Minutes From April 24, 2014
Terri Navrkal called the LSPRTA meeting for April
24, 2014, to order at 11:30. She recognized today’s
greeters: Catherine Guerrero Rodriguez, Jeanette Hardin, and
Jackie Kennedy before asking everyone to note the list of departed colleagues in the Newsletter and explaining that our
former secretary Betty Smith is present and not the one listed
as deceased. Terrie Bennett gave the prayer followed by the
pledges to the American flag and the Texas flag led by Lynn
Stigler. President Navrkal welcomed all visitors and asked
each person who brought a guest to introduce him or her.
Then she recognized all people with April birthdays and presented each with a gift.
After the meal was served, the LSPRTA Scholarship
Committee Shirley Taylor, Claire Seale, and Chairman Marilyn
Murfee introduced Savannah Renfro and Kendall Watson, the
2014-2015 Scholarship recipients. Savannah, a graduate of
Whiteface High School, attends LCU pursuing an Early Childhood through sixth grade major. Kendall, a graduate of Fort
Worth Castleberry High School, is a multi-disciplinary student
at Texas Tech, seeking certification in Early Childhood through
sixth grade and Special Education K-12. Both girls plan to
graduate in May 2015.
Terri introduced Joey Wyatt of Texas Mobile Imaging
to present the program “Becoming Stroke Smart.” Joey, a former health teacher and a TRS-endorsed speaker, travels to
various districts to inform people about strokes and to do
stroke screenings. He said that 75 to 80% of strokes can be
prevented if people know the symptoms. He discussed the
different types of strokes, the causes, and the means of prevention. Joey explained that there is a three-hour window to
prevent permanent damage if one gets medical help within
that time. He explained what one should do if a person has
symptoms of a stroke or a heart attack. For a heart attack, call
911 immediately, be sure door is unlocked, chew an aspirin,
and stay upright. For a stroke, remember FAST. Face: Smile
and check if one side of face droops; Arms: After raising both
arms, check to see if one arm drifts downward; Speech: Say
a simple phrase to see if speech is slurred or strange; Time:
Call 911 if there is any symptom and remember the threehour window of opportunity. Barbara Abbe shared a handout
explaining FAST and encouraged everyone to keep the card in
his or her wallet. In closing, Joey answered questions and
urged everyone to sign up today for the vascular scans, organ
ultrasounds, and bone density test for a reduced price of $115
on May 6, and 7 at LISD Central Office.
Terri called the business meeting to order at 12:45.
The Minutes and the Treasurer’s Report for March were approved and filed as presented in the Newsletter.
Lynn Haley discussed the TRTA Diamond Plus Program for LSPTRA membership. She explained in detail the
payment options and the step-by-step procedure for enrolling.
Lynn presented a door prize to Becky Hamilton for having
taught in another country and to Dennis Hargrove for having
the most pets.
Richard Umstot recognized Mary Sexton and thanked
her for all her hard work as she is completing four years as

District XVII President.
Dennis Hargrove announced that all officers and committee chairmen who did not attend
the state convention should attend the training
session on May 8th, conducted by continued…
Mary Sexton before she leaves for France.
Glenna Burns reminded everyone to get a
Voter’s Guide from the media table and to be sure
to vote wisely.
Terri announced that John Robison of
KCBD will replace Cary Allen as our program next
month and that Cary has re-scheduled for February 2015.

I have had such a happy and fun time this year as your
president! I hope you have too! I tried to “tailor” the
meetings to my personality. I felt strongly about involving as many officers and members in the meetings
as I could. I wanted each of you to enjoy the meetings
and be entertained each time you came, and I wanted
to increase our membership. I felt like I did those
things. Your words of kindness, appreciation, prayer,
and praise you shared with me this year mean more
than you can imagine.
I look forward to the 2014-2015 year. I hope to continue to increase membership, plan programs and meetings that are entertaining and beneficial to you, and
assist LSPRTA and TRTA in being a “loud and clear”
voice so that our senators and representatives hear
our urgent concerns regarding the TRS-Care.
Congratulations to a great group of leaders you have
elected for next year. They are: Eric McKnight and
Linda Rowntree, Co-1st VPs (membership); Lynn
Haley and Rebecca Snider, Co-2nd VPs (public relations); Josie Delagarza, secretary; and Richard
Ybarra, treasurer. We stand ready to serve you!
Sincerely,
Terri Navrkal
And a very special thank you to . .
