NEWS AND INSIGHT FOR FRIENDS OF MUTUAL SAVINGS BANK
FALL 2016
Employee community involvement
Mutual Moments
Mutual Savings Bank employees are actively involved in the
community by serving as board members for many organizations.
Our employees volunteer their free time, including nights and
weekends, to a greater cause. From the Boys & Girls Club of
Franklin to the United Way of Johnson County, Mutual Savings
Bank employees immerse themselves in community involvement
to serve a greater purpose in life beyond the workweek.
Mutual Savings Bank would like to recognize our employees’ board
involvement in the community:
• Amanda Hendershot – Beats for Bristol.
Beats for Bristol works to ease the anxiety
of expectant mothers, especially those who
have experienced a prenatal loss or highrisk pregnancy. Beats provides free fetal
doppler rentals as well as other support to
pregnant women across the United States.
The local organization for which Amanda
volunteers hosts an annual “Touch a Truck”
event in Franklin.
• Kim Henderson – Franklin Chamber of
Commerce. Kim works with the Franklin
Chamber of Commerce to further its efforts
to advance the economic growth and quality
of life within the Franklin community.
• Rob Henderson – Johnson County Council
representing District 2; Johnson County
Solid Waste District. Besides serving on
the board of the Solid Waste District, Rob
serves on the Johnson County Council,
where he works with council members to
set the county budget and ensure each
county department has adequate revenue
to perform its duties.
• Bob Heuchan – Franklin Redevelopment
Commission; Indiana Masonic Home Foundation; Franklin College Alumni Council.
Bob’s dedication to serving his community
runs deep. Besides serving as president of
the redevelopment commission, he invests

Always read
the fine print
Trial offers arrive in the mail or in your
inbox every day. They might be magazine
subscriptions, software offers or fitness club
memberships. Regardless, it’s important to
read the fine print before you commit. It is
especially critical to learn what will happen
when the trial period ends. Oftentimes, you
will find that your account will be charged
if you don’t cancel the offer within a certain
period of time. There are many great deals
out there. Just be fully informed when
considering any trial offer.
The demand for event centers, banquet halls and other locations that
offer hospitality services for weddings and reunions is rapidly growing
south of Indianapolis. Earlier this year, Greenwood resident Amanda
Cottingham capitalized on that demand and broke ground at The Barn
at Bay Horse Inn in February. They opened for business on September 15.
When Cottingham knew it was time to turn her idea into a successful
business venture, she called Mutual Savings Bank and met with our team
of financial experts to bring her idea to life. Like Cottingham, Mutual
saw the demand for venues such as Bay Horse Inn and worked with her
to achieve her goal.
“We were thrilled to partner with Mutual Savings Bank and to support a
local bank here in Johnson County,” she said. “Of all of the banks we met
with, they took a genuine interest in our business. They even came out to
the property to view the space and get to know us and our business plan.
We look forward to this partnership.”

Perspectives
Robert D. Heuchan
President and CEO
Historically, Mutual Savings
Bank has deep roots in the
residential mortgage business.
Founded in 1890 as Mutual
Building and Loan Association,
this institution has provided
families over the decades with
a safe, friendly and reliable
place to finance the purchase
of a home.
In 1994, we converted from a federally chartered building
and loan to a state-chartered savings bank. A primary reason
for converting was so we could more easily offer other
services to our residential customers, such as consumer
loans, commercial loans for businesses and trust services.
Since that time, we have grown as a bank that offers all of
the traditional banking services you expect while retaining
our expertise in residential mortgage lending.
I am reminded from time to time of how important residential
lending is to our customers and community. Recently a friend
came to see me at the bank, stating that he had inquired
with one of the online mortgage lenders (whom you see so
frequently on TV) and wondered how we would compare in
terms of pricing. After comparing our pricing with that of
the online lender, there was no comparison. Our rate beat
their rate, and our fees were considerably less as well. This

friend saw the difference immediately, and by the end of the
day he was working with Mutual.
Another reminder came recently. A customer of the bank came
to me and said, “Let me give you a hug.” I replied sure, but what
was the occasion? She reminded me that Mutual had approved
their construction loan and permanent mortgage. Theirs was a
unique situation: The builder of their home included a group of
local firefighters. While many mortgage institutions would not
consider this type of arrangement, we knew the customers as
well as the local firefighters who were assisting in the construction,
so the deal was approved. “We are now getting our new home
built,” she said.
Speaking of online mortgage services, Mutual customers
can now submit mortgage applications online. Recently
introduced, we are pleased to say that we have received and
approved an impressive number of residential mortgage loan
requests.
Don’t forget the value of working with a local institution
should you ever have a question about your mortgage. We
service practically all of the residential mortgage loans we
originate, which means you aren’t having to call an out-ofthe-area 800 number to who-knows-where.
Again, Mutual is deeply rooted with a history of residential
mortgage lending. We remain committed to serving those
in our area with a competitive, friendly and efficient process
for providing financing for the construction and purchase of
homes. That is why we have financed homes for generations!

Mutual Friend: Rob Henderson
ROB IS A SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT AND OUR
COMMERCIAL LOAN OFFICER.
Rob Henderson is a Franklin man
through and through. Born and raised
here, he says, “There’s no other place
I’ve ever wanted to be.” That’s lucky
for us because since October 2015,
Rob has been a Senior Vice President
of Mutual Savings Bank and our
Commercial Loan Officer. He is our
featured employee.
Rob did move away once, to attend Indiana University in Bloomington.
He graduated in December 1993 with a B.S. from the School of
Public and Environmental Affairs. He went to work for another
bank in this market, specializing in commercial lending, and
became involved in an array of Johnson County community
organizations, such as Franklin Lodge F & AM #107, Franklin
Rotary, the Johnson County Council and Johnson County Solid
Waste Management District.
Through his involvement, he became acquainted with various
movers and shakers in the Johnson County community, including
our own Bob Heuchan. Through the years their relationship
grew, eventually leading to his employment here. “Joining Mutual
Savings Bank was never planned. Bob and I just had a great
business relationship. But when an opportunity to be Mutual’s
commercial lender unexpectedly presented itself, I knew it was
a great move to a tremendous bank. I wanted to return to a
community-focused bank with local decision-making,” he said.
Rob prizes the people-focused service at Mutual and the collegial
atmosphere among management. “We provide outstanding
customer service – at all levels – and the dedication to delivering
that is only further motivated by the people we are serving every
day. From our senior management to our board, everyone is
actively involved in operations,” he explained.
Rob is committed to Mutual and to his lovely family: wife, Brandi; son,
Jack; and daughter, Abbie. He likes to attend Sunday services at
Hopewell Presbyterian Church, take long walks with Brandi and
root for his children at their sporting events.
Life is good at the Henderson home, especially when the Colts
are winning. “I’m an avid Hoosiers, Colts and Pacers fan. So,
many weekends are spent donning my team colors and cheering
on my teams from my couch.”
