Questions
4 & 5. Anyone who has ever
studied the American
Revolution will recognize a
litany of associated names
and their accomplishments.
Undoubtedly, the list will
include such names as
Patrick Henry, Nathan Hale,
and George Washington.
There is one name,
however, that is often
overlooked: Sybil Ludington.
At the young age of 16,
Sybil earned the respect of
her entire community by
summoning a regiment to
assemble, causing the
British to retreat at a critical
time.
Sybil Ludington is
sometimes called "the
female Paul Revere" because
of her courageous night ride.
On April 26 1777, a knock
came at the door of the
Ludington family home. An
excited messenger alerted
Sybil's father, Colonel
Ludington, that the British
had been destroying military
store houses and burning
buildings throughout
Danbury. The colonel and
his troops had only recently
returned home for a brief
rest from the fighting.
Nevertheless, Colonel
Ludington knew this
furlough must be cut short
to stop the British from
advancing further.
Recognizing the importance
of the mission, Sybil
volunteered to muster 400+

men in the Colonel's
regiment. Despite the threat
of bandits, wandering British
soldiers, or other malicious
characters, Sybil rode, on
horseback, forty miles in
muddy, dark, unmarked
terrain, alarming the men
and directing them to her
father's house. Thanks to
Sybil, the mobilized militia
avenged the British
intruders and successfully
drove the British troops back
to their ships on Long Island
Sound.
