DESCRIPTION OF DEPOSIT
The showings a r e confined t o massive g r e e n s t o n e s of t h e
Upper Karmutsen Formation which outcrop over a $ m i l e width,
s t r i k e N60°E and d i p 40GS. The m i n e r a l occurrence c o n s i s t s of a
b r e c c i a t e d and r e t i c d a t e d q u a r t z v e i n system, which s t r i k e s
N60°E and d i p s 65O t o 75'SE.
Five v e i n s occur w i t h i n a width of
350 f e e t . The v e i n s a r e composed mostly of q u a r t z , w i t h s p a r s e
p y r i t e and c h a l c o p y r i t e , and some f i n e f r e e gold. I n d i v i d u a l
v e i n s have been t r a c e d f o r 400 t o 1,000 f e e t and a r e 6 i n c h e s t o
5 f e e t wide. The v e i n w a l l s a r e s l i g h t l y s i l i c i f i e d and c h l o r i tized.
A 1920 sample, a c r o s s a 26 i n c h width of t h e v e i n , assayed
$10 a t o n i n gold and 0.5 ounces a t o n i n s i l v e r .
Vein C, where i n t e r s e c t e d by No. 3 a d i t , showed 30 i n c h e s of
s o l i d q u a r t z and 60 i n c h e s of small q u a r t z v e i n s and s t r i n g e r s .
Two a s s a y s , from t h e d r i f t on t h e v e i n , taken over widths of 28
and 30 i n c h e s , gave v a l u e s of 0.217 and 0.19 ounce, r e s p e c t i v e l y ,
of g o l d per ton.
Associated minerals or products of value
-
The p r o p e r t y i s l o c a t e d a t an e l e v a t i o n of about 500
feet,
of a m i l e n o r t h of t h e s o u t h arm of Kootenay I n l e t
on t h e west s i d e of Moresby I s l a n d . The showings were
d i s c o v e r e d and t h r e e claims s t a k e d by J o n e s , Biggs, and
McRae i n 1919,
I n 1921 J o n e s and Larson l e a s e d t h e p r o p e r t y f o r t h r e e
y e a r s . Work on t h e l a r g e s t v e i n c o n s i s t e d of open-cutting
and s t r i p p i n g f o r a l e n g t h of 600 t o 700 f e e t . I n 1922 a
sample of s e v e r a l hundred pounds of o r e assayed a t $23.60 a
t o n i n g o l d , of which $14 was r e c o v e r a b l e f r e e gold. By
1923 a 1 0 t o n Ross m i l l , w i t h a c a p a c i t y of one t o n p e r day,
had been i n s t a l l e d . I n 1926 t h e main v e i n was t r a c e d t o a
t o t a l l e n g t h of 7,000 f e e t .
E.C. S t e v e n s , i n 1930, r e s t a k e d t h e showings a s t h e 4
claim Rupert group. Open c u t t i n g and s t r i p p i n g l o c a t e d
a d d i t i o n a l p a r a l l e l veins.
Hai&a Gold Mines, Limited, i n c o r p o r a t e 6 i n 1933, surveyed t h e o r i g i n a l c l a i m s and w i t h a d d i t i o n a l s t a k i n g
expanded t h e p r o p e r t y t o 10 claims. Work done included
s u r f a c e s t r i p p i n g and t r e n c h i n g , c r o s s - c u t t i n g , and underground d r i f t i n g on v e i n C. D e t a i l e d sampling i n t h e 280f o o t l o n g d r i f t a d i t (NO. 1 a d i t ) showed v a l u e s v a r y i n g from
0.02 t o 1.42 ocnces of gold per t o n , w i t h an average a s s a y
v a l u e of 0.214 ounces of gold per t o n a c r o s s a width of 29
i n c h e s . I n l a t e 1933, C.C. S t a r r began a d i t No. 3 a t t h e
218-foot e l e v a t i o n , 288 f e e t below No. 1 a d i t . No. 3 a d i t
i n t e r s e c t e d v e i n C a t a d i s t a n c e of 387 f e e t from t h e p o r t a l
where t h e v e i n Tias d r i f t e d on f o r 120 f e e t . The p r o p e r t y
was c l o s e d i n October 1934 due t o l a c k of funds.
The p r o p e r t y was examined by V i d e t t e Gold Nines, Limited,
i n 1936. Work was r e p o r t e d t o have resumed d u r i n g t h e year.
