Dear Animal Lovers,
Fall 2015 • Vol 23 • Issue 1
There is a new buzz of excitement in the air at Seattle
Humane, and I’m thrilled to be able to share some
important updates with you, our supporters and fellow
animal champions.
This has already been a year of incredible adoptions
and it also marks a year of “firsts” for Seattle Humane.
We celebrated our 26th annual Tuxes & Tails gala,
our most successful yet, raising an astounding $5.3
million! We were blown away to see the support from
our community as we let the proverbial “cat out of the
bag” and publicly revealed our campaign to build a
new shelter and veterinary teaching hospital.
For years we have been operating at maximum capacity
here at the shelter, using converted closet space as a
surgery suite and creatively working around the restrictions of our aging building - all with the goal
of saving as many lives as possible. Our dream of a new facility is closer to becoming a reality. As of
this writing, we have raised $22 million of our $25 million goal!
With a new facility will come a new look and feel for Seattle Humane, and over the next few months
we’ll be unveiling a new website and a fun ad campaign to engage the entire community in our
building project. Through all of these exciting changes, we remain committed to our mission of
saving lives and completing families.
In addition to our capital campaign, we are looking ahead to the excitement of our annual Walk for
the Animals, a pet-and-family-friendly fundraiser taking place in an all-new location at Green Lake on
Oct. 18. We look forward to seeing you there!
As you can see, we have a lot to be excited about. Most importantly, we know that none of this
would be possible without each of you, our cheerleaders and faithful supporters. Thank you for your

Like Our New Look?
Seattle Humane has a new logo, a new website coming
soon, and an exciting venture ahead of us! News of our
capital campaign to build a new shelter and veterinary
teaching hospital went public at the Tuxes & Tails gala
last May with a surprise announcement: we have raised
$22 million and we’re well on our way to raising the $25
million needed to open the new shelter in 2017. Stay
tuned for more exciting developments to come!

photography skills as part of their shelter pet mascot project.

Animal Advocates
A Tribute to Fred Aberle
Fred was a hardworking man dedicated to his job and serving his
country. He was a pilot during World War II and his interest in and
love for aircraft led him to a career in aeronautical engineering
until the age of 75. His professional journey involved several
exciting projects, including the construction of a space shuttle!
Fred lived in Mill Creek with his wife, Shizuko, and their adorable
little Shitzu, Jessica. After Fred’s wife passed away in 2006, Jessica
was a great source of comfort. Fred and Shizuko adored Jessica
and they made plans for her care for when they were no longer
able to. When Fred passed away, his friends Art and Sandee gladly
accepted the responsibility of caring for Jessica until her last
breath at the age of 18.
Art ensured that Fred and Shizuko’s legacy and love for the
animals lived on by carrying out their wishes, and distributing
funds from their estate to help the thousands of orphaned animals
who come to Seattle Humane in need of care and a loving family.

Pet Tips Hiking with your pet
Explore the Outdoors
Hiking is a great activity for you and your four-legged companion. Here are a few tips to help make your hiking trip a safe and
pleasant experience for you and your furry friend.
Properly Train Your Dog
It‘s important that your dog is trained before taking on hiking adventures. Not only is it important for obedience, but for fitness
and endurance as well. Start out with small hikes and increase the distance based on your comfort level and that of your dog. Don’t
forget to bring and use a leash!
Don’t Feed Right Before Hiking
To avoid sickness, do not feed your dog right before you exercise or hike. Feed them afterward when they are rested.
Provide Plenty of Water
Bring plenty of water and a bowl for your dog. This keeps them from becoming dehydrated and helps them stay energetic during
the entire hike.
Lost Dog Safety
Make sure your dogs are microchipped and they have an updated tag on their collar. If for any reason your pet gets lost, tags and a
microchip will increase the likelihood that they will be returned to you.
Update Vaccinations
Before setting out into the wilderness, check your pet’s
veterinary records and make sure his vaccinations are up-todate. Curious about whether or not your dog needs a vaccine
for Leptospirosis or a rattlesnake bite? Ask your veterinarian for
region-specific vaccines.
Safety First
Don’t forget to pack a first aid kit. Most injuries to dogs occur
on the pads of their feet. Hiking can cause cuts and scrapes
from rocks, sticks, thorns, ice, etc.
Better yet – get prepped by taking a Pet CPR/First Aid course at
Seattle Humane! Look for upcoming classes in our course catalog at seattlehumane.org/training.
Be a Good Pet Ambassador

