Hospital in Boonville. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 6, at the H.T. May and Son
Funeral Home in Boonville with the Rev. Horace Hopkins officiating. Burial will be in Boonville
Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until time of services on Friday at the funeral
home. Mr. Burd was born April 16, 1910, in Boonville to Charles and Sally Elbert Burd. He
married Clara Hinkle, and she preceded him in death. He had been employed at Kemper
Military School in Boonville before moving to Kansas City. He also worked as a security guard for
Mercantile Bank in Kansas City. He was a member of the Eighth Street Baptist Church in Kansas
City. Survivors include a nephew, Harold Keith Lucas of Boonville, and a great-niece, Kaneshya
Lucas of Columbia. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Harold Fredrick Lucas

was an Army veteran. He was a member of the Freewill Baptist Church in Blackwater. Survivors
include a daughter, Tina Coleman Williams of Columbia; four sons, Mark Coleman of Baltimore,
Md., Darryl Coleman of Ocean Side, Calif., J.D. Coleman of Bloomington, Ill., and William
Anthony Poole of Boonville; a brother, Nelson Coleman Jr. of Chicago; two sisters, Georgia

6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Second Baptist Church in Fayette. Mrs. Hopkins was born May 31, 1930,
to the Rev. Ross Ward and Laura Viola Parker Ward in Kansas City. She married the Rev.
Horace Hopkins in 1977, and he survives. She attended Dalton Vocational School. She retired
from the Marshall Rehabilitation Center after more than 31 years of service. She was a member
of Second Baptist Church in Fayette. She played piano and organ, gave piano lessons to Sunday
school children and taught junior Sunday school for more than 20 years. She was the
corresponding secretary of the Mt. Zion Baptist District Women's Auxiliary for 15 years. She was
secretary for the Deborah Circle and pianist and secretary for many other groups for more than
20 years. Survivors also include six sons, Nathaniel Conway of Fayette, Wilbur James Conway
of Troy, Michael Conway of Marshall, David Conway of Stockbridge, Ga., and Kevin Conway of
Jefferson City; two stepsons, the Rev. Keith Hopkins of Columbia and the Rev. Dale Hopkins of
Boonville; three daughters, Sandra Napier of Marshall, Elizabeth Sowell of Linn Creek and
Penelope Butler of Marshall; three stepdaughters, Katherine Sharon of Columbia, Christie
Hopkins of Marshall and Kay Hopkins of Slater; three sisters, Barbara Johns and Elizabeth
Coleman, both of Kansas City, and Eunice Green of Huntsville, Ala.; 40 grandchildren; 26 greatgrandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Memorials are suggested to the American
Cancer Society, the Howard County Hospice or the Second Baptist Church building fund.

Edith D. née Hester; 82, of Boonville passed away on Monday, July 14, 2008 in the comfort of
her home, surrounded by her family and friends. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m.,
Saturday morning at the St. Matthew AME church with Elder Wayne Jones officiating. Burial will
be in the Boonville Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Friends may call from 7-8 p.m., Friday at the
H.T. May and Son Funeral Home in Boonville. Born Dec. 11, 1925, Edith was the daughter of
the late Clarence and Cecil Hester. Edith was joined in marriage on June 13, 1943 to Arthur
Rowles in Versailles, Mo. They eventually moved to Boonville where they settled down to raise
their large close-knit family. Edith worked as a Medical Record Technician at Cooper County
Memorial Hospital for 30 years. She was very active in the church and her community. Edith was
a member of Morgan Street Baptist Church for 30-plus years before becoming a founding
member of New Hope Christian Church. She was a member of Teach and Sew Sewing Circle and
charter member of CCBC. Edith was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers and one
sister, spouse and two sons. She is survived by her daughter, Ruthellyn (Richard) Hatcher of
Gary, Ind., her sons, John (Tammie) Rowles and Ronald (Patricia) Rowles of Kansas City, Mo.,
Eddie (Russana) Rowles, Steve (Forescee) Rowles of Los Angeles, Calif., and Michael (Jennifer)
Rowles of St. Louis, Mo.; eleven grandchildren: Jared (Natika) Rowles, Patrick Rowles, Brian
Rowles, Jeremy Rowles, Dr. Joanna Rowles, Attorney Ragen (Jerome) Hatcher-Matthews,
Monique Rowles, Shaneeka Rowles, Rachelle Hatcher, Renee Hatcher, Alex Rowles; two
daughters-in-law, Macola and Venetta Rowles; eleven great-grandchildren and four on the way;
and a host of family and friends, most notably her best friends, Estelle May and Mary Gerling.
The family would like to thank Edith’s oncologist, nurses and staff of the Missouri River Hospice
for the loving care they gave Edith in her final days to make her transition as comfortable as
possible.

services at the church. Virginia was born in Lone Elm, Mo. on Feb. 1, 1923, the daughter of
George and Lorene Wright Drew. She graduated from Charles Sumner High School in 1941. She
attended Howard University in Washington, D.C. She was employed by RCA for 27 years. She
married James Wilson who preceded her in death. She was a former member of Morgan Street
Baptist Church, where she served as church clerk and was a member of the Senior Choir. She
was a volunteer for the Boonslick Senior Center. She was also a member of the Interfaith
Women’s Sewing Club. She was preceded in death by her parents, three sisters and two
brothers. Survivors include two sisters, Hirene Williams of Boonville and Judy Watkins of
Ellenwood, Ga.; and two brothers, Harold Drew of East Orange, N.J. and George Drew of
Montclaire, N.J. Arrangements are under the direction of the H.T. May and Son Funeral Home
in Boonville.
