Syn. 3b Cont A.ai

Teachers’ Instructions (1/2)
Synonyms 3 (Continued)
If no one can identify the correct
synonym, this lesson is probably too
difficult for the students!!. Usually the
third hint is the easiest and someone
should be able to call out the common
synonym: amateur.
Repeat this process a few more times
if necessary until students understand
how the activity works.
Getting Started: Have students pull out
their original Synonyms 3 worksheet.
Then pair or group students and give a
copy of Synonyms 3 - Continued to only
one student in each pair or group. Explain
that these words are synonyms for the
words printed in Synonyms 3 but the
order of the words has been randomized.
1. Student ability: Intermediate ~ Advanced
2. Approximate length of lesson: 40+
3. Number of students necessary: Any
4. Preferred age/maturity: HS??, College, Adult
5. Type of lesson: Pair / Group activity
*****
Language Target: Extended vocabulary
development – finding a common word
for three synonymous adjectives.
Setting Up: This lesson is best used as a
follow up of Synonyms 3 (Lesson
Collection Set #4 – Lesson 4e).
Once students have completed
Synonyms 3, go on to Synonyms 3 Continued.
To begin, target a simple adjective
such as amateur. Offer a synonym for
noisy such as novice. See if students can
identify the word amateur from that hint.
If someone says amateur, three points
are awarded. If not, offer a second
synonym such as beginner. Again, give
them some time to come up with the word
amateur. If someone says it, award two
points. If they are stumped, offer a third
synonyms such as rookie.
Now they have three synonyms. If
someone says amateur award one point.

For example, the first set: novice,
beginner and rookie are synonyms for
the word amateur. On the original list,
however, amateur was the 7th entry on
the left.
Tightfisted, parsimonious and
miserly are synonyms for the word stingy
- the 11th entry in the right column on the
original. All of these sets of synonyms
reflect the paired adjective opposites
presented in the Synonyms 3 worksheet;
they’ve just been rearranged.
These words begin with the most
difficult synonyms on the left. The second
one is less difficult and the third one is
not particularly difficult. As a pair / group
work activity, the student with the
worksheet reads off the first word on the
left.
The partner(s) tries to guess what the
simple adjective is. (Students may be
encouraged to have their copies of
Synonyms 2 in front of them to help
reinforce the vocabulary.)
If the partner(s) correctly identifies
the simple adjective from the first

synonym, three points are given. If not,
the second synonym in the set is read. If
correctly matched, the student gets two
points. If not, the third synonym from the
set is read. If correctly matched, the
student gets one point.
When finished, the student with the
most points wins. Encourage students to
write any of the three synonyms on their
copies of Synonyms 3.
Variation 1: Don’t hand out the Worksheet
at first. Instead, read off the list and have
the students compete against each other
for points.
Variation 2: Demonstrate that many of these
adjectives can be easily converted to
adverbs by adding an -ly. Encourage
students to read through all of the
adjective synonyms making them into
adverbs.
Variation 3: If there is a Thesaurus or two
around, and if students can not identify
the common synonym from the three
hints given, students can offer a fourth
and/or fifth hint by using the Thesaurus –
which, by the way, is a wonderful way for
students to become familiar with this
marvelous resource book.
Writing Practice: Encourage students to
write short descriptive sentences using
these or other synonyms to enhance their
writing. For example, rather than: The
kind and honest man was satisfied with
his achievement, students could write:
The thoughtful and trustworthy man was
contented with his achievement.
