WICKED WRITERS
Welcome to this term’s Wicked Writers’ Magazine. We hope you enjoy reading
the fantastic pieces of writing produced by our BVS pupils.
Year 5 used Alfred Noyes’ poem, The Highway Man, for inspiration for their stories:
THE HIGHWAY MAN
by
Oliver Smith 5FJ
‘Pitter patter, pitter patter.’ The steps echoed through the cold, dark night. The ghostly
moon was a luminous torch lighting the inscrutable sky. Occasionally, a lone wolf howled
breaking the absolute silence of the night.
Suddenly, a wooden building appeared on the dim horizon. Past the dancing fire-flies, past
the dainty purple haze, lay the ancient inn. Surprisingly, the remote inn which was usually a
bustling hive of activity was as quiet as a grave. It was like a building in a ghost town. I was curious.
Silently, I checked my glistening hoard of gold when … ‘BANG!’ The sudden gunshot shattered the inscrutable silence filling me with fear. The echo of the explosion consumed all
other sounds until it halted as suddenly as it had begun.
I found myself fleeing, galloping to the lightening west, too afraid to look back. As soon as I
had overcome my irrational fear I headed back to the inn. Ordering my ale I overheard
some dreadful news: Beautiful Bess had been used as bait, tied to her bed and then murdered by the vile, savage Red-Coats (King George’s men).
Fuming, I sprinted madly to my heroic horse, muttering and trying to convince myself that
my beloved Bess had not been annihilated. However, deep down I knew the truth. I tracked
the murderers through gigantic fields and mountainous mountains until finally I caught sight
of them. An immense rage bubbled to fill my brain.
I charged at them with all the strength and courage that I could muster. They turned and I
was shot. Red, hot blood spilled from my wound. I knew that it was fatal. Slowly, I dropped
from my horse and struck the rock hard ground.
Rarely, I wander the highway, but when the moon shines a luminous glow and the moor is
concealed by a purple haze, my ghost rides to the remote inn. I slow to a crawl and I tap so
lightly on the shutters like a moth hitting glass and then I whistle a hypnotic tune to the beautiful Bess waiting there ...
BESS’ TALE
by
Charlotte Clarke 5KG
Tragically, I watched my beloved, the dashing Highwayman, gallop away on his ebony,
black horse. Against the purple moor his velvet coat stood out like a splash of blood. His
rapier-hilt twinkling, he waved a final farewell. I peered at the horizon, the casement groaning in the wind, just in time to see the dark figure of my beloved, silhouetted in the glistening moonlight. I remembered his last words: ‘If I do not come by noon, then watch for me
by moonlight.’ Quietly I whispered, ‘I will.’
Forever it seemed I waited until the crack of dawn, until my father’s inn was full of drunken
men. Finally, when the sun was setting with an explosion of reds, pinks and oranges, King
George’s men came marching, kicking the door open with a thud. My heart filled with terror. They said no word to me at all.
The silence was deafening. The soldiers rose from their stools. With sniggers on their vile
faces they moved towards me. I clawed, I struggled, I kicked, I punched, but it was to no
use. My eyes overflowed with an ocean of tears as they bound and gagged me. They tied a
musket to me with the muzzle pointed at my breast! My screams were wasted only I could
hear them deep in my head.
I writhed my hands behind me until they were bleeding freely. I was drowning in my own
tears that were now streaming down my face. Suddenly, all the blood and tears paid off as
the tip of one of my fingers delicately touched the trigger of the musket. I felt empowered …
We waited for hours. My father stood helplessly, trapped. On the stroke of midnight I
heard the noise of horses hooves. I saw him and as he saw me I’m
sure he smiled. I took one shaky breath, glanced at my true love
for the last time and … ‘BANG!’
It was done. I had warned him with my death.
Still, on a winter’s night, when the moon is a shimmering, shining
ball, I wait for my love, my Highwayman.

WALKING THROUGH OUR ENVIRONMENTAL
AREA
by
Abigail Phillips 6LV
As it was a beautiful warm day I hiked down the steep, stubbly, bark steps. Razor
sharp thorns, as pointed as sharks teeth, scratched against my pale face. Popcorn
blossom shimmers in the bright sun. Oh how I wish I could reach it!
