Australian University Games Daily Sports Report Monday 26 August 2011 This year's AUG kicked off with comfortable weather that allowed for optimal performance. Macquarie University's teams impressed, as the majority dominated in their games on the very first day of the event. The men's water polo team deserves a special mentioning after winning their first game at 6.30am, the morning after the opening ceremony was held at Dreamworld. Some teams did better than others, but overall Macquarie had a cracker of a Monday up on the Gold Coast! Tuesday 27 August 2011 During the second day of competition at the Australian University Games is there were some excellent results achieved! We are happy to announce that Macquarie University got its first two medals in the AUG on Tuesday, namely through swimmers Atte Liimatainen's silver in 50 meter Backstroke and Donald Cameron's silver in 200 meter Freestyle. It is an excellent start to what will hopefully be a long list of great performances during the rest of the week. The development squad in Swimming that was sent up to the Gold Coast to learn through experience and also performed very well on Tuesday, with two of the competitors being the fastest qualifiers in the heats. However, due to the rules, they cannot take any final spots since they are not yet university students. In the athletics events Matt Mooney and Alex Pettigrew advanced to the finals in men's 400 meter, with the finals set to take place the following day. The men's Badminton team won their second game of the day against Wollongong, and while the opponents played a terrible game, Macquarie University played very well. Most importantly, the team loves the sport enough to always smile and spread good vibes. That is what sport is all about! Overall, the experience at the AUG has been a good one so far, and Macquarie is looking forward to achieving more outstanding results within the next couple of days. Wednesday 28 September 2011 The third day of the Australian University Games was a successful day for many Macquarie University competitors, and we are happy to announce that we won four medals! Athlete Matt Mooney won Bronze in the men's 400 meter final, swimmer Atte Liimatainen backed up his silver medal from Tuesday with a gold in the 100 meter Backstroke, swimmer Rachael Horler won gold in the 50 meter Freestyle AWAD, and a third swimming gold went to the 4x100 meter medley relay team. Macquarie University's medal count is now six after only three days of competition, certainly something that we are very proud of! Last night Macquarie University gathered at the Titanium Bar across the street from the hotel we are staying at, that is Chevron Renaissance, for a well-organised team dinner. The turnout was what the staff had hoped for, with all teams turning up and enjoying some well-deserved R&R with their fellow teammates. Thursday 29 September 2011 The fourth day of the Australian University Games was a grey and rainy one, but that didn't stop our competitors from performing at the highest possible level. The swim team was outstanding, bringing home a total of seven medals in the pool, which means that Macquarie University now has a total of 13 medals, and this is before the final day has even begun. Talk about a great week! Atte Liimatainen has been phenomenal, and yesterday he won his third gold for the games in 200 metre Backstroke. Rachael Horler is another star in the swimming squad, as she won her second gold medal for the games yesterday in 100 Freestyle AWAD. Donald Cameron won two bronze medals, in 200 metre Backstroke and 100 metre Freestyle, and Chris Warren won a bronze in 50 metre Breaststroke. We also had two teams winning bronze in the men's 4x50 metre Freestyle relay and men's 4x50 metre Medley relay. Congratulations to the swim team for winning a total of 12 medals at the 2011 AUG. Now we're looking forward to a final day of great sport, where we have several teams playing for medals. The women's Hockey team is undefeated so far in the competition, and is playing for gold. The women's Basketball team is playing for Gold and the Cyclists are scheduled to take on the road race for in the final day of competition. Friday 30 September 2011 On the final day of competition the AUG Women’s Hockey team won gold in convincing fashion promoting them to division one next year. The women’s Basketball team won a well-deserved silver medal after playing consistently throughout the week, also qualifying for division one in 2012. The men’s Badminton team won bronze, as did the men’s Water Polo team, and Michael Magee in Tae Kwon Do.