Be sure to carry plenty of poop bags and clean up after
your pup to keep the trails clean.
Always keep your dog on a leash. Extending leashes are
great for wide open spaces, but not on hiking trails.
Closely supervise your dog around children, other hikers
and other dogs.
Be wary when hiking at dawn or dusk with your dog as
this is when wild animals tend to be most active.

This year’s gala raised $5.3 million
for pets in need and one special
project to help many more…
Glittery gowns, adoptable pets, phenomenal auction items, gourmet food and wine, and what else? An exciting
announcement that Seattle Humane is building a new animal shelter and veterinary teaching hospital slated to open
in 2017. With this announcement finally public, the ballroom erupted into applause and a sea of auction paddles. Our
guests were rewarded with even better news – Seattle Humane as of that evening had raised $21 million of its $25
million goal.
We’d like to give a special thank you to Jim and Bet Schuler of the Schuler Family Foundation, who pledged $1
million to the Fund-A-Need project. Another thank you is owed to the Gene J. Colin & Susan M. Janus Charitable
Fund, Tamara Morse, Mary Snapp and Spencer Frazer, Michael and Kaycee Krysty, Bonnie and Jim Towne, John and
Kathy Connors, Franz and Grace Lazarus, Carl and Renee Behnke, and Svanee’s Foundation for their generous lead
gifts. These funds will benefit our capital campaign to build a new 57,000-square-foot adoption center, primary care
teaching hospital, and animal shelter to replace our current aging facilities in Bellevue.
“A safe, efficient, and modern new facility will allow our organization to adopt out 3,000 more animals each year,
and spay and neuter 5,500 more pets each year to reduce pet homelessness,” said CEO David Loewe. “We are so
grateful for the support of our generous donors who have brought a long-awaited dream closer to reality.”
The new facility will also provide high-quality veterinary care for both Seattle Humane animals and outside rescue
organizations and shelters with limited resources. In an alliance with WSU’s College of Veterinary Medicine, fourthyear veterinary students will continue to do rotations at the shelter as part of their training. Their participation
expands Seattle Humane’s capacity to provide medical care to shelter pets.
Now that our campaign is public, stay tuned for more exciting changes to come! Seattle Humane plans to transform
the future of animal welfare, and that extends to our new look and feel, including a new logo, and a fun and
engaging advertising campaign to launch in early fall.
As an amazing finale to a record-breaking night, we let our fabulous shelter pets take the stage to strut their stuff
with local celebrities in our one-of-a-kind runway show. After the event, all 14 featured pets were adopted into loving
families! On behalf of every dog, cat and critter who comes through our doors, thank you to everyone who made
Tuxes & Tails such a special evening.

Greetings,
I want to take a moment to share an update with you. Eight years
ago my son and I adopted “Earl” from Seattle Humane. Each year I
donate in his name and send updates on how he’s doing.
This one is very special. My son left for Navy boot camp, and this
change has been hard on Earl and me. We’ve never been apart.
Earl is our hero, our companion, our…everything. I can’t tell you
how remarkable and smart this furry child of mine is. My son
always wears one of these undershirts and in honor of our Boy,
I made one for Earl. I wanted to share our story with you so that
you know that sometimes the animal you adopt out isn’t just a
“pet” but a full-fledged family member with special privileges and
more love than they ever imagined. We love our “Early butt” and
wouldn’t trade him for anything.

patience and is very gentle

Mallory doesn’t move first; she doesn’t want to disturb him. Though
Walden has two water bowls in the house just for him, he only drinks
water from Mallory’s water bowl.

