YEAR 5 SUMMER 1 We hope you had a wonderful Easter break and are now looking forward to the Summer Term. English History Children will be looking at persuasive writing focusing on posters and letter writing. Children will also be completing work around the story ‘Great Expectations’ and will complete a range of writing outcomes related to the story. In History Children will learn about the Ancient Egyptians; who they were, what life was like back then, mummies, Tutankhamun and Egyptian Gods. We will also be encouraging the children to create artefacts at home for our very own Egyptian Museum. Science Maths Our Science topic for the term is Earth and Space. This will include learning about the planets, night and day and the movement of the Earth and Moon. In Maths we will be continuing to build upon the children’s skills in multiplication and division. Later on in the term, we will be focusing on fractions and decimals. Please support your child with regular practise of their tables and mental maths skills. Art/DT In Art lessons, children will use clay to create artefacts related to the Ancient Egyptian topic. Music Within music lessons pupils will begin to compose songs for the Year 5 and 6 production. Computing RE In RE children will explore forgiveness learning about stories from the Bible and how these relate to life today. In ICT children will use the program Audacity to create jingles and begin to plan and produce podcasts. They will also be given the opportunity to create a radio advertisement which links to our English topic. PE Reminders Please ensure your child has the correct PE kit in school as we will be having both indoor and outdoor sessions this term. Please ensure your child’s kit is in school Monday through to Friday. Pupils are expected to remove their own studs for PE lessons. If your child is unable to do this, please ensure that earrings and all jewellery is removed before coming to school. It is important that all pupils take part in PE lessons. Both children and parents will be promptly informed of sporting events and competitions in the Summer term. We encourage children to bring a healthy snack of fruit, vegetables or yoghurt to school. Foreign Languages Children will continue to learn French in Modern Foreign Languages. Homework Homework will be given out on a Friday and should be returned on a Tuesday. Please remind children to complete their homework. Regular home reading is essential to assist your child to progress, therefore reading comprehension tasks, differentiated to your child’s needs will be sent home on a fortnightly basis. This will be set as part of the weekly English homework. Unless accompanied by an adult, children should not arrive at school before 8:45am, as teacher supervision in the KS2 playground does not begin until this time.
