Ka Boooom… Jeez that was loud, what was that?
It’s a quiet Sunday morning as I sit down to eat breakfast after sleeping in for once. I have a couple hours
before I have to start cooking for my grandmother’s 80th surprise birthday party, with over 40 people
coming over to feast. All of a sudden, Ka Boooom, my wife and I look at each other like ‘what was that?’
I look up at the dining room light and notice it just went out. “Great”, I shout, the power went out.
After a peaceful morning, the smell of freshly brewed Sunday morning coffee, and 3 beautiful kids
saying good morning daddy, I now rush through my breakfast so I can walk down the street to see what
happened.
As I open our homes front door, the day is gorgeous outside. It is sunny and bright. I take a deep breath
and smell the amazing aroma of fresh autumn air. I yell up to my wife and kids, “come on, let’s take a
walk and see what that noise was.”
My wife puts the kids in the double stroller, my son jumps on his bicycle, and off we go. I notice a few of
our neighbors outside discussing the situation. I catch part of the conversation, “tree limb”. My mind
starts racing as I think, ‘uh oh’.
“What happened,” I shout to my neighbor. He says, “you know that large oak tree those guys have been
cutting down for the past 3 days”. I say, “yup, what about it?” My neighbor proceeds to say, “Well, they
dropped a large limb on the power line.”
Frustrated, I start walking faster down the street to see it for myself. Quickly, I arrive at the scene. Sure
enough, there are no tree men at the job site. Ropes are still hanging from the tree, a large limb is lying
across the way, a high tension power line is dangerously lying on the street from where the limb
knocked it down, the road is blocked off, and police and the power company are on the scene.
I think to myself, “Un-believable, a few weeks back just down the street a 17 year old kid died from
improperly working on a tree to close to power lines, and now this.” Whoever the man was cutting this
tree is very lucky to be alive as the limb was also to close to the lines.
I shake my head, and take my family back home. “Did the homeowner not know that there is a
professional, licensed and fully insured tree company owner who lives just a few houses down? Not
even a call for a free estimate, especially when our professional tree service company had just recently
done work for other neighbors on the same street?”
Wow, I think to myself. Probably another Joe Smoe fly by night, un-licensed, un-insured tree man trying
to make a buck doing improper tree service. No City tree removal Permit was pulled by the resident.
When will homeowners start to realize that tree work is a serious and dangerous service that should be
left to the professionals? Hopefully stories such as these will help acknowledge and inform residents
that trees need to be handled only by licensed and fully insured reputable tree care companies.
By the way, as I write this article 3 days after the occurrence, the entire tree still lays cut up on the side
of the road. Those boys and the homeowner think the City will come pick it up? Think again fellas, you
better come get your mess. And home owner – I hope hauling everything was included in the price.