Hello,
Stewart is actually the second pet we’ve adopted from Seattle Humane who
has become a beloved family member! My precious Camille was with us for
16 wonderful years. We adopted her as a puppy, and she brought us many
years of joy and companionship.
The week before Christmas my daughter Claire and I visited the adoption
center to see a few of the dogs we previewed online. Our house was a bit
divided – my oldest daughter wanted a dog, the younger one wanted a cat.
While we waited to meet the dogs, I told Claire to go in and pet the cats
and give them a little love. I watched her through the window as she sat on
the big plastic yellow couch and called to the cats. In just a few seconds, a
big orange tabby came to greet her. I watched him approach her and ask
for a little rub on the head. He got closer and then laid his head on her
lap. I had never seen anything like this. A minute later she looked up at me
and it didn’t take much to know from the sweet smile she gave me that he
was going home with us. It’s amazing for me to witness love at first sight,
especially since it had happened to me 18 years prior with Camille. At the
same place... Seattle Humane!
We are so grateful that Stewart and Claire found each other. The bonus for
my family is that he has brightened ALL of our lives. Stewart is so charming,
well-behaved, sensitive, and loving that he quickly won over my oldest
daughter who wanted a dog. I think this is also a testimony for adopting
older animals. Stewart is five years old and beyond gentle. I don’t know that
we would have gotten that experience from a kitten. I can’t express how
grateful we are. Thank you!

Dear Seattle Humane,
First of all, thank you so much for all you do to care for the
animals!
I wanted to update you on Ariel. She has adjusted SO well with us.
She was really good on the way home in the car, and when we got
home she sniffed everywhere and immediately laid down on the
floor next to my son and made herself at home. She is so gentle to
the kids, and more than anything VERY patient. Our kids named
her Ally.
Since she was doing so well, we took her to a doggy self-wash
place and although she was a bit nervous to be in a tub at first she
did just fine. Then we walked to Starbucks and sat outside while
having coffee, and she just sat by us and watched people walking
by. Everyone said they could tell she is such a special and amazing
dog and we agree!
I can’t describe how happy we are to be with her and I can tell she
trusts us 100 percent and is really happy to be part of our family.
We love her so much already, and I cannot thank you enough for
giving us the chance to adopt her. I think we were meant to be
together. I hope many dogs find their true match like Ariel (Ally)
did and I really think you all are amazing. Thank you!

I took both Paisley and Presley to Reber Ranch for their
customer appreciation day. They enjoyed the car ride and
shopping for goodies. The two of them have bonded. It took
about three days, but Presley is now becoming playful with
Paisley. They have turned the living room, dining room and
kitchen into a racetrack...and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Hi there,
We adopted Pandora (affectionately
known as Panda Bear) and Tennant
(the two furbabies to the right) from
Seattle Humane early summer 2014. My
husband and I recently got married, and
I was extremely homesick as I had just
moved across the country to Seattle from
Mississippi.
My husband had never had cats before
and wasn’t sure what he was getting
into! Ever since we traveled to Pandora’s
foster home and spent two hours falling
in love with her, these babies have quickly
transformed our house into a home.
Panda Bear loves to plop on the floor and roll everyday when we get home, sleep in-between
our legs at night, and chirp out the window at the ferocious birds and bugs. Tennant is quite the
masculine fellow and likes to pretend that he’s the “captain” of the house, but is actually a secret
softie who meows until his head is scratched to satisfaction. They just don’t really like it when
Mommy puts them in sweaters at Christmas time...
Seattle Humane – thank you for helping us find our two babies. Life really wouldn’t be the same
without them.

