“The Greek model for teacher recognition and assessment and subsequent career path opportunities” Genoa eTwinning mini-conference 16-17/11/2011 Irene Pateraki, Med, kindergarten teacher Teacher assessment and recognition in Greece (1/2) • A pilot program has been introduced for the assessment of the • • • • educational work at the school units during the last two years It is voluntary and includes all the educational levels Assessment concerns: equipment, financial resources, human dynamic, organization of the school unit, school management, relationships among personnel, curriculum, teaching quality, educational programs and activities, teachers’ training, pupils social development and progress School advisors supervise the whole process and advise the school unit when necessary Main objective: the creation of a positive attitude towards assessment and the active participation of teachers Teacher assessment and recognition in Greece (2/2) • No formal teacher’s assessment in Greek schools yet • “the New School” that the Ministry of Education promotes has as main objective project work. • Workshops on how to coordinate projects at upper secondary education , eTwinning examples • eTwinning= project work, can really work on that direction Teacher Recognition: • Teachers in eTwinning projects work more and succeed more. So, it is really rewarding for them to gain recognition for their work. • Sometimes informal recognition is more important than formal recognition • In Greece, teachers who organize eTwinning projects have some opportunities to show their work and gain formal recognition National eTwinning Awards • Each year the Hellenic NSS of eTwinning announce the National • • • • Awards There are age-winner categories as well as thematic ones The ceremony takes place in the Ministry of Education Lifelong Learning and Religious Affairs Teachers award: participation in a European PDW Pupils award: ICT equipment and gadgets Excellence and Innovation in Education • The Ministry of Education Lifelong Learning and Religious Affairs has awarded, in a special ceremony, the 100 most innovative school projects in the last two years • A large percentage of projects being awarded are eTwinning projects 2 hours reduction per week • Teachers can apply for working 2 hours less every week in order to have time to organize their project work • Only obligation to inform about the progress and finish the project eTwinning Greek Newsletter and website • Every month a project that has received the National Quality Label is presented in the newsletter • The awarded projects are also presented in a Gallery in the Greek website: http://www.etwinning.gr Participation in conferences/workshops • Many teachers present their work in conferences/seminars and workshops around Greece Recognition by the school community • Colleagues can recognize teachers work in eTwinning although at times they can be misunderstood • A solution for gaining school recognition is the eTwinning school teams Recognition by pupils and parents • Most of the times the most important recognition of all • Usually parents support a teacher who is organizing such projects at school- most of the time are really helpful • Pupils become really enthusiastic working with European partners and show their appreciation to their teacher Thank you!!!
