursday, March 16 for our Parish Mission. EXPLORE THE HISTORY AND SCIENCE OF THE TURIN Man the Shroud Exhibit S a t u r d a y, M a r c h 1 8 - S u n d a y, M a r c h 2 6 What is the Shroud of Turin? This exhibit, does not attempt to “prove” the Shroud authentic, but the message of Christ is clearly presented as the evidence is examined. “One of the most perplexing enigmas of modern times.” National Geographic For more information, contact Deb Breakey: [email protected] The Shroud of Turin is a long linen cloth made out of flax and measures 14 ft. long and 3.5 ft. side. It bears the faint image of a bearded, crucified man with bloodstains that match the wounds of the crucifixion suffered by Jesus of Nazareth as recorded in all four Gospel narratives. The Shroud has been preserved and revered for centuries as the actual burial shroud that wrapped Jesus Christ. It is the single most studied artifact in human history; modern science has completed hundreds of thousands of hours of detailed study and intense research on it, yet the Shroud remains a profound mystery. About the Exhibit The Man of the Shroud Exhibit includes a canvas reproduction of the Shroud and presents the results of a comprehensive scientific and forensic study with numerous photographs and illustrations. This Shroud Exhibit draws audiences into the historical, medical and scientific investigation while comparing Christ’s painful ordeal of crucifixion as revealed in holy Scripture and on the Shroud. The exhibit will be displayed in the Church for 9 days; allowing many opportunities for personal viewing at your own pace.
