After-School Program Music Director Job Announcement
The Music Director is responsible for leading the Progressions music education team to deliver high quality
programming to youth across five sites in the Franklin-McKinley School District. This person will play a key
role in setting a vision for musical excellence by guiding instructors to maintain creativity and high levels of
student engagement in their daily teaching practice. The Director is responsible for overseeing 1)
program/curriculum development, 2) instructional delivery, 3) performance planning, and 4) equipment
management. The person in this role may also represent Progressions among key SJZ stakeholders, to the
broader music education community and within the South Bay live music scene.
Program/Curriculum Development





Lay out a future-oriented musical continuum for the program that motivates students to
participate for multiple years (elementary, middle, high school)
Identify specific intended learning outcomes which are challenging, meaningful and measurable
Work with Program Director to periodically modify programming to respond to site-specific needs
and improve program-wide musical coherence
Ensure curriculum adheres to Visual and Performing Arts Content Standards California Public
Schools for Music
Work with Lead Music Instructors to modify and enhance existing Progressions curriculum as
appropriate
Classroom Instruction










Supervise Lead Music Instructors at Santee, Meadows, Kennedy (and possibly Stonegate)
(Possibly) supervise Teaching Assistants at Santee, Meadows, Kennedy
Visit Lead Music Instructor classrooms regularly to ensure instructional delivery is consistent across
all sites
Visit Teaching Assistant classrooms regularly (at least once per month) to ensure instructional
delivery is consistent across all sites
Share best practices in teaching music with members of the music team
Encourage the development of instructional strategies that teach students to self-direct their
learning as evidenced through regular home practice
Conduct biweekly check-ins with all members of the music team
Offer professional development support and resources to teaching team
Prioritize the development of strategies to meet the needs of highest risk students through regular
student-focused check-ins with music instruction team
Lead year-end student assessment process
Performance Planning and Production
 Work with Program Director to set a performance calendar for the year







Set a clear artistic vision for the year and each performance
Coordinate musical content for all Saturday Nucleos with a focus on keeping programming
fresh, creative and relevant to improve attendance and participation
Work with lead instructors to codify the practice of early, collaborative performance
planning
Ensure students have repertoire that is challenging yet accessible and fun
Arrange music (or work with instructors to arrange music) as necessary
Facilitate multi-level, multi-site performance collaborations as appropriate
Lead music team in execution of high quality musical productions
Equipment Management
 Work with Instrument Coordinator to ensure inventory is up to date and 100% accounted
for at all times
 Oversee purchase and distribution of books and supplies
 Work with intermediate and advanced conductors to acquire and maintain a range of
instruments in inventory to continue developing the musical sound of all ensembles
 Work with Program Director to secure additional instruments through instrument donation
drives as needed
Qualifications
 A bachelor’s degree in music performance or education (or the equivalent)
 5-7 years of experience teaching music in a classroom setting
 Commitment to working with at-risk youth
 Experience managing complex teams for effective collaboration
Work Schedule
10-15 hours per week; Music Director must be available to visit program sites Monday-Thursday 26 pm on a regular basis
Compensation
Pay is competitive and commensurate with experience.
