the Thirteen Colonies? There are different crops that people grow there. In the
Middle Colonies they grew grain. One of
the most popular crops in the Southern
Colonies is rice. Along the coast of the
Southern Colonies they grew indigo on
large farms. Indigo is a plant that makes
blue die. Most of the states also grow the
crop tobacco. Tobacco is still the most
popular crop today. The thirteen colonies
have lots of land. If you like farming

Have you ever gone to Connecticut, Rohde Island, Massachusetts or
New Hampshire? Those are the New
England Colonies. Connecticut was
founded by Thomas Hooker in 1636.
The capital for Connecticut is Hartford,
and the people’s jobs are faming and
lumbering. Rhode Island was founded
by Roger Williams. The capital of
Rhode Island is Providence, and people
also did farming and lumbering. Massachusetts was founded by John Winthrop.
They did farming, lumbering and shipbuilding. The capital of Massachusetts
is Boston. New Hampshire became a
separate colony in 1680. Groups of people settled there because they wanted
religious freedom. The people of the
New England Colonies have jobs that
include farming, lumbering, and shipbuilding. You will do well in the New
England.
Have you ever been to the “Bread
Basket”? The Bread Basket includes
the states of New York, Pennsylvania,
New Jersey and Delaware. They are all
known as the Middle Colonies. The
Middle Colonies are called the “Bread
Basket” because they farmed in the rich
soil and produced a lot of crops. New
York was founded by Peter Minuit in
1626. They did shipbuilding and iron
work in this colony. Also, farms were
important so they had lots of cattle,
grain, rice, and wheat. New Jersey was
founded by English colonists in 1664.
Lumbering and ironworking were industries in New Jersey. The capital of New
Jersey is Trenton. Pennsylvania was
founded by William Penn in 1687. Here
they harvest wheat . Delaware was
founded by Peter Minuit in 1638. Farming, fishing, and lumbering are important industries. The capital of Delaware
is Dover. If you like farming and working together, then you will have a thrilling time in the “Bread Basket” of the
colonies.

farming indigo, rice, and tobacco. The
capital for Virginia is Raleigh. Georgia
was founded by James Oglethorpe in
1732. This southern colony farms indigo, rice ,and sugar. The capital for
Georgia is Savannah. South Carolina
was founded by Englishmen in 1663.
Indigo, rice, tobacco, cotton, and cattle
are on the farms here. The capital for
South Carolina is Charleston. All of