A long, narrow path curves around into a vanishing point. What could be around
the next corner? Caterpillar-like flowers hang calmly above the saddle-brown
ground. Orange brown mushrooms look like miniature parasols. Narrow green
dancing reeds swaying from side to side move in the swirling breeze. I take a
deep breath and walk on ...
Year 5 have been writing poems about fruit, particularly apples:

Year 5 have been explaining how animals came into being:
LIFE EXPLAINED
by
Adrian Stainthorpe 5KG
Burning brightly as a star, Earth was scorching. Suddenly, a crisp cold comet was blasting
towards our planet. KA-BOOM! The comet collided and turned Earth into a polar landscape. But inside the comet a kangaroo was sleeping…
During the crash Kanga awoke and then she wearily yawned and started to jump. Slowly,
the ice cracked, and even more slowly it melted. Fresh rivers began to form. Suddenly,
strange sparkling objects appeared in the jet black sky and Kanga took shelter by diving
into the nearest lake.
Meanwhile, minute seeds fell whilst a raging asteroid shower raged. Finally it stopped and
it began to rain.
After one long monotonous year, the fruit was finally ripe and scrumptious to eat. A
dainty fruit fell on to the dusty, scorching deserted floor. Next, Kanga awoke and saw a
wonderful sight. Fresh water streams gleamed and sparkled in the flowing sun whilst glorious green grass bursting with colourful, bright flowers and tremendous trees created an inscrutable forest.
But the best surprise for Kanga was that he saw the fabulous fruit had all turned into ...
ANIMALS.
HOW THE LION BECAME
by
Devan Cusack 5KG
In the mystery of space something happened. No-one knows how or why, but it happened. The Sun, red with rage, had a huge hole because the cold selfish Moon had spun
into it. While this happened, a glowing figure flew out of the crash and zoomed towards
planet Earth.
When it landed on planet Earth, its burgundy mane shot back as if it was being dried
with a hairdryer. A mighty roar hit the Earth. In the blinding light a male lion licked his
paw with his strong, rough tongue. He jumped around planet Earth, roaring all the way.
Once he returned back to his position, Earth filled with grass, plants, rainforests and animals.
The lion pounced on a grey, juicy wombat and sunk his teeth in. After his meal, he felt
lonely. He went to look for a friend but they all ignored him. So he went to sleep and
started to dream. He dreamt that he had mated and had cubs. A few hours later, the lion
woke up with a terrible headache. So he went for a walk and noticed that a little group of
flowers were shrivelled up. The lion wondered what on earth was going on.
The next day the lion felt really ill. He was slowing passing away and strangely enough
the Earth was suffering as well! Every animal tried to cure him (except the wombat) and
nothing happened. If the lion wanted to be cured, he had to pick a wife. All the lionesses
came to see him. Lion picked a lovely silky, shiny and beautiful lioness, and finally lion
was cured. A couple of days later, they had cubs on a land called Africa and now they’re
living there, rolling and playing, forever and ever and ever.
THE COMET
by
Jordan Adam 5KG
It was coming. No-one knows, not even the Earth. Very, very slowly the comet comes. It
will change Earth. It will change the Universe. It passes all the shining stars. It passes the
burning sun. It passes Mercury and Venus. For this is no ordinary comet. This is the
Comet of Life.
Down it came through the atmosphere to hit the ground with great impact. The Earth was a
wasteland with no habitable land, no trees, no animals. Out of the comet leapt a herd of
beautiful Addaxes. These Addaxes were full of life and kindness and they were about to
change Earth forever.
The Addaxes had a leader; he was the kindest creature that ever had lived. “We must create another life living planet – remember, god sent us,” ordered the leader Addax as her
anxious supporters started pouncing in her direction. Suddenly, a tree popped up, then a
plant, then a zebra. Animals appeared from everywhere. Huge, juicy bananas and creamy
coconuts and tender tomatoes sprouted.
A big feast took place on a hot warm night to celebrate the New World. The monkeys
leapt from tree to tree, the great wolves howled as loud as they could. However, as they all
partied, out of the Mount Merapp volcano came an enormous number of lions and tigers.
