PRINCIPAL’S PIECE
25 SEPTEMBER 2013
Dear Parents and Caregivers
I would like to thank all the students, staff and members of the community who supported our College “Big Chair Fair”.
There is a long list of people who donated items for the fair which is listed later in this newsletter. Every business I
approached was willing to support the College, unfortunately I did not make contact with every business in Methven and
that is the only reason other businesses are not listed. It is looking like we will have raised approximately $10,000 from the
fair and considering the weather on the day and the business of this time of year; this is a very good amount. I was very
impressed with the variety of stalls that the form classes set up as well as the house competition which was organised by
the New Zealand Young Farmers. I feel the two aims of the fair were met; one of raising money for new hall seating and
two of having an event which both exhibited and developed our community spirit.
This is the last week of the term. This term has had its usual successes, areas of improvement and the unusual. These were mostly
weather related; a warmer than usual winter, less sport days skiing, whole school day stuck on the mountain and the worst north west
winds since 1975. With all the different things happening there is still an expectation that
the students will continue their learning and do the best they can. What is pleasing is that
for many that is exactly what they do.
Ekea ka tiritiri o te moana…
This striving for excellence has been shown in the large number of students who have

senior speech awards, those who competed in the Aoraki Mathematics competitions and
those who achieved Opuke and Academic Awards at assembly last Monday. To obtain
these awards students need to put in their own nomination form listing their
achievements. In the Academic Awards eight students were awarded Level 1
certificates, fourteen awarded Level 2 certificates and two students awarded Level 3
certificates. An important part of this process is for the students to make their own application. If you think your child has reached the
standards required encourage them to apply.
I wish all students, staff and parents a restful break. Seniors will need to put some time into their studies for external examinations next
term. As usual I have asked the students to be helpful at home and “pay their break forward.” Thank you again for the support you give to
your children.

SOCIAL STUDIES EXTRA! QUIZ 2013 - YEAR 7/8
We have recently held our annual Social Studies Extra! Quiz at MHC. This competition culminates a year’s worth of learning from
our monthly Extra! current events newspapers by every Year 7 and 8 student. Competition day is full on and very busy with students
working in teams of three on the ten rounds of questions covering topics such as flags, NZ current events, Who am I? and What am
I?, and cartoon interpretation. Everybody has had a blast this year with one Year 8 team really standing out achieving a score of
74/100. They were Kaleb Small, Will Smith and Richard Turpie who will be representing our school two years in a row! The top Year
7 team were Harry Lemon, Ben Innes and Elliot Wareing. Unfortunately their score wasn’t enough to topple the Year 8’s!
The following teams will represent our school at the Aoraki Current Events Quiz held in Timaru on Wednesday 25th September:
 Jackson Allred, Vicki Pluck, Emma Warmerdam
 Tom Bell, Lachie Mee, Travis Howden
 Leah Berquist, Alisa Ikenaga, Edmund Fordyce
 Richard Turpie, Will Smith, Kaleb Small
 Kate Braidwood, Becky Schmack, Ashley Esler
 Chris Spittal, Tobi Dalglish, Harry Hood
We would like to especially thank the students from the two Year 10 classes that did all the marking. Well done to everybody!

YEAR 7/8 NEWS
Congratulations to Edmund Fordyce who placed 3rd in the recent
Ashburton Plains Rotary Speech competition. Edmund won the
school Year 7/8 speech competition earlier in the term and competed
with eight other students from around Mid-Canterbury. He spoke
about "Why I'm not looking forward to growing old."
Congratulations also to Victoria Pluck who was presented with an
Ashburton Plains Rotary Honour Roll award. She was nominated by
her fellow Year 7/8 students. This award is about citizenship and
community service and is aimed towards those students who are
often the unsung heroes.
SENIOR SPEECH COMPETITION RESULTS
On Thursday evening, 19 September, four promising senior students shored up their courage to present their speeches in the
library to a small but engaged audience. All spoke with passion and integrity, entertaining us with their thoughtfulness, research
and challenging conclusions. All gained Excellence for their NCEA oral presentation achievement standard. The results were:
1st Phoebe Fordyce 12RA
2nd Rhys Fitzgerald 11JO
3rd = Dakota Johansen and Danelle Ingham 11KE
Thanks to Ms Jeffrey-Jones and Mrs McDowell-Holmes for judging the event.
Gateway News for 2014
Some exciting career pathways are opening up for Gateway students in 2014. Consultation with Air New Zealand
recruitment staff at C.P.I.T. update day means we have current information about their industry training for flight,
engineering, service, ground operations and business leadership. The information shows how students can pathway
into the courses by achieving units for study and experience in the field with local employers. In 2013 I have had a
number of students wanting to do Flight Service Training. On advice from Air New Zealand they did a comprehensive
study and work experience in Hospitality, Customer Service and early childhood units. Some of the students then chose
to return to school for Year 13 and U.E. qualification; some are going to Early Childhood College; one student is applying
to Air New Zealand for their training course in Auckland and another returning to school with a view to training with QRC
college in Queenstown in Hospitality Management.
There are also new training initiatives with A.T.T.T.O. for helicopter pilot training through Canterbury Aero Club. A few
years ago we had Andrew Muckle do this course for fixed wing flying. It is fantastic. Canterbury Aero Club is one of the
5 organisations who are recognised trainers for flight crew by Air New Zealand. The units are packaged from A.T.T.T.O.
and include history of flight, instrumentation, maintenance and calculations. It is great that this course has now included
helicopter training. During this course there is some contribution from parents and Gateway funding. Parents are also
welcome to visit the facility at Christchurch airport. During the course of the year there is also a visit to the Air New
Zealand Engineering works and fit-out facility and a talk by the Chief of Pilots, and 3 free training flights.
In 2013 we had two students do the initial Beauty Skills course of study with H.I.TO. who are the Hairdressing and
Beauty Industry Training Organisation. The course was comprehensive and involved the students doing weekly training
sessions in one of our local beauty salons and a verification by an independent assessor. They learnt about skin care,
makeup, manicures, pedicures, eyelash tinting and facials. They had sessions which included some clients who were
happy to be practised on. I have a number of students who have Gateway on their subject choice sheets and I am
holding interviews for Gateway prospective students for 2014, early in Term 4. If you make an appointment with me I will
put reminders in the notices each day with your timeslot.
