Shannon Hardel
Interim Commandant
Wisconsin Veterans Home
at King
I often think how fortunate I am to live in Wisconsin. I enjoy the changing seasons, especially the
miraculous awakening of spring as plant life comes alive with color, migratory birds return to the
area and the last vestiges of winter fade.
Wisconsin offers unlimited recreational activities and a beautiful landscape in which to enjoy these
endeavors. In particular, I feel blessed to live and work in Waupaca County. I have worked at the
Wisconsin Veterans Home – King since 2003 and can say it is a wonderful gem in this rural community.
Situated on over 300 acres with Rainbow Lake as the backdrop and housing a post office, bowling
alley, library, café, museum (re-opening this fall), and medical services including x-ray, lab, pharmacy
and provider specialists, among other amenities, I can emphatically state, King is like no other.
As spring unfolds, the Veterans Home at King is moving into fast gear to prepare for upcoming events.
King’s largest event of the year, Open House, is scheduled for Sunday, May 21, 2017, from 10:00AM
– 2:30PM. This is a community event and we encourage all to come and enjoy this family-oriented
event and discover this beautiful gem many call “home.” Open House offers, food, entertainment,
boat rides, an old car show, tours, activities for children, and much more.
I hope to see many of you at Open House this year. In the meantime, enjoy spring’s glorious
awakening.
Yours,
Shannon L. Hardel

Season
I made it another season,
And I don’t know the exact reason.
But God has a plan for us all.
Enjoy the good times and have a ball.
There are many people that have it harder.
They are just worried about the food in the larder.
Or of keeping their job.
Looking disgustingly at the slob.
Times are rough on most.
So don’t think you are the only one grinding at the
post.
But there are good times too if you know what to do.
Don’t fret that scratch mark on your shoe.
Or of the little troubles that appear.
Think kindly of your dear.
All the little bad things will go away.
For that is the way.
Life is a collection of memories we make.
Don’t let the bad times take.
No one knows how long they have to live.
But you should always give.

“Death, Burial, and Resurrection” Part II
This month we will finish what we started last month
regarding the death, burial, and resurrection of our
Savior Jesus.
Martha’s response…John 11:27(NIV): “Yes, Lord,” she
told Him, “I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of
God who was to come into the world.”
Martha was claiming Jesus to be the One...the Messiah
who was prophesied about so many years before, and
that Jesus was the fulfillment of the One the Jewish
people were waiting for…that God Himself was now
with His people, incarnate…in the flesh...and for good
reason!
After Jesus’ emotional encounter (Jesus wept) with Mary
and the Jews who followed Mary, Jesus had a miracle to
perform…friends to serve, with the desire that all who
hear and see what Jesus was going to say and do, would
believe in Him.
So they took away the stone. Then Jesus looked up and
said, “Father, I thank you that you have heard me. I knew
that you always hear me, but I said this for the benefit of
the people standing here, that they may believe that you
sent me. When He said this, Jesus called in a loud voice,
“Lazarus, come out! (John 11: 41-43 NIV)
And Lazarus did come out of the tomb…Oh, what a
day!
Yes, many of the Jews who witnessed Lazarus’resurrection
believed and put their faith in Jesus.
This miracle also began the journey of Jesus’ fulfillment
of why He came for sinful men…to be the Lamb of God,
who takes away the sin of the world!(John 1:29 NIV).
Within days, the Pharisese and Chief Priests were meeting
together to scheme a plan to kill Jesus…to rid society of
this One who claimed,“ I am the way, the truth and the
life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If
you really knew me, you would my Father as well. From
now on, you do know Him and have seen Him” (John
14:6-7 NIV)…claiming to be God Himself.
In the eyes and ears of the religious leaders, Jesus was…
”the great blasphemer.”
I have heard it said,“ that God will use even the works of
sinful man to accomplish His purposes.”
Within weeks of Lazarus’ resurrection, Jesus was hailed
as the King of Israel and then within days, Jesus prayed
in the Garden of Gethsemane to His Father. Jesus was
then betrayed and arrested, abandoned by His Disciples,
denied by Peter, questioned, ridiculed, and unjustly tried
by the religious elite. Then being beaten without mercy,
a crown of thorns placed into his head, He was spit upon,
mocked by the soldiers, and sentenced to death by way
of the Cross.
The journey of the Cross continues...the reason that Jesus
came is becoming reality.
The carrying by Jesus and Simon the Cyrene of that
heavy Cross to Golgotha, to Jesus’ lying down…willingly
on that Cross, to the pounding of the nails in the precious
hands and feet of Jesus...to the raising of the Cross as it
is dropped in place for Jesus to be crucified and to suffer
on.

Alzheimer’s Poem
Do not ask me to remember
Do not try to make me understand.
Let me rest and know you’re with me.
Kiss my cheek and hold my hand.
I’m confused beyond your concept.
I am sad and sick and lost.
All I know is that I need you to be with
me at all cost.
Do not lose your patience with me.
Do not scold or curse my cry.
I can’t help the way I’m acting,
Can’t be different though I try.
Just remember that I need you,
That the best of me is gone.
Please don’t fail to stand beside me,
Love me till my life is done.

