Crocheted Necklaces Supplies: Use a K or J crochet hook One ball of ladder yarn. Note: the length of yarn in a ball varies by manufacturer. Clear pony beads (two/necklace) Instructions for getting started: Use a K or J crochet hook Use a flat ruler to make your measurements. SAVE the yarn’s label and return with finished necklaces. Return any left over yarn with your completed lengths Make as many strands out of your ball of yarn as possible. Note: Each necklace requires 6 strands. Extra left over strands will be combined for addition necklaces. Directions for crocheting a strand. Each necklace will use 6 of the finished strands. Measure 12 inches of ladder yarn, then make a loop with your crochet hook Crochet a 12” loose chain measuring along your ruler Do not stretch the yarn to measure 12”; or it’ll shrink back to less than 12” Measure 12 inches of ladder yarn beyond the crocheted area, cut off , and pull the end of the yarn back through the last crocheted loop. Assembling the necklaces: Lay the 6 strands on top of each other, aligning the ends of the crocheted sections together. Tie a knot on each side of the crocheted sections. Lay the necklace in a “U” shape matching the knots you have just made on the necklace and trim the ends of the necklace as long as possible, but even so they match. (Should be really close to 1112” on each side) Pg 1 Finishing: Two tail version Using a Butler G.U.M floss threader, or a smaller crochet hook, loop around the 6 strands on one side of the necklace and pull the ends through 2 clear plastic Pony Beads. Note: If the bead is rough on the inside, use a long thin meat skewer and went back and forth on the inside of the beads to knock off any little bit of irregular plastic inside the bead; otherwise, it can catch on the yarn and rip it. Trim those ends even and tie them together in a knot close to the end If the yarn is thin/small, tie a second note which will help hold the beads on. Repeat for the 6 strands on the other side of the necklace, pulling them through the beads from the opposite direction. Note: To avoid getting into the ladder yarn in the bead, pull the first strands of yarn down to the bottom of the plastic bead and hold there while passing the threader through. Straighten the strands. Trim ends even. Tie a knot (two knots also if the yarn is thin/small). Optional: One tail version Using a Butler G.U.M floss threader, (or small crochet hook) loop around 6 strands on one side of the necklace and pull them through “ONLY 1” clear plastic Pony Beads. Then using the threader (hook), loop around other 6 strands on the other side of the necklace and this time thread through the SAME bead going the SAME direction. Aligning the knots by the crocheted sections, straighten the twelve side strands, and make a knot about 1 inch from the end of the tail. If the yarn is thin/small, tie a second note which will help hold the beads on. This leaves a 1” tail which fans out. I trim the cluster of ends, straight across, but try to cut between & not through a square/rectangle on the ladder yarn. (The squares/rectangles will unravel if you cut through them. ) Finishing the Ends: Place Aleene’s Fabric Fusion (Permanent Dry Cleanable Fabric Adhesive) Glue on the end knots of the necklace to secure them. Hang on a slack hanger and let dry if you have a lot of necklaces. Otherwise, just hang on a regular hanger to dry. Optional: Once, the glue on the knots has dried trim the ends as close to the knots as possible. It makes the “ball” end smooth; and it doesn’t catch on the rest of the necklace when tossed into a bag. Packaging: Keep the necklaces clean by placing them in a sandwich bag and then returning them as soon as possible to chorus and put in our collection box for finished necklaces. Selling: Finished necklaces are priced at $10 or 3 for $25. Special order can be take, but it will take 1-2 weeks usually to fulfill the order. -----Customizing for taller women: Only as special orders: Taller women might appreciate the necklace being made a little longer. Start by making the tails on the strands 13” and the crocheted section a loose 13” and then follow the directions above. Pg 2
