ment for Perry is hired, the
Motor Vehicle Division will be
run by Padilla and Deputy
Secretary John Monforte.
SANTA FE (AP) — The head
of
New Mexico’s Motor
Vehicle Division has quit.
The Santa Fe New Mexican
says Keith Perry abruptly
resigned last week.
That was after Taxation and
Revenue Secretary Demesia
Padilla “raised some concerns” about the general management of the division.
Padilla says Perry wasn’t as
aggressive as he would have
liked for him to have been in
the job.
Spokesman S.U. Mahesh says
Perry’s resignation after eight
months had “absolutely nothing to do” with the recent controversial effort by the agency
to verify the residency of foreign nationals who have New
Mexico driver’s licenses.

NRC reactivates
license for uranium
mining firm
ALBUQUERQUE (AP) —
Hydro Resources Inc. is one
step closer to beginning its
uranium mining operations in
western New Mexico.
The company says the
Nuclear
Regulatory
Commission has reactivated
its license for in-situ leach
mining on 10 claims near
Churchrock, N.M. The process
involves injecting chemicals
into the ground to release uranium.
Environmentalists and some
residents of the neighboring
Navajo reservation have been
critical of the proposal.
A spokesman for Hydro
Resource’s parent firm, Texasbased Uranium Resources Inc.,
says the license is an important step but the company still
needs approval from the state
Environment Department.
The company is also conducting a feasibility study. The fate
of the project will ultimately
depend on the market for the
natural resource.
