Ko Rāpare tuatahi o Mahuru: Thursday 1 September 2016 http://www.levinnorth.school.nz https://www.facebook.com/levin.northschool More About Maths This week I had three people from Room 13 share their maths with me. They were working on sharing their strategies for solving division/multiplication word problems. They had to demonstrate how they worked out the challenge and write the number sentence. Manit’s challenge was that there were four octopi in a tank with a total of 32 legs. How many legs did each octopus have? He found pictures of octopi on the net and showed this in a visual representation. The number story of course was 32 ÷ 4 = 8. Dontay’s challenge was to find out how many legs were in the sheep pen if there were four sheep. He drew each sheep and counted the legs. Once again he used a visual strategy to work out his number sentence; 4 x 4= 16. Kiara also had a similar challenge. The students were developing their understanding of maths in a reasonably real context and they are at the early stages, however this is the basis of a strong foundational Some o f o ur h ip h oppers understanding of maths. Well done kids (and the teacher for taking this share their moves. Thanks approach). to Areana and Chloe, two Answer to last weeks challenge… of our parents who donate If you tried the paperfolding problem, you will have found that you can’t fold a their time and expertise strip of paper ten times – it is impossible to do so. If you could have folded it, it every Friday for our kids! wouldn’t have been a problem, you would simply have folded it and then counted the number of creases. Problem solving is also when there is NO obvious solution – this is when the really challenging thinking starts! Quiz Night What an amazing evening organised by the wonderful Fundfinders and supported by our community. Although I couldn’t attend, I heard great reports of team spirit, laughter and friendly competition. We were quite overwhelmed by the support from our local business community and it would be good if our school community reciprocated! The event raised over $1,300 which will go towards the cost of the senior camp in November. A HUGE vote of thanks to all of the organisers. Reminder Thursday 8 September is a PAID UNION MEETING day. Could you please let our office staff know by Monday 3.00 pm if you are unable to organise care for your child/ren and need them to stay here at school. SKIDs are offering a half-‐day session at our school if this helps, otherwise some members of our staff will stay at school. If you are taking your child/ren home, they must be picked up at 12.30 pm from their classroom. Thank you. Counsellor and Social Worker We are lucky enough to have been offered the services of a trained counsellor (Adi) as well as our social worker (Tama) in our school. If you and your family would like help from either of these people, they would love to hear from you. Please see (or phone) Gaywyn Shippam (Acting Deputy Principal) or your child’s teacher to arrange a time to chat. The Wonderful World of Someone Who is ‘Blind’. Our guests Olivia and Hershey Olivia Godfrey and her dog Hershey from the Blind Foundation visited the senior school last week to talk about what it means to be blind. Olivia brought her guide dog and talked about the role a guide dog plays in the life of someone who is blind. Every-‐one found this really interesting and asked some wonderful questions. We learnt that blind people can do almost anything, but maybe not be a taxi driver (from one child…). Olivia is a Lawyer and went to University to study. She used a braille ipad and wrote children's names on it. Hershey loved getting lots of cuddles and was very friendly. It was an amazing experience for our children. Grocery Voucher Winner The winner of the grocery voucher for the feedback on our new improved mid-‐year written report was the Windley family! Please see Erin at the school office to claim your prize. Thanks once again to everyone that took the time to complete the feedback form and give us things to work on. Reading Together Success Many of our families have participated in the Reading Together Programme at our school. This programme helps parents and whanau to understand the process of learning to read. We have been doing some research about the progress of these children and not only does it make the whole process (at home) much happier BUT some of our students (whose families have done the programme) have made TWO YEARS PROGRESS IN READING IN TWO TERMS. Now this is phenominal! If you would like your child to have the same opportunity, please give Gaywyn Shippam a call! Junior Show Tickets are now on sale in the office for the Junior Show – “Individuality” – at $2.00 each. The shows are on Wednesday 14 September at 6.00 am and Thursday 15 September at 11.00 am and 6.00 pm in the school hall. Get your tickets early because last year we sold out! Scholastic Book Club Everyone should have received a brochure and order form last week for Book Club. Please note the closing date is Tuesday 13 September for orders. Thank you. A HUGE thanks to Levin A.F.C for the donation of our new soccer goal nets. After watching the kids constantly chasing the balls kicked through the goal, I know these nets will be greatly appreciated. They will allow for more game time and they will promote more accurate kicking. Thanks again Levin A.F.C! TACKLE RUGBY With the season in its third week, the team has been practising hard, learning how to play to each others strengths, and how to support each others weaknesses. Yesterday some of the team played an 'away' game against Koputaroa School. The setting was perfect with the sun shining and a good ground. With some great skills being shown by both teams, and some sensational displays of individual performances, Levin North won 35 -‐ 20. The team and supporters were thrilled! After the game, the children stayed and ate together then returned victorious to school. A particular ‘well done’ to our two players of the day (names to be announced at Whole School Assembly on Friday), and to Danny and Faye for support and transport. Our next game is next week against Levin East Maroon at 'home'. TWILIGHT SOCCER and TEEBALL/SOFTBALL Continue to bring these slips back if you are wanting to play. If you need a new slip, come and collect one from me in Room 14. And finally... SPORTS UNIFORMS 1. If your child has finished using their sports uniform, please return it to school, washed and clean. We do not have washing facilities at school. 2. When your child uses a school sports uniform, please send them in with a change of clothes. Sports uniforms need to be taken off after the activity. COACHES/MANAGERS/DANCE TEACHERS/STAFF A continued thank you to Danny, the staff and whānau, who help to support our development of sport in school.
