What is Design?
Design is not a thing (a shape, color, website),
but a process to finding a solution.
Design is a method of problem solving.
It’s asking why and challenging conventions.
Design can communicate many layers to a story
- within mere seconds.

Design Thinker
Observe: Take note of what’s happening in the world.
Trends, conversations, technologies. What are people
gravitating around.
Think like a human: Put yourself in other peoples shoes.
Always see through the eyes of the end user.
Understand your purpose: Ask why why why.
Put into practice: Try and test. Repeat until it works.

Design Principles*
Harmony: everything must serve a purpose while
working together.
Balance: create an equal tension such as loud
with quite, sharp with soft.
Hierarchy: not everything can be of equal
importance. Know the order.
*Plus 3 others: scale/proportion, dominance/emphasis, similarity/contrast

Design Tips
Observe: Always be looking. Pay attention to what
other people/companies are doing. What colors,
styles, trends are emerging.
Collect: If you see something that resonates, save it.
Think about why it did.
Copy Design: Practice recreating designs as a skill
building exercise. Find the same fonts, colors, spacing
- try to recreate exactly. Design harmony and balance
happens in the details.
