Thank you for volunteering! We have lots of important information that we hope will help make this the best Barber Beast on the Bay ever! Remember—your most important job is to have fun and cheer on the participants! It is important to check in at least 1 hour before your scheduled shift. We have a change in our check-in process that we hope will help you get to your location quicker: All volunteers who are working on the course should check in at the tent located inside the overflow parking lot on the east side of Peninsula Drive (just below the Tom Ridge Center). This will enable you to check in and pick up All volunteers who are working at Waldameer should report to the Volunteer Check In pavilion at Waldameer. XS Energy Great tasting drink! 3 4 Bag Drop Participants will drop off bags on their way to the start line. A tag will be found in participant packets which should be attached to personal belongings. A recorder will check the bags in while the volunteer will place the bags in a designated area. At the end of the race recorders will track the return of bags to appropriate participants while other volunteers will locate bags and return to participant. Beer Sales Beer will be for sale at the After Party at Waldameer Park for $3.00 for participants, volunteers and spectators. A ticket will be issued for each purchase to be redeemed at the beer trailer. Volunteers will check ID to be sure birthday is before September 12, 1994 and issue a beer band. Participants and volunteers over the age of 21 are entitled to one free beer (a can for participants and draft for volunteers. ) Once that beer has been redeemed, use a sharpie to mark their hand. Volunteers must have their volunteer t-shirt on (blue or green) and present ID. Additional beers must be purchased. Beer Pouring Volunteers for pouring must be TIPs (Training for Intervention Procedures) trained and have already been identified by BNI staff. Volunteers must check for a beer band, collect ticket and pour beer. Finish Line Volunteers will distribute water, food and medals to the participant as they cross the finish line. Volunteers will set up the tables, replenish food tables and keep medals ready for distribution. Volunteers must keep the “chute” open-encourage participants to make quick selections of food or water and keep moving. Volunteers should clean-up the area at the end of their shift. The Saint Vincent Mobile Medical Unit will be adjacent to the Finish Line should anyone need assistance. If a participant cannot make it to the unit please go to the unit for assistance. Most importantly, volunteers should be cheering for participants after a 10 mile extreme obstacle course! 5 Parking Volunteers will be responsible for directing the flow of traffic in the Waldameer parking lot Parking for the Adapted Course will be close to the entrance to the park and adjacent to the finish line. All others will be directed away from this area. Please follow the direction of the Parking Captain closely to avoid any miscommunication and accidents. Shuttle buses will be moving through this area as well. Those lanes must be kept open for bus use. Pre-Registered Participants Participants over 21 will be issued a wrist band for beer. All participants will need their race number on their arm or forehead. Check to be sure bibs are secured to each participant.. Direct participants to Bag Drop. Volunteers should be friendly and willing to answer any questions participants may have. Lost or forgotten timing chips-a new chip can be issued to participants for a $10 fee (credit or cash only). Day-Of Registration You will welcome participants who have not yet registered, provide them with the necessary paperwork and collect their payment. Cash or credit. No checks. Participants over 21 will be issued a wrist band for beer. All participants will need their race number on their arm or forehead. Direct participants to Bag Drop. Volunteers should be friendly and willing to answer any questions participants may have. Shuttle Guide Shuttle guides will welcome participants (7:15-10:00am) and spectators (beginning at 10:00am) to the shuttle and make riders aware of shuttle stops and schedule. Guides should be friendly and able to answer any questions. Many of our participants are not familiar with the State Park or may be visiting Erie for the first time…don’t be afraid to talk up our home town! We will provide maps of the Park and the course on each bus should a question come up. At the end of your shift please do a walk through and remove all trash. Final shift should remove signage/decorations. 