Root Words 1. Using the word list given at the beginning of the week, students will choose three of the exercises below to complete. 2. Students should turn in the 3 entries in their Reader’s Notebook. 3. Successful completion of all three assignments is necessary to pass this assignment. 4. This is a homework/classwork grade but will also help the student prepare for the weekly grade. Create a cartoon that includes pictures and words; use at least 3 root words. Turn in: One RN entry with containing a cartoon and at least 3 highlighted root words. Write one poem for at least 3 words. Make sure your poem is grammatically correct, and gives context clues to the meaning of the word. Each line must have 7 words or more and should show that you know the meaning of the word. Draw pictures that helps you remember the meaning of each word. Do this for each of the ten words on the list. Turn in: One RN entry with 10 small drawings. Make a mini-poster that explains the root word(s). Make something that you would be proud to post in a classroom. Turn in: One RN entry. Find synonyms and antonyms for each of the words. Turn in: One RN entry of a list of the words and a synonym and antonym for each word. Write a short story using all ten words. Be creative! Highlight the words. Turn in: One-two RN entries containing a short story with ten vocabulary words highlighted. Turn in: One RN entry with 1 poem. Find a magazine or newspaper article that uses at least one of the words. Cut it out and paste on your RN entry. Highlight or circle the word in the article. Write a short (paragraph) summary of the article. Make sure that the article is school appropriate. Turn in: One RN entry with the article taped to it. Write your own test. Create a 10 question test that you would give if you were the teacher and wanted to test students’ knowledge of these words. Turn in: One RN entry with 10 questions and an answer key Create a descriptive advertisement for a real or made up product that includes at least 3 root words.
