March 17, 2017 FIFTH GRADE NEWS MRS. LAUDATO’S CLASS Highlights From Our Week Students analyze primary sources for the Boston Tea Party and events that followed. Students “rebeled” against the taxation inflicted by Queen Laudato. They gained historical empathy for the Colonists. Important Dates or Reminders This week in Science, we reviewed our Earth Science unit in preparation for their test on Friday. Students also finalized their severe weather commercials and analyzed weather data using forecasts of Sacramento and weather around the country. They noticed warm and cold fronts, humidity levels, air pressure and how these change with the temperature changes outside. Use the weather link below and ask your student to analyze these weather patterns. In Social Studies, our class participated in a Taxation Week, where each student was given stamp notes to “pay” for the new tax act each morning. The students were not happy and “rebeled” on Thursday, where we repealed three acts of taxation. This simulation allowed students to gain historical empathy in understanding the frustrations of the colonists while trying to create a new nation. The students demanded representation much like the founding fathers did, which eventually led to the Revolutionary War. Students were able to also analyze primary sources of the Boston Tea Party and participated in a virtual representation of the major battles of the Revolutionary War. In Language Arts, our class focused on their expository writing pieces and reviewed how to cite sources as a bibliography and to indicated in their text, what source they used for the information they are sharing. Our class also continued reading our novel My Brother Sam Is Dead and students were able to make connections between what they are learning about in Social Studies with the events revealed in the novel. We used Google Lit trips to survey the different places in Google Earth that are mentioned in the novel. The students were able to understand just how far it was for the Meeker family to travel to Verplanks Point for their yearly cattle run or how far they were from the battle of Lexington and Concord.
