Weather Awning Installation Instructions
(see Reverse for drawing)
The weather awing you have purchased as an accessory to your Extendobed takes just
a few minutes to install and provides both sun and rain protection. Attach the awning
rail to the top back of the vehicle or camper shell by use of “butterfly” rivets that are
included with your package (they are in a plastic bag with your awning tarp). The
awning rail will be pre-cut for most installations. It should be 51" for most camper shells
and pickups, and 48" for most for SUVs. If your awning rail needs to be shorter for your
application, after cutting rail, file cut edges to protect against tearing awning when
inserting into rail. To install awing rail, drilled five 1/8" (can use up to 5/32" drill bit)
diameter holes at quarter points in rail. Locate the awning rail across the back of the
vehicle on a smooth surface with the rope slot to the rear of the vehicle and drill center
hole. Drill and set other rivets. The “butterfly” rivets will expand and hold very well in
fiber glass. If a second metal layer is encountered under metal surface of SUVs or vans,
more than ¼” below surface, do not drill through it. Simply place rivet in hole and began
to pull. Rivet will draw down and expand between surfaces. Using a rivet gun, set the
rivets until the pins pop. If desired to insure a weather seal, a dab of silicon caulk
can be placed under the awning rail at drill points or over set rivets. (See lower left
photo detail.) After the awning rail is installed, the weather awning is ready to set up.
Run roped end of the awning tarp (rope sewn in) through the awning rail and lay the
awning tarp out over the Extendobed. Place the two pole stirrups on the upper or lower
rail of the Extendobed platform usually about 16" from end. Place a rivet or bolt in front
of stirrup to prevent it from moving forward under load if there is not a natural stop on
the unit. The expandable rod goes through the outer end of the tarp and fits into the tarp
pockets on either side. Snap ties around pole. The tent poles are placed in the stirrups,
and the pole points into the tarp grommets. Extend the poles until the tarp is taunt. Rope
ties (included) are secured over the top of the tent poles and tied to the Extendobed
lower frame to secure the tarp in place. Two bungee cords are included to tie the edges
of the tarp on either side of the vehicle to the wheel wells.