Their one ambition was to take over the jungle.
“Roar!” The mighty roar frightened the animals as they started eating the fruits. They knew
their days were numbered!
EARTH
by
Oliver Smith 5JF
During the first days of Earth, it was just a plain, boring, spherical boulder drifting through
the shadows and endlessly wishing for life.
The Earth wished for life and to shine just like the other amazing stars. Hopeful, and also
monotonously dreaming, the Earth kept on imagining the hallucination of life.
Suddenly, a strange star appeared in the inscrutable, jet-black sky. It looked like every other
star across the vastness of night. But it was faintly different because of its colour. It was
blinding white rather than burning yellow! As time went on, this strange anomaly grew larger and larger, as if it was swelling or speeding towards Earth …
Our first piece of Big Writing this term involved composing a Newspaper Article about Unidentified Flying Objects appearing in the skies above BVS!
BRADWELL VILLAGE SCHOOL STUNNED BY UFO SIGHTING
by
Jack Marner 5FJ
On Monday at 9.30am the children at BVS were stunned by a strange flying saucer
hovering over the playground. Mr Cliff Stevens was trying to fix a computer when suddenly he saw a glowing object in the sky. He said he had never seen anything like it,
‘’I could just about see their long golden tentacles hanging outside the UFO. I was flabbergasted!’’
Mr Dunkley, a year six teacher, explained, “I was just about to give out homework
when a child in my class saw a shining golden light.”
People were saying it could be an aeroplane or a hot air balloon, but the teachers disagreed. Whatever was hovering in the sky above Bradwell is obviously going to remain
a mystery!
UFO FLYING OVER BVS
by
Afifa Ali 5FJ
One morning at 9:30, Mrs Kennington, the Headteacher of the school, was doing
some paperwork. As she gazed out of the window, something caught her eye.
There was a UFO flying over the school field and the children were all standing on the
playground staring up at it.
Mrs Kennington couldn’t believe her eyes; she rushed out of her office and into the
freezing cold weather. When she arrived at the school field she looked up at the sky.
There was a gigantic UFO behind the clouds.
It had shimmering lights that were twinkling. But no one could see it properly because
of the lights. Behind the thick clouds, a long, purple, slimy tentacle came out.
It was very cold outside, so Mrs Kennington said, “Come on children, go inside and do
your work.” The staff and children had never seen anything like that before. Mrs Kennington returned to her office wondering whether the thing would go or stay….
UFO SEEN OVER BRADWELL
by
Chantel Serevena 5FJ
A UFO was reported hovering over the BVS school field this morning just after
9:30am. The UFO was seen by two hundred children and the thirteen teachers.
Mrs Kennington came outside and wondered why all the children were not inside doing their work.
Mr Paul Dunkley said, “It was really weird how all of a sudden this thing just
came into the sky out of the blue!”
Mrs Kennington stated, “It might have been an aeroplane, a lantern from the local park at Heelands or a hot air balloon.”
The UFO stayed hovering over the field for about half an hour, when suddenly
one of the school children shouted, “LOOK!”. Everyone was totally flabbergasted when they saw five flashing lights disappearing into the distance.
UFO HITS BVS
by
Elle Buckledee 5FJ
Last Monday afternoon children from Bradwell Village School were playing on
the school field when suddenly, flying at a supersonic speed, several unidentified
flying objects appeared in the sky!
Mr Cliff Stevens, the site manager, said, “I was in the ICT suite when I noticed
something happening on the playground. I went outside to see what it was. Just
as I got there one of the UFOs just skimmed my head. It was chaotic!”
Miss James stated, “Yes, it’s true, there were flying spacecraft. They had flashing
lights like disco, silver blades, as white as crystal.’’
When Milton Keynes Council came to investigate, they could find no evidence
of UFOs. This is a total mystery!
UFO CAUSES LOCAL SCHOOL TO COME TO A
STANDSTILL
by
Rachel Plose 4KL
Over the field at Bradwell Village School something mysterious happened when
yellow spheres hovered overhead at 9:30 last Monday morning. Sia Sellu, a pupil
at the school, told us, “It was really weird, like the sun had multiplied itself.”