6 Hydration Stations Supplies included in each container: garbage bags, 8 oz. cups, and a pitcher. Prepare cups and have them lined up and ready for participants. As they come by, stand away from the table and hand/offer water to participants. Someone should be standing just beyond table with a pitcher full of water offering refills. Don’t be afraid to talk to participants, “Water?” “Refill?” “Keep going!” “Almost there!” Keep area picked up. Extra garbage bags are provided for trash. Trash should be tied up and placed in nearest dumpster . Nutrition Stations Supplies include: foil pans for slicing, plastic knives, gloves, 3 oz. cups, garbage bags. Slice bananas and cereal bars into bite sized pieces and place in cups. Keep cups lined up on table. Some volunteers can slice while others stand in front of table, handing off cups to participants as they go by. Don’t be afraid to talk to participants, “Refill?” “Keep going!” “Almost there!” Keep area picked up. Extra garbage bags are provided for trash. Trash should be tied up and placed in nearest dumpster. Obstacle Monitors Be present near each obstacle to maintain safety. Position your team on all sides of the obstacle. Direct participants on how to complete each obstacle, “go over and under” or “you need to crawl through the tubes to the other side”. Check your assigned obstacle to be sure it is in good working order. If you notice something wrong find your zone captain (green shirts) or flag down someone from MGM construction (orange shirts) and direct participants around the obstacle in the meantime. You must make sure that participants in the elite wave (8:30) do every obstacle. One person at each obstacle will have a clip board. If anyone in the Elite wave fails to complete an obstacle record their bib number. Their bibs will be labeled “E” for Elite. Clip boards should be returned to Zone Captains by 10am. If someone is injured, contact your captain. Ice packs and Band-Aids are available at all Hydration Stations. Cheer participants on! *Traffic Control-You may be asked to help participants cross the road. Volunteers will be given an orange vest and flagging. Road cross overs happen after Obstacle 8 (Zone C) and after Obstacle 10 (Zone C). There are other areas where participants will be utilizing the road on the course as well. Please help participants and cars be aware of each other. 7 Start Line- Located at Beach 11, the Start Line is where it all begins! You will assist in directing participants to the "chute" at their appropriate wave time. Encourage participants to move from shuttle drop off area to start line. While participants await the "go" signal, pump them up and cheer them on. When the DJ begins to count down to the start time, drop flagging at the appropriate time and hold up after wave goes through. You will repeat the process for each wave during your shift. No bibs or timing chips will be available at the Start Line. Participants cannot run without a bib and must return to Waldameer for a replacement. If a timed participant is missing their chip they are still able to participate but will not be timed and no refund will be issued for their lost/ forgotten chip. Volunteers will also be asked to pick up all trash from the area before they leave. Volunteer Check-in Waldameer Over Flow Lot-You will welcome volunteers reporting to Presque Isle State Park (Obstacle Monitors, Hydration/Nutrition volunteers, Start Line). At the Waldameer check in, welcome those who are registration, bag check, finish line, parking and shuttle guides Provide volunteers with their name tag, job description, shirt if necessary and assignment location. A bottle of water and a snack should be offered to volunteers. Volunteers in this position will need to trouble shoot for no shows, answer questions and be able to be a resource to anyone with questions or concerns. Here are driving directions to reach assigned areas on the course: Obstacle 1- One Bell of a Start—Zone A Travel on Peninsula Drive around the park. You will pass Perry Monument as well as the Canoe and Boat rentals. Turn right into Beach 11/ Coast Guard Station and then take another right and follow the road. You will pass boat houses on your right. Keep going and park along the North Pier. Obstacle will be on the other side of the bath house. Obstacle 2- Creepy Crawl—Zone A Travel on Peninsula Drive around the park. You will pass Perry Monument as well as the Canoe and Boat rentals. Turn right into Beach 11/ Coast Guard Station parking lot. Park in the lot, and report to the Beach where your obstacle will be located. Obstacle 3- Mucked Up—Zone A Unfortunately there isn’t an easier way to get to this obstacle so you will have to loop around Presque Isle State Park. Travel on Peninsula Drive around the park. You will pass Perry Monument as well as Beach 11/ Coast Guard Station. You will turn right and enter into Beach 10 Budny Beach parking lot where you will park. You will have to walk to your obstacle, so you will have to head back onto the main road and turn left to get to your obstacle. Obstacle 4- Scale the Beast and Obstacle 5- Can’t Sand It — Zone B Unfortunately there isn’t an easier way to get to this obstacle so you will have to loop around Presque Isle State Park. Travel on Peninsula Drive around the park. You will pass Perry Monument as well as Beach 11/ Coast Guard Station. You will turn right and enter into Beach 10 Budny Beach parking lot. You will turn right again and follow the road. Park in the lot and continue onto the beach where you will find your obstacles. 