“Death, Burial, and Resurrection” Part 1
And suffer… “The Kings of the Jews” did.
Jesus fulfilled, the words spoken, by the Prophet Isaiah,“
But He was pierced for our transgressions, He was
crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought
us peace was upon him, and by His wounds we are
healed” (Isaiah 53:5 NIV).
It was now about the sixth hour, and darkness came
over the whole land until the ninth hour, for the Sun
stopped shining. And the curtain of the Temple was
torn in two. Jesus called out with a loud voice, “Father
into your hands, I commit my spirit.” When He had said
this, He breathed His last. (Luke 24:44-46 NIV)
It is now finished….the Lamb of God who takes away
the sin of the world has been slain.
Praise God that “His Story” does not end here….Luke
24:1-8(NIV)….On the first day of the week, very early in
the morning, the women took spices they had prepared
and went to the tomb. They found the stone rolled
away from the tomb, but when they entered, they did

not find the body of the Lord Jesus. While they were
wondering about this, suddenly two men in clothes
that gleamed like lightning stood beside them. In their
fright the women bowed down with their faces to the
ground, but the men said to them, “Why do you look
for the living among the dead? He is not here; He has
risen! Remember how he told you, while He was with
you in Galilee: The Son of Man must be delivered into
the hands of sinful man, be crucified and on the third
day be raised again.”
Then they remembered His words……For God so loved
the world (you) that he gave His one and only Son,
that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have
eternal life. For God did not send His Son into the world
to condemn the world, but to save the world through
Him. (John 3:16-17 NIV)
Lord bless you with the experiential knowledge of His
love for you, as you personally reflect on the Death,
Burial, and Resurrection of our Lord and Savior, Jesus
Christ.

Library News
The Library has added several books to its permanent collection.
Following are some of those books.
The Broker by John Grisham
Will his demise be at the hands of the Israelis, the Russians, the
Chinese, or the Saudis? After receiving enormous pressure from the CIA, the
outgoing President agrees to pardon Joel Backman. Backman, a notorious
Washington power broker, has spent the last 6 years hidden away in a
federal prison. The CIA believes that he may have obtained secrets that
compromise the world’s most sophisticated satellite surveillance system.
So Backman is given a new name and identity, quietly smuggled out
of the country in a military cargo plane, and resettled in Italy. Then the CIA
leaks his whereabouts to all of the aforementioned countries! Who will get
to Backman first??
Wicked Prey by John Sandford
The Republicans are coming to St. Paul for their convention, and the
police are anticipating more than a little trouble. There is a young man
with a 50 caliber sniper rifle roaming through a city filled with some of the
most powerful politicians on earth. There is a petty thief nursing a grudge
against the police for putting him in a wheelchair; his grudge has boiled
into full psychotic steam! Then there are your average professional stick-up
men that prey on politicians in hopes of lucrative opportunities.
John Sandford – “one of the most consistently entertaining crime
writers working today.”
The Hobbit by J. R. R. Tolkien
This story was authored 80 years ago, and is still a popular “read.”
This is the story of Bilbo Baggins, a member of a race of little people
called hobbits. Bilbo’s peaceful life is disrupted when Gandalf the wizard
scratches a sign in his door. Soon the hobbit is besieged by 13 ravenous
dwarves! The next thing he knows, Bilbo is off on a mission to reclaim a
stolen treasure from the dragon Smaug. This quest leads him to a creature
named Gollum and a very magical ring…
The Chance by Karen Kingsbury
Teenage Ellie and her best friend Nolan wrote letters to each other,
buried them in a metal box under an old oak tree, and vowed to return
eleven years later to again read the letters. Then they went their separate
ways. Ellie moved from Georgia to California, and life has taken a bit of a
toll on her. As the eleven-year span draws to a close, she finds herself with
no faith, and spending much of her day caring for her little girl, trying to
make ends meet.
She sometimes catches a glimpse of Nolan on TV; he has become an
NBA star! Nolan is well-known for his deep faith, but few know his own
personal tragedies have fueled that faith and his athletic drive. “For both
20
Ellie and Nolan, the coming date is more than just a childhood promise. It’s
the chance to make sense of it all – the chance to find out if it’s ever too
late to find love again.”
Plain Truth by Jodi Picoult
Ellie Hathaway is a Philadelphia defense attorney, enjoying a highprofile career and now offered the chance to make partner! But being
single at age 39, and unsatisfied with her relationship, Ellie decides to
“chuck it all” and takes off for a stay at her great aunt’s home in the small
town of Paradise.
Paradise is home to a large Amish community. Recently, a dead
infant was found in the barn of one of the Amish farmers. The infant did
not die of natural causes, and the investigation has led to the 18-yearold unmarried mother, Katie Fisher. Ellie decides to defend the young girl,
but finds herself in a clash of wills with a client who does not want to be
defended! Ellie soon begins to understand the difficulties of the lives of
those who choose to live “Plain.”
Motherland by Maria Hummel
This one will be hard to put down. Follow the life of one German
family during World War II. Frank Kappus, a reconstructive surgeon, lost
his beloved wife in childbirth. A few months later, he marries a young
woman who must look after the baby and Frank’s 2 grieving sons. Frank
has to leave because he has been drafted into medical military service.
The young woman, Liesl, tries to keep the children fed (dwindling food
supplies), safe from the constant Allied air attacks, and protected against
the flood of desperate refugees coming to town.
This novel was inspired by stories from the author’s father and his
German childhood, and letters between her grandparents that were
hidden in an attic wall for fifty years.
The Child Garden by Catriona McPherson
Eden was “an alternative school for happy children.” But the school
closed after one of its students committed suicide. Now it is a care home
and sits sadly with grounds neglected and overgrown. Gloria Harkness has
a son living in the home, and she lives next door so she can visit him often.
Gloria welcomes a childhood friend who shows up at her door one
day. The man has a strange story about being stalked by a girl from Eden.
The girl wants to meet him at the site of the suicide! “Only then, the dead
begin to speak – it was murder, they say.”
