FROM THE PRINCIPAL:
Welcome back for Term 3.
We welcome a number of new families to Riverside. One of our
new families are refugees from Afghanistan who have been living
in Iran. Many of you will be aware that just prior to moving into
the Riverside area their house was damaged by fire at the start of
the holidays. In conjunction with the Migrant Centre and local
churches we advertised for donations on our Facebook page.
Thank you everyone for your support. The family has what they
need at the moment but your generosity is appreciated.

This family does not have any English – how daunting it must be to
come to such a different environment but without the
understanding of our language. They speak Fasi and as part of their
culture the girls wear headscarves. Teachers have talked to their
classes about understanding this custom. The support of our
students has been amazing and through an interpreter the girls
have shared they feel ‘safe and comfortable’ at Riverside Primary
School.
There have been a number of staff changes.
Welcome back to Miss Donna Walkinshaw (Kinder AH) and Mrs
Naomi Calnan (support Monday, Tuesday).
New staff include:
 Mrs Rachelle Smith (Kinder MR)
 Miss Amelia Lethborg (4GW)
 Mrs Carmel McGee (1JD Monday – Thursday)
 Mrs Belinda Flack (social worker)
 Mrs Inga Clark (1JD Friday, library and support)
 Mrs Michaela Gregson (teacher assistant)
 Mrs Lanai Morrison (teacher assistant)
 Mr Ryan McCarthy (ICT trainee)
I am sure we have all been moved by the tragedy of the downing
of the passenger plane. Many of us travel in Australia and beyond
and the frightening consequences of this disaster will resonate with
all of us. Like many communities throughout Australia, our
thoughts are with the victim’s families and friends.
Congratulations on our well presented students, particularly the
effort you have made with the tunics for the girls – they look so
smart. I know this is going to be an excellent term. Attendance
is a big focus. If your child is away please ensure you contact the
office. We are cross referencing our mid year results with levels
of attendance. Remember – every day counts!
I would urge you to consider coming along to the RPSA meeting
this Monday – we are a big school, please don’t leave things for a
few.

Science Week “Feeding a Hungry World”
Prep Playground Makeover
Our school is celebrating Science week 4 August – 8 August!
Term 3 we will be…..
 Week 1 – Pea Growing WHOLE SCHOOL
How much can your pea grow in 3 weeks? (Enough for 3
trials per class). The science team will deliver a pack for
you to grow your pea and a grade based appropriate
experiment for you to run – no thinking required! We
need to have peas growing ASAP so they can be sprouting
for science week in week 3!
 Week 3 – Science experiments with buddy classes!
Mr Pearson will inform you of your class’s allocated time
on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday of this week. Joee
will assist your classes through the experiments focused all
around food!
There will be a session for parents to attend as well!
Thursday 2.20pm Week 3.
 Week 3 - Fruit Break Challenge – students will be
encouraged to bring fruit and classes will take a photo of
the best fruit frenzy photo during fruit break time. Each
class will be creative with their fruit eg. an arrangement of
fruit together, cut up in different ways. There will be a prize
for the winning class (fruit platter!). Please help out by
providing your child with fruit that week.
Over the last 12 months we have been discussing plans for the
Prep playground as part of the Outdoor Learning and Active
Play Areas Strategy.
After an initial quote well outside our price range and an
approach to the Uni, who have been supportive but
unfortunately nothing practical, committee member Karen
Clayton and her husband Benn offered to organise a working
bee with the support of our very clever groundsman, Graeme
Pickett.
On Sunday a team of dads worked on part of the playground
which has included levelling an area that will have artificial grass
and a storytelling circle (this has been made by Graeme).
A special thank you to Karen and Benn for their co-ordination,
including the sourcing of the tipper truck, bobcat and
evacuator supplied by Clayton Construction, Duncan Willis
and Midlands Plumbing.
And a special thank you to the team of dads who worked
tirelessly on the day: Tim West, Adam Gourlay, Mick Bowden,
Josh Sattler, Duncan Willis, Matthew Manzoney, Benn Clayton
and Graeme Pickett.
Part 2 is on Saturday – we hope for another fine day.
National Science Week is celebrated on 16 – 24 August following
from our RPS week of science!

From Ten Tips for Creating Resilient Families
Tip 9
Know how to argue
Families that work well know how to argue. It seems strange to say this because we all have the sense those families that work
well don’t have conflicts. The family is really where we learn to resolve disputes fairly. The way that parents teach children to
resolve differences of opinion with their brothers and sisters provides the basis for sharing, negotiating and problem solving in the
world beyond the family. While differences of opinion should be allowed to be expressed, children also need to learn that they
will not be able to win at all costs.
Tip 10 Parents are reliably unpredictable
With young children it is important to provide consistency and predictability. This allows them to feel sure of you. After a while
though, a bit of predictability can go a long way. To many children, most parents are about as predictable as a washing machine
cycle. It is important to have structure and consistency but it is also useful to act in ways that your children wouldn’t expect. This
keeps them interested in learning from you or least wondering what you are up to. Perhaps the most important feature of parents
in healthy families is that they realise that all of the above is desirable but not always possible and so they look at how to promote
good functioning while not wasting energy on blaming themselves for the times when things don’t quite work out as they had
planned.
