All of these sets of synonyms reflect the paired adjective opposites presented in the Synonyms 3 worksheet; they’ve just been rearranged. These words begin with the most difficult synonyms on the left. The second one is less difficult and the third one is not particularly difficult. As a pair / group work activity, the student with the worksheet reads off the first word on the left. The partner(s) tries to guess what the simple adjective is. If not, the second synonym in the set is read. If correctly matched, the student gets two points. If not, the third synonym from the set is read. If correctly matched, the student gets one point. When finished, the student with the most points wins. Encourage students to write any of the three synonyms on their copies of Synonyms 3. Variation 1: Don’t hand out the Worksheet at first. Instead, read off the list and have the students compete against each other for points. Variation 2: Demonstrate that many of these adjectives can be easily converted to adverbs by adding an -ly. Encourage students to read through all of the adjective synonyms making them into adverbs. Variation 3: If there is a Thesaurus or two around, and if students can not identify the common synonym from the three hints given, students can offer a fourth and/or fifth hint by using the Thesaurus – which, by the way, is a wonderful way for students to become familiar with this marvelous resource book. Writing Practice: Encourage students to write short descriptive sentences using these or other synonyms to enhance their writing. For example, rather than: The kind and honest man was satisfied with his achievement, students could write: The thoughtful and trustworthy man was contented with his achievement.