Mr Cliff Stevens captured some of these mysterious objects with his camera. He
reported, “As I was mending a broken computer, out of the corner of my eye I
saw an orange sphere hover outside the window. At first, I thought I was seeing
things, but then I looked closer and saw they were moving swiftly across the playground.”
Marlie Edwards added to this, “I was playing with Katie
and Rachel when I saw an orange flying ball. Rachel told
me there are no such things as UFOs. Katie said it might
be a hot air balloon.” A member of the Milton Keynes
Council stated that the children and staff had imagined
the whole incident.
Mrs Kennington, the Headteacher, thinks differently.
“Whatever it is, UFO or not, it still remains a mystery.”
UFO VISITS BVS
by
Luke Wood 4KL
Yesterday afternoon a UFO was seen hovering over, and landing at, Bradwell
Village School in Milton Keynes. Scientists are puzzled and have stated that they
have never seen anything like this before. They have issued a warning for all people to stay away from the site.
Mrs Kennington, the Headteacher of the school, said, ‘‘We have no idea what it
is. It may be an alien spy plane!’’
Mr Stevens, the BVS Site Manager, reported seeing the craft falling from the sky
into the BVS Environmental Area. ‘‘It was an amazing sight to see. There is a
massive crater and the ground is blackened.’’
We are waiting for the Government to check their confidential files to see if
there have been any other similar incidents.
Year 3 children have been using descriptive writing to empathise with a character:
THE CAVE
by
Jack Bouffler 3HR
Once, there was a little girl who lived in a cave above lots of mountains in the wilderness. Sometimes the little brown dog could hear wolves howling above the
whistle of the wind and tiny rocks falling onto the grave. Sometimes the girl
called out for anyone else who lived in the wilderness. No one came.
THE CAVE
by
Morgan Brown 3HR
The little girl lived in a dark, damp, disgusting cave. She looked out onto the horizon with a tear trickling down her grubby cheek. Then her dog (who stank very
badly) vaulted into her gloomy cave. Her dog snuggled into her lap like a hot water bottle. She stared at the large pointed mountains that blocked out her view of
the wide world. She slowly got up scraping her foot on one of the solid sharp
stones. She slid down the hard rocky mountain and walked down the jagged,
spiky, stone path. When she reached the rapid river a trout swiftly swam away.
She put her hand in the vast and fast river and pulled out a couple of fish. Again
she looked into the dark, red and orange sky before she walked on through the
vast river.

JAMIE AND THE FOSSIL
by
Jake Moseley 4KL
One day a Scottish lad called Jamie was in his small croft with his mum. It was the summer
holidays and he was bored to the bone because all his friends had gone to summer camp
for the holidays. So he started a collection of things he had found on the beach.
It was an ordinary day and as usual Jamie was looking for shells and interesting rocks. He
was walking across the stones when he saw something glinting on a colossal rock. He ran
and picked it up. It was a fossil! He blinked and saw an image of a Triceratops. The image
grunted and with a puff of smoke it disappeared.
Quickly but quietly Jamie ran to the nearest museum to see what his fossil was. He asked to
speak to the manager but he wasn’t available so spoke to one of the trainees.
The trainee said “That’s a Triceratops fossil, it’s cursed, put it back.”
“No!” Jamie bellowed and he ran back to the croft and he put it on his collectors table in
his bedroom.
That night Jamie looked at his fossil for a long time. After a few hours he fell asleep and
dreamt about a Triceratops charging into his croft. Then he awoke and found out it was all
a dream.
At school that day he could not stop thinking about his fossil and told his friends about it.
They tried to convince him to put it back but he was not persuaded! When he went back
home he fell straight asleep but he had a worse dream about the Triceratops who had
trapped his Mum. Jamie was now persuaded to put the fossil back.
That morning Jamie’s Mum was not downstairs or anywhere for that matter! So he went
back to the beach and returned the fossil to its rightful place and hoped that his mum
would be back at home. Then, he saw another image of a triceratops but this time it was
smiling!
He ran back to his croft and his mum was back where she belonged. Jamie went back to
the beach and looked for some other things. He found the most beautiful shell. “You’re a
beauty!” he shouted …
