Mayor Gary Christenson, City Councillor James Nestor, Malden Veterans’
Services Department and the Vietnam Combat Veterans, Ltd. announce that the
Vietnam Veterans Memorial known as “The Moving Wall” will be on display in
Malden June 7-9, 2013
The Vietnam Combat Veterans, Ltd. is bringing their Moving Wall to Malden which will be
proudly displayed at the Forest Dale Cemetery from Friday June 7 through Sunday June 9, 2013.
“The Moving Wall, Vietnam Veterans Memorial,” is a half-scale replica of the Vietnam Veterans
Memorial which is on display in Washington, D.C. The Memorial contains the names of more
than 58,000 men and women including 1,546 from Massachusetts who died or are listed as
missing in action during the Vietnam War. Malden lost 18 servicemen in Vietnam.
The Moving Wall will only be in two Massachusetts communities in 2013. Before visiting
Malden, it will be on display in Medway, MA. This will be a once in a lifetime chance for many
people to see this tremendous tribute to those men and women who lost their lives during the
Vietnam War.
In 2012, President Obama signed a proclamation recognizing and honoring all veterans of the
Vietnam War with the start of the 50th Anniversary of that war. By sponsoring The Moving Wall,
Malden not only honors its fallen warriors who died in Vietnam, but honors all of our veterans
who served with honor and distinction during more than a decade of combat, over air, land and
sea. More than 3 million Americans served in uniform and left their families to serve bravely, a
world away from everything they knew and loved, fighting heroically to protect the ideals that
we hold dear as Americans.
In 2010, Malden City Councilor James Nestor asked the Veterans’ Services Department to
submit an application to The Moving Wall. After more than two years on the waiting list, the
City of Malden and its neighboring communities will be able to once again honor our fallen
heroes from the Vietnam War. Thanks to Councilor Nestor’s initiative and foresight, the
residents of Malden, veterans and the friends and family members of our Vietnam heroes will
be able to honor their sacrifice and service to our country. State Representatives Christopher
Fallon, Paul Donato and Paul Brodeur have also helped secure state funding to assist in bringing
the display to our community.
Veterans’ Services invites any friends or relatives of the brave men and women from Malden
who paid the ultimate sacrifice in Vietnam, to share any photos and stories so that the entire
city can reflect on their service to our community and country. Please contact Kevin Jarvis,
Director of Veterans’ Services, at 781-397-7139 or [email protected].
Additionally, the City of Malden Veterans’ Services Department is seeking donations, volunteers
and support from businesses and the public, to help defray the cost of the event. Checks can be
made payable to the City of Malden Veterans’ Services Department and mailed to Veterans’
Services, 200 Pleasant Street, Room 527, Malden, MA 02148.
