What are the colleges?
• 31 mixed colleges, 7 graduate colleges, and 6
Permanent Private Halls
• Independent charities, each with a Head of House
and a Governing Body
• Founded between 1249 and 2008
• Some specialise and some cover a wide range of
subjects
• Between 9 students and 760
Colleges teach and research
• Colleges spent £138m on tuition and research in 2014
• College libraries accounted for £5.9m of this
• Colleges admit undergraduate students, have
responsibility for overseeing teaching and support of
undergraduates, and provide tutorial teaching
• College teaching is delivered by governing body
fellows and by external tutors including graduate
students
• Colleges support research fellows at early career
stage and a range of other research activities
Colleges provide facilities and
student welfare
• Colleges spent £167m on college residential
provision for students and others in 2014
• Colleges provide an extensive student welfare
support network, working with University
colleagues
• Colleges provide accommodation for
undergraduates and, increasingly, graduates
What is the purpose of
Conference of Colleges?
• Enables colleges to act collectively on issues that
matter to them: sharing information or good
practice, procuring advice or services
• Acts as a voice for college interests in the
University community: communicating the
collective college perspective and allowing active
participation in University decision-making

attend as observers at all main Conference