9 Obstacle 6- Solider On—Zone B Unfortunately there isn’t an easier way to get to this obstacle so you will have to loop around Presque Isle State Park. Travel on Peninsula Drive around the park. You will pass Perry Monument as well as Beach 11/ Coast Guard Station and Beach 10 Budny Beach. You will see signs on the left side of the road directing you to Sunset Point. Park on the right hand side of the road and continue onto the beach for your obstacle. Obstacle 7- Spider Snare—Zone B and Obstacle 8- Pipe Down—Zone C Travel on Peninsula Drive into Presque Isle State Park and continue until you see signs for the Lighthouse and Millroad Beaches. Turn Left and then turn right at another sign for the Lighthouse and Millroad Beaches and travel past the Lighthouse. Go a little way and park in front of the picnic tables where you will see Beast Signage for Obstacles. Walk to the end of the road to the Beach 9 Bathhouse. Travel until you see your obstacle. Obstacle 9- Entrapment and Obstacle 10- Quarter Pipe, Half Done — Zone C Travel on Peninsula Drive into Presque Isle State Park and continue until you see signs for Lighthouse and Millroad Beaches. Turn left and then turn right at another sign for the Lighthouse and Millroad Beaches. Directly across from the Sawmill sign turn right at the bathhouse. The road will say, “No Outlet” but follow this road into the Maintenance Area. Park here and find your obstacle ahead. Obstacle 11- Quarter Pipe, All Done and Obstacle 12- Pipe Out, Wipe Out and Obstacle 13- Hurdles from Hell — Zone C Travel on Peninsula Drive into Presque Isle State Park and continue until you see signs for the Lighthouse and Millroad Beaches. Turn Left and then take another left at another sign for the Lighthouse and Millroad Beaches. Park along the beach to get to your obstacle. 10 Obstacle 14- Monkey Around and Obstacle 15- Hitting the Wall — Zone D Travel on Peninsula Drive into Presque Isle State Park. You will pass the Ranger Station and the Rotary Pavilion/Beach 7/ Water Works. Soon after look for the sign for Beach 8/Pettinato Beach. Turn left and then turn right into Beach 8/Pettinato Beach. Park in the parking lot and continue to the beach; obstacles will be on the beach off to the right. Obstacle 16 – Trench Warfare—Zone D Travel on Peninsula Drive into Presque Isle State Park. Pass the Ranger Station and follow signs for Rotary Pavilion/Water Works/Beach 7. Turn left and head straight back to the beach. Turn left at the Stop sign, past the big rock. Find parking in the parking lot and continue to the beach where your obstacle will be located. Obstacle 17 – Back of the Beast—Zone D Travel on Peninsula Drive into Presque Isle State Park. Travel on road until you come to signs for Beach 6/ Volleyball Courts. Turn left across from the Ranger Station and head straight back towards the beach. Park in the parking lot and continue to the beach where your obstacle will be located. Obstacle 18- Avenging Angles and Obstacle 19- Get Loco and Obstacle 20- Mogul Mania—Zone E Travel on Peninsula Drive into Presque Isle State Park. Take a left hand turn at the Stull Interpretive Center/ Barracks Beach. Park in the Stull Center parking lot or on the beach side to reach your obstacles. 11 Obstacle 21- Kneivel Launch and Obstacle 22- Scale Up the Beast and Obstacle 23- Get Set—Get Wet — Zone F Travel on Peninsula Drive into Presque Isle State Park. If space permits you can park in the Beach 1 parking lot. There will be another 5K race going on that morning so parking around this area might be limited. If parking is unavailable there are parking lots on Peninsula Drive you can utilize. From Beach 1 head onto the beach to find your obstacles. Obstacle 24- Heartbreak Hill—Zone F Travel on Peninsula Drive and turn right at the bottom of the hill. Park in any of the lots on the right side of the road. Walk across the street to report to your obstacle. Obstacle 25- Beast Backbreaker and Obstacle 26- Wave Goodbye — Zone F Travel on Peninsula Drive and turn left into Waldameer Park, across from the Tom Ridge Environmental Center.