Happy Tails
Kat Goes from Shy to Social
At Seattle Humane, we have the ability to help save the lives of many more pets thanks to our
Life-Saver Rescue Program. By partnering with other shelters that lack space and resources, we
can give a second chance to pets in need. Plus those shelters have the capacity to take in even
more animals – doubling the life-saving capacity of our program. Kat, a 2-year-old Shepherd/
Labrador Retriever mix, was one of those lucky dogs who was transferred to Seattle Humane
from Eastern Washington.
Kat was originally found as a stray and brought to the nearest shelter. She was pregnant, and
the shelter didn’t have the resources to care for her and her unborn puppies. But thanks to
our Life-Saver Rescue Program, we brought Kat to Seattle Humane and gave her good food,
medical care, and time in a foster home for her to have and nurse her puppies. When Kat’s
puppies reached 8 weeks of age, they were all quickly adopted by loving families. Kat spent a
short amount of time in foster care after her puppies were adopted to gain more confidence.
It took her some time to realize the world wasn’t all big and scary. Soon after her stay in foster
care she was adopted and is now enjoying her new life as a cherished therapy pet. She quickly
blossomed into a very loving and devoted companion – her dad cannot imagine life without
her now!
Even though Kat and her puppies have their own homes now, they still make time for family
reunions! They plan to all meet up again for a reunion on the pups’ one-year birthdays.

He has touched many lives and Debby says he brings so much light to her
life as her constant companion.

Happy Tails
Lady Bug’s Amazing Recovery
This now-cherished pup came to Seattle Humane in dire straits. She was found injured on
the freeway and was rushed to the shelter by a Good Samaritan. Lady Bug had been hit
by a car and suffered severe head trauma. She was only a year old and needed emergency
life-saving action from Seattle Humane’s veterinary team.
When Lady Bug arrived, our staff veterinarian made pain control a top priority. Lady Bug
was sedated, and it would be a waiting game to see if she could recover. Our vet staff
worked round-the-clock to decrease the swelling in her brain. They coaxed her through
the trauma with continued pain control, syringe feedings and IV fluids.
After two weeks of critical care, Lady Bug regained her consciousness but was terrified.
Her experience left her fearful and not wanting to be touched. We knew that Lady Bug
was a sweet girl and needed the love of a family to overcome her trauma. She was cared
for in a volunteer foster home where she regained confidence and trust. Lady Bug was
soon frolicking with the resident cats and even showing interest in playing with the
family’s baby. Today, Lady Bug has a loving family of her own whom she adores… and
we’re told they’re pretty smitten with her, too!
Most shelters don’t have the resources to provide critical care for weeks on end, but at
Seattle Humane, we have the support of our community who helped us save Lady Bug’s
life. Thank you for being animal people, and together we’ll continue to be there for the
pets who need us.
Fawn is One Tough Kitty
Fawn, an 8-year-old tabby cat, was surrendered to Seattle Humane
when her family could no longer care for her. She had an infected
wound along her entire back from an apparent animal attack. This
encounter left her in pain and very sick. It was clear when Fawn
arrived that our veterinary team needed to act quickly to save her.
Our veterinary team surgically removed the infected tissue along
her back and used honey bandages to heal and shrink the wound
and to ward off further infection. After several months of applying
daily honey bandages, and three reconstructive surgeries later,
Fawn’s wound finally healed. Her recovery is a testament to the
dedication of our staff, volunteers and generous donors who work
so diligently to help each and every pet who comes through our
doors.
Fully recovered and feeling good as new, Fawn was quickly
adopted by a family of her own. She now lives a happy life as a
cherished indoor-only feline. This story is a good reminder that
cats are safest when kept indoors where they can look outside
from a cat tree and play with and “hunt” feather toys for
stimulation. Your cat can be just as happy inside and you’ll have
the peace of mind knowing they’re safe and healthy.

Preschool Pets
Bring your kids ages 4-5 for an hour of companion animal fun and
learning with Seattle Humane.

Humane Teen Club (HTC)
This club is for teens ages 13-17 interested in learning about
animal welfare and becoming volunteers at Seattle Humane before
they turn 18. The members are chosen in late summer and the
program runs throughout the school year from Oct.-June. HTC
meets two Saturdays each month and teens learn about Seattle
Humane and receive special training to prepare them to volunteer
at the shelter. Space is limited to 20 members based on the
strength of their application essays.

Kitty Literature
Children ages 5-10 can practice their reading skills with the
supportive, comforting audience of cats at Seattle Humane!
