“Heart and Soul” Discernment Covenant
Believing that

each person has something important and valuable to contribute to our conversation, and

we learn by listening, sharing, and reflecting with open minds and open hearts,
we promise that, during our time together, we will to our best

be fully present and engaged;

listen attentively, carefully, and respectfully;

avoid interrupting and engaging in cross-talk or side conversations;

remember that our purpose is shared discernment, not problem-solving;

be open to new insights about ourselves and aware of resistance within ourselves;

value our differences and the diversity of opinion among us;

focus on gaining a greater understanding of others’ perspectives and experiences;

assume good intent on the part of others and not judge them by what they say;

share openly, honestly, and deeply from our own hearts and experiences;

use “I” statements and not speak for others;

speak up (say “ouch”) if we feel hurt by something that is said or done;

be mindful of how others are feeling;

be responsible for the consequences and impact of what we say or do;

not take more than our fair share of the available time; and

respect the structure and schedule of the process.